Book excerpt: The perfect steno book for the court reporting student, professional, or teacher. Contains extensive lists of drills covering all aspects of machine stenography. From basic Finger Drills suitable for the first day of Theory Class to two-handed finger-twisting drills that professional stenographers will find extremely challenging, this book will give you the machine shorthand workout that you need. It is 143 pages of steno drill after steno drill, all designed to get you stroking strong, clear, and confident. Each chapter focuses on a specific part of the steno keyboard. The easiest drills are in the first part of the book. The drills become progressively harder as you work your way through the chapters. The final nine chapters contain drills for both hands at once. There are three basic types of Finger Drills used in this book. Familiarity Drills are large tables with one key, letter, or combination in each cell of the table. Each cell is one stroke. There is one Familiarity Drill in each chapter, except for the Dexterity Drill chapters. Each drill takes up an entire page.Rhythm and Speed Drills are three- or four-stroke drills that you repeat over and over. Each chapter, except for the Dexterity Drills, contains over 20 Rhythm and Speed Drills. They look like this: S H K PEach letter is a separate stroke. S is the first stroke. H is the second. K is the third. P is the fourth. Work on one drill at a time until you achieve an acceptable level of rhythm and clarity. The third type of drill are the Dexterity Drills. Each Dexterity Drill chapter has over 20 separate drills. They look like this: FBGT RPLSDexterity Drills are two-stroke drills. In this example, the first stroke requires the first and fourth fingers to stretch up for the F and the T while the two middle fingers reach down for the B and the G. The second stroke is the exact opposite. Not all Dexterity Drills are exact opposites, but they are designed to be "finger twisters." All Dexterity Drills are designed to improve muscle coordination.Chapter List: How to Use this BookTips and TricksSINGLE KEY DRILLSTop Left BankBottom Left BankTop Right BankBottom Right BankVowelsLeft NumbersLeft Numbers with 0 and 5Top Left Bank with NumbersBottom Left Bank with NumbersTop Right Bank with NumbersBottom Right Bank with NumbersLeft SideLeft Side with AsteriskLeft Side with VowelsLeft Side with Numbers and VowelsLeft Side with Numbers and AsteriskLeft Side with Numbers, Vowels, and AsteriskLeft Side Numbers, Vowels, and Asterisk OnlyAll NumbersRight Side without D and ZRight Side with D and ZRight Side with NumbersRight Side with AsteriskRight Side with VowelsRight Side with Numbers and VowelsRight Side with Numbers, Vowels, and AsteriskRight Side Numbers, Vowels, and Asterisk OnlyThe Entire KeyboardCOMPOUND KEY DRILLSLeft Side Alphabet with All VowelsVowelsLeft Numbers EasyLeft Numbers HardLeft Numbers with 5 and 0 EasyLeft Numbers with 5 and 0 HardRight Numbers EasyRight Numbers HardTop Left BankBottom Left BankLeft SideLeft Side with NumbersLeft Side with VowelsLeft Side with AsteriskLeft Side with Vowels and AsteriskTop Right BankBottom Right BankRight SideRight Side with NumbersRight Side with D and ZRight Side with VowelsRight Side with AsteriskRight Side with Asterisk and D and ZRight Side with Vowels and AsteriskRight Side with Vowels, Asterisk and D and ZDEXTERITY DRILLSLeft Side EasyLeft Side MediumLeft Side HardRight Side EasyRight Side MediumRight Side HardBoth Hands EasyBoth Hands MediumBoth Hands Hard

Book The Essential 99 Punctuation Rules for Court Reporters

Download or read book The Essential 99 Punctuation Rules for Court Reporters written by Kenneth Wick and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Inexpensive Solution: Unfortunately, many court reporting students cannot afford Morson's English Guide (LMEG), Bad Grammar / Good Punctuation (BGGP), or The Gregg Reference Manual (GRM). The 99 Punctuation Rules is meant as an inexpensive solution until the court reporting student can purchase one or more of these references. 80/20 Principle: The 80/20 principle states that about 80 percent of the results come from 20 percent of the causes. Therefore, roughly 80 percent of punctuation usage comes from 20 percent of the punctuation rules. The 99 Punctuation Rules focuses on the 20 percent or the most commonly used punctuation rules. Grammar: There is an initial focus on understanding grammar. You don't need to be a grammarian, but you can't punctuate well without knowing the basics of grammar and sentence structure. References: The rules in the 99 Punctuation Rules are not my rules. They are the rules in the most current edition of LMEG, BGGP, and GRM. Other references were consulted when the LMEG, BGGP, and/or GRM did not agree. Unlike the "Student Edition" of this book, the differences in the references are cited, discussed, and compared with additional references like The Chicago Manual of Style. Therefore, this work is subtitled "Reference Edition."
