Book excerpt: Sue K. is an attractive, accomplished production executive, whose acerbic wit and somewhat jaundiced outlook often prove intellectually challenging but romantically disastrous. This-coupled with a nightmarish mother and a certain sense of caution-results in the dissolution of Sue's relationship with Matt, her best friend and lover. Enter Stefi!Stefi is a latter-day hippie, an anachronistic 25-year-old flower child in tie-dyed clothes. Accompanied by the music of Led Zeppelin, the Stones, and the Beatles, she's a meteoric force who charges into Sue's life-and when things really get moving, Stefi disappears, leaving Sue in the thick of things. Having thrown caution to the wind, Sue is left to deal with the results. Stefi is the story of an amazing friendship, a spiritual, romantic comedy across the outlandish peaks and through the emotional valleys of two diametrically opposed women - one the catalyst, the other the vessel - seeking experiences that have eluded them both.

Book Musical Symbolism in the Operas of Debussy and Bartok

Download or read book Musical Symbolism in the Operas of Debussy and Bartok written by Elliot Antokoletz and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-07-22 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Musical Symbolism in the Operas of Debussy and Bartók explores the means by which two early 20th century operas - Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande (1902) and Bartók's Duke Bluebeard's Castle (1911) - transformed the harmonic structures of the traditional major/minor scale system into a new musical language. It also looks at how this language reflects the psychodramatic symbolism of the Franco-Belgian poet, Maurice Maeterlinck, and his Hungarian disciple, Béla Balázs. These two operas represent the first significant attempts to establish more profound correspondences between the symbolist dramatic conception and the new musical language. Duke Bluebeard's Castle is based almost exclusively on interactions between pentatonic/diatonic folk modalities and their more abstract symmetrical transformations (including whole-tone, octatonic, and other pitch constructions derived from the system of the interval cycles). The opposition of these two harmonic extremes serve as the basis for dramatic polarity between the characters as real-life beings and as instruments of fate. The book also explores the new musico-dramatic relations within their larger historical, social psychological, philosophical, and aesthetic contexts.

Book In the Darkroom

Download or read book In the Darkroom written by Susan Faludi and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Pulitzer Prize winner’s memoir of her search for her enigmatic father is “an absolute stunner . . . probing, steel-nerved, moving in ways you’d never expect” (New York Times). “In the summer of 2004 I set out to investigate someone I scarcely knew, my father. The project began with a grievance, the grievance of a daughter whose parent had absconded from her life. I was in pursuit of a scofflaw, an artful dodger who had skipped out on so many things—obligation, affection, culpability, contrition. I was preparing an indictment, amassing discovery for a trial. But somewhere along the line, the prosecutor became a witness.” So begins Susan Faludi’s extraordinary inquiry. When the feminist writer learned that her 76-year-old father—long estranged and living in Hungary—had undergone sex reassignment surgery, her investigation turned personal and urgent. How was this new parent who identified as “a complete woman now” connected to the silent, explosive, and ultimately violent father she had known? Faludi chases that mystery into the recesses of her suburban childhood and her father’s many previous incarnations: American dad, Alpine mountaineer, swashbuckling adventurer in the Amazon outback, Jewish fugitive in Holocaust Budapest. Her struggle to come to grips with her father’s metamorphosis takes her across borders—historical, political, religious, sexual—to bring her face to face with the question of the age: Is identity something you “choose,” or is it the very thing you can’t escape? “Riveting . . . Ms. Faludi unfolds her father’s story like the plot of a detective novel.” —Wall Street Journal “Penetrating and lucid . . . rich [and] arresting.” —New York Times Book Review “A gripping exploration of sexual, national, and ethnic identity.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review

Download or read book In the Lion s Den written by Nechama Tec and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-26 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few lives shed more light on the complex relationship between Jews and Christians during and after the Holocaust--or provide a more moving portrait of courage--than Oswald Rufeisen's. A Jew passing as a Christian in occupied Poland, Rufeisen worked as translator for the German police--the very people who rounded up and murdered the Jews--and repeatedly risked his life to save hundreds from the Nazis. In this gripping biography, Nechama Tec, a widely acclaimed writer on the Holocaust, recounts Rufeisen's remarkable story. A youth of seventeen when World War II began, Rufeisen joined the exodus of Poles who fled the approaching German army. Tec vividly describes how Rufeisen used his ability to speak fluent German to pass as half German and half Polish in Mir, where he came to serve as translator and personal secretary to the German in charge of the gendarmerie. As he carried out his duties--reading death sentences to prisoners, swearing in new police officers before a portrait of Hitler--he earned the trust and affection of the German commander, yet lived in constant fear of discovery. He used his position to pass secret information to Jews and Christians about impending "aktions" and to sabatoge Nazi plans. Most notably, he thwarted the annihilation of the Mir ghetto by arming hundreds of doomed Jews and organizing their escape, and saved an entire Belorussian village from destruction. Denounced, Rufeisen escaped and found shelter in a convent, where he converted to Catholicism. Though a pacifist, he spent the rest of the war fighting in a Russian partisan unit. After the war, Father Daniel (as he is now known) became a priest and a Carmelite monk. Identifying himself as a Christian Jew and an ardent Zionist, he moved to Israel, where he challenged the Law of Return in a case that reached the High Court and attracted international attention. Today he continues to devote himself to bridging the gap between Christians and Jews. In the Lion's Den offers a stirring portrait of a Jewish rescuer during the Holocaust and its aftermath, illuminating the intricate connections between good and evil, cruelty and compassion, and Judaism and Christianity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI) is a regional coordinating body for the National Informatics Societies of Europe. EFMI has organized a number of congresses. The Congresses in Cambridge 1978, Berlin 1979, Toulouse 1981, Dublin 1982 and Brussels 1984 were all successful in providing the wide variety of people in the caring and specialists in the computing profession with up-to-date inform ation from the expanding multidisciplinary field of medical inform atics. We hope that the sixth European Congress on Medical Informatics, MIE-85 in Helsinki will be equally successful. You have in your hand the pre-publication of papers to be presented at MIE-85 as well as the short abstracts of the posters. The proceed ings enable the participants to follow work presented at sessions that they are unable to attend. It also provides a permanent record with relevant bibliography for workers in the field of medical com puting. All the papers have been refereed and the referees' suggest ions incorporated in the final text. Rapid publication, using camera ready paper, reduces the time required for editing and indexing. The editorial board has worked hard to improve the standard of the communications and to reduce the number of errors. Very few papers did not arrive in time to be included in the proceedings: these are marked with * in the table of contents.

