Book excerpt: The Silviculture Treatments for Ecosystem Management in the Sayward (STEMS) project is a large-scale, multidisciplinary experiment that compares forest productivity, economics, & public perception of seven treatments replicated at three sites in the Sayward Landscape Unit in the Campbell River Forest District on Vancouver Island. This report describes the establishment of the first replication of STEMS in the Snowden Demonstration Forest located in the southern portion of the Unit. The treatments investigated include five different silvicultural systems (clear-cut, patch cut, group selection, aggregate retention, & uniform dispersed retention) which are compared against two extended rotation options with & without commercial thinning. The first replication was harvested in 2001 and results related to each treatment are presented. The results will be used to improve forest management & policies and will be especially relevant for forests with multiple use objectives.

The STEMS experiment uses silvicultural systems and treatments to create diversity in forest structure that results in a variety of canopy layers (vertical structure) and spatial patchiness (horizontal structure) to enhance biodiversity and wildlife. This Technical Report describes the establishment of the second replication of STEMS starting in 2003 near Elk Bay in the Sayward Forest. Treatment units were harvested in 2005. STEMS 2 stand conditions differ from STEMS 1 with higher densities and proportions of western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) and moister biogeoclimatic site series.--Document.

These attacks threaten Sitka spruce plantings by the forest industry in B.C. In eastern Canada it limits the planting of eastern white pine and spruce. The goals of the White Pine Weevil Workshop were to consolidate current scientific knowledge and to map out a strategy for future research and funding requirements. 33 papers were presented on weevil research and management including biology and damage; genetics, weevils and hosts; and silviculture and control.
