Book excerpt: As our closest stellar companion and composed of two Sun-like stars and a third small dwarf star, Alpha Centauri is an ideal testing ground of astrophysical models and has played a central role in the history and development of modern astronomy—from the first guesses at stellar distances to understanding how our own star, the Sun, might have evolved. It is also the host of the nearest known exoplanet, an ultra-hot, Earth-like planet recently discovered. Just 4.4 light years away Alpha Centauri is also the most obvious target for humanity’s first directed interstellar space probe. Such a mission could reveal the small-scale structure of a new planetary system and also represent the first step in what must surely be humanity’s greatest future adventure—exploration of the Milky Way Galaxy itself. For all of its closeness, α Centauri continues to tantalize astronomers with many unresolved mysteries, such as how did it form, how many planets does it contain and where are they, and how might we view its extensive panorama directly? In this book we move from the study of individual stars to the study of our Solar System and our nearby galactic neighborhood. On the way we will review the rapidly developing fields of exoplanet formation and detection.

Book MUNDANE STELLAR ASTROLOGY The ancient science of Hermes on the secret connections between the stars and their reflections on earthly beings and events

Download or read book MUNDANE STELLAR ASTROLOGY The ancient science of Hermes on the secret connections between the stars and their reflections on earthly beings and events written by GIACOMO ALBANO and published by WWW.ASTROLOGIAPREVISIONALE.NET. This book was released on 2021-08-25 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The techniques of mundane astrology inherited from tradition are not the most suitable for explaining and predicting events, as in reality they only capture the last links in the chain of celestial causes that underlie them. In fact, the primary causes of all events always and only reside in the Eighth Sphere, that is, in the sky of the constellations and fixed stars. In this book, the Stellar Astrology techniques are developed and applied to the real prediction of world events, but also to natal charts. Heaven and the stars that populate it are living beings. The various parts of the starry sky - constellations, parts of constellations (asterisms) and single stars - are not isolated, but communicate with each other, and therefore must be conceived as parts of a community, similarly to the relations between men who live on this earth. Indeed, our communities and our earthly bonds are nothing but the reflection and manifestation of these celestial bonds. And, just as happens between men and between specific groups of men, between some of these parts of the sky there are privileged relationships. This book explains which are the astronomical and astrological factors that highlight these ties of "kinship", thus also indicating the existence of similar relations existing between the things of the world linked to those stars. It is a real science, based on rigorous criteria, and in this book it is illustrated by providing the student with a general method that he can then apply to any person, thing or event he intends to study in depth. It will be seen how the identification of these stellar links is also essential for correctly interpreting a birth chart. Only in this way astrology becomes what it should always be, that is, the sapiential matter par excellence, as the only one capable of explaining and demonstrating the true nature and origin of earthly reality.

Book Unlocking the Secrets of White Dwarf Stars

Download or read book Unlocking the Secrets of White Dwarf Stars written by Hugh M. Van Horn and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-14 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: White dwarfs, each containing about as much mass as our Sun but packed into a volume about the size of Earth, are the endpoints of evolution for most stars. Thousands of these faint objects have now been discovered, though only a century ago only three were known. They are among the most common stars in the Milky Way Galaxy, and they have become important tools in understanding the universe. Yet a century ago only three white dwarfs were known. The existence of these stars completely baffled the scientists of the day, and solving the mysteries of these strange objects required revolutionary advances in science and technology, including the development of quantum physics, the construction and utilization of large telescopes, the invention of the digital computer, and the ability to make astronomical observations from space. This book tells the story of the growth in our understanding of white dwarf stars, set within the context of the relevant scientific and technological advances. Part popular science, part historical narrative, this book is authored by one of the astrophysicists who participated directly in uncovering some of the secrets of white dwarf stars.

Book Secrets of a Gay Marine Porn Star

Download or read book Secrets of a Gay Marine Porn Star written by Rich Merritt and published by Citadel Press. This book was released on 2017-05-31 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: YES, IT ALL REALLY HAPPENED JUST LIKE THIS... Here’s the story of Rich Merritt—the good son, teacher’s pet, Southern gentleman, model Christian student at Bob Jones University, Marine officer, and the not-so-anonymous poster boy for a New York Times Magazine article on gays in the military—whose complicated sexual past caused an international scandal when The Advocate “outed” him as “The Marine Who Did Gay Porn,” putting his life in a tailspin. It’s the compelling, poignant story of how a boy who never listened to pop music, never cursed, and didn’t have his first drink until he was eighteen exploded into a life of drugs, alcohol, promiscuity, prostitution, and pornography. And above all, it’s a triumphant story of self-forgiveness and identity, of a man who refused to allow himself to be defined by the standards of anyone else—gay or straight. Along the way, Rich Merritt writes with humor, compassion, insight and naked truth about: • What it’s really like growing up behind the “Fortress of Fundamentalism” and how he ultimately came to despise their views • The harsh realities of military life under the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” Clinton policy • A real insider’s experience of working in the male porn industry—the good, the bad, and the extremely hot • Why he chose not to reveal his porn past to the New York Times journalist • What it felt like to be the most notorious marine in the world and what it took to come through the fire By turns harrowing and heartbreaking, angry and affirming, Secrets of a Gay Marine Porn Star is that rarest of memoirs—a fascinating slice of life that reads like the most absorbing fiction, but is all true.

Book The Shadow of the Black Hole

Download or read book The Shadow of the Black Hole written by John W. Moffat and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Black holes are one of the extraordinary phenomena in the universe whose existence was surmised not by observations, but by theory. The black hole is a prediction of Einstein's 1915-1916 gravitational theory, general relativity, which replaced Sir Isaac Newton's gravity theory, published in his famous treatise Principia in 1687. In 1784, Reverend John Michell, a fellow of Queens' College and Professor of Geology at Cambridge University, had already envisioned what we now call black holes. He asked what would happen if a star's gravity were so strong that its escape velocity - the speed at which a rocket, for example, would have to travel to leave the star - exceeded the speed of light? Michell realized that any light emanating from the star would have to fall back to its surface. He speculated that the escape velocity would exceed the speed of light for a very massive star, making the star invisible to an observer"--