  • ISBN : 1476627118
  • Pages : 233 pages

Download or read book Music for the Superman written by David Huckvale and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-06-09 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friedrich Nietzsche regarded himself as the most musical philosopher--he played the piano, wrote his own compositions and espoused a philosophy encouraging all to dance for joy. Central to his life and his ideas were the music and personality of Richard Wagner, whom he both loved and loathed at different times of his life. Nietzsche had considerable influence on composers, many of whom employed Wagnerian sonorities to set his words and respond to his ideas. This book explores Nietzsche's relationship with Wagner, the influence of his writings on the music of Strauss, Mahler, Delius, Scriabin, Busoni and others, his place in Thomas Mann's critique of German Romantic music in the novel Doctor Faustus and his impact on 20th-century popular music.

Book A Transnational History of Forced Migrants in Europe

Download or read book A Transnational History of Forced Migrants in Europe written by Bastiaan Willems and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-08-11 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a vital exploration of the harrowing stories of mass displacement that took place in the first half of the 20th century from the perspective of forced migrants themselves. The volume brings together 15 interrelated case studies which show how the deportation, evacuation and flight of millions of people as a result of the First World War intensified rather than alleviated ethnic conflicts which culminated in population transfers on an even larger scale during and immediately after the Second World War. While each chapter focuses on a different group of refugees and displaced persons, the text as a whole looks at the experience of forced migration as a complex set of evolving relationships with the receiving society, the homeland, the broader diaspora and other migrant communities living within the same host country. This innovative, four-dimensional model provides an overarching conceptual framework that binds the chapters together within the longer arc of European history. By going beyond the conventional narratives of national victimhood and (un)successful assimilation of refugees, A Transnational History of Forced Migrants in Europe reveals that identities of forced migrants in the first half of the 20th century were individualised, hybrid and constantly reconstructed in response to socioeconomic forces and political pressures. The case studies collected in this volume further suggest that age, gender, social class, educational level and the personal experiences of 'unwilling nomads' are more important to the understanding of forced migration history than ethnoreligious identities of victims and perpetrators.

The last thing Rudy expected was to wake up one Saturday morning, a widow at fifty-four years old. Now, ten months after the untimely death of his beloved wife, he’s still not sure how to move on from the defining tragedy of his life—but his new job is helping. After being downsized from his finance position, Rudy turned to his first love: the piano. Some people might be embarrassed to work as the piano player at Nordstrom, but for Rudy, there’s joy in bringing a little music into the world. And it doesn’t hurt that Sasha, the Hungarian men’s watch clerk who is finally divorcing her no-good husband, finds time to join him at the bench every now and then. Just when Rudy and Sasha’s relationship begins to deepen, the police come to the store with an update about Rudy’s wife’s untimely death—a coworker has confessed to her murder—but Rudy’s actions are suspicious enough to warrant a second look at him, too. With Sasha’s husband suddenly reappearing, and Rudy’s daughter confronting her own marital problems, suddenly life becomes more complicated than Rudy and Sasha could have imagined. With Winston’s trademark humor and sweetness that will appeal to readers of Jennifer Weiner and Fredrik Backman but is uniquely her own, Lolly Winston delivers a heartfelt and realistic portrait of loss and grief, hope and forgiveness, and two imperfect people coming together to create a perfect love story.

Book Two Nuts in Italy

Download or read book Two Nuts in Italy written by Sue Ellen Haning and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-06 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traipsing through a foreign country with nothing but faith, a backpack, and an overly confident twenty-one-year-old daughter had never been a dream of fifty-six-year-old Sue Ellen Haning. But when her daughter, Jenny, proposed the trip, Haning, with reservation, finally agreed. A veteran teacher, she was excited to lose herself across the ocean, learn things by accident, and have adventure find her. Haning's friends thought she was nuts. In this travel memoir, Haning recounts the adventures she and her daughter experienced during a three-month summer backpacking trip in Italy. Their plan was to take a backpack, a little cash, no credit cards, stay in homes of Italians they did not know (or sleep on park benches, if necessary), have no itinerary, and stay in small towns for the full cultural experience. "Two Nuts in Italy" recounts an array of adventures-finding herself in bed with a strange Italian, surviving a five-hour car ride with a psychic who claimed she was the devil, and looking out the window of a moving train to see her daughter clinging to the side. It narrates a no-holds-barred travel experience that transformed Haning into a different person.
