Book Stem quality Changes on Young Mixed Upland Hardwoods After Crop tree Release

Download or read book Stem quality Changes on Young Mixed Upland Hardwoods After Crop tree Release written by David L. Sonderman and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Relative change of several types of stem defects was studied over an 8-year period to determine the effects of crop-tree thinning on the development of tree quality. Special interest was given to changes in relative quality associated with defect indicators of crop trees compared to trees in unthinned plots. The relative quality classes of the crop trees went from "poor" to "medium" for red maple and "poor" to "good" for aspen. The oaks stayed in the poor classification and yellow-poplar remained unchanged in the medium classification. Results showed a decrease in the number of epicormic branches on the crop trees, and an increase in the size of live limbs.S3.

Book Changes in Hardwood Growing stock Tree Grades

Download or read book Changes in Hardwood Growing stock Tree Grades written by David L. Sonderman and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Describes changes in provisional tree grades for 351 young, mixed upland hardwood trees 6 years after thinning. Treatments of 30, 50, and 70 percent stocking plus a crop-tree release were applied. Results indicate that light thinning and crop-tree thinning produced higher quality and better grade trees than heavy thinning.S3.

Book Stand Density a Factor Affecting Stem Quality of Young Hardwoods

Download or read book Stand Density a Factor Affecting Stem Quality of Young Hardwoods written by David L. Sonderman and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2A 14-year-old mixed oak stand was thinned in 1977 to stocking levels of 30, 50, and 60 percent and a control. From this stand, 117 trees were selected and their stem-related defects recorded. Six years later these same trees were reevaluated. The number of limb defects per square foot of surface area increased substantially more in the heavily thinned plots than in the unthinned plots. Trends in these data confirm commonly held beliefs that stand density affects stem quality after only a few years.S3.

Book Precommercial Crop tree Thinning in a Mixed Northern Hardwood Stand

Download or read book Precommercial Crop tree Thinning in a Mixed Northern Hardwood Stand written by Nancy G. Voorhis and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effectiveness of precommercial crop tree thinning was investigated by thinning crop trees of paper birch, yellow birch, and sugar maple to two intensity levels at 8 years of age. Analysis of covariance on post thinning growth measurements taken 7 years later indicated a significant increase in diameter and crown-diameter growth, with the pattern of response varying by species. The study suggests that a uniform crop-tree thinning treatment for a stand composed of species with varying tolerances will rarely produce the best response for all the species.

Book System 6 Alternatives

Download or read book System 6 Alternatives written by Bruce G. Hansen and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Three system 6 mill-size alternatives were designed and evaluated to determine their overall economic potential for producing standard-size hardwood blanks. The study focused on developing standard discounted cash flow measures. Internal rates of return ranged from about 15 to 35 percent after taxes. Secondary effort was directed at providing accounting cost summaries to facilitate cost comparison of standard-size blanks with rough-dimension stock. Cost per square foot of blanks ranged from about $0.88 to $1.19, depending on mill size and the amount of new investment required.S3.
