Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book comprises biographical notes, of about 1000 words each, with a portrait photo, of 90 influential figures of the famous prewar Viennese school of neuropsychiatry, appearing together for the first time in a single volume. The entries focus on the academic lives and scientific contributions of pioneers in the neurological sciences viewed from a modern perspective. These updated profiles are based on substantial new research. The book includes a wide range of people, some famous Nobel laureates, and others less well known, from the era when Vienna was the epicenter of brain research. Despite the tragic circumstances of two World Wars, these pioneers remained resilient, willing to help others with an admirable dignity against adversity that leaves an indelible lesson to the later generations. Some fell victim of the Holocaust. Others overcame the constraints of National Socialism and ultimately settled overseas to nurture their ambitions and pursue their intellectual goals as physicians, researchers, and teachers. The monograph is a useful source for scholars interested in the evolution of ideas in basic neuroscience, clinical neurology, and neuropsychiatry, and the investigators who effected them.

Book Cardiovascular Eponymic Signs

Download or read book Cardiovascular Eponymic Signs written by Steven H. Yale and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-10 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a novel learning approach that complements and augments the prevailing method of case-based learning. Learning these signs requires the application and integration of the fundamental skills of observation, palpation, percussion, and auscultation, and in more advanced cases, the use of maneuvers performed at the patient’s bedside. The book provides a discussion of the utility of the signs and reviews the mechanism and pathophysiology of related cardiovascular diseases. Each chapter discusses eponymic signs for a variety of cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, heart failure, hypertension, venothromboembolism, ischemic heart disease, pericarditis, and peripheral vascular disease. Finding a particular sign during the physical examination enhances clinical suspicion for a specific cardiovascular disease, directing physicians to obtain more specific studies to confirm a diagnosis. This should lead to the delivery of more efficient care with the potential benefit of lowering health care costs. Cardiovascular Eponymic Signs: Diagnostic Skills Applied During the Physical Examination is an essential resource for physicians and related professionals, residents, fellows, and graduate students in cardiology, primary care, and internal medicine.

Book Word Formation and Transparency in Medical English

Download or read book Word Formation and Transparency in Medical English written by Pius ten Hacken and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-19 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a side effect of the rapid progress in medical research and of the emergence of new medical conditions, medicine is a domain where new concepts have to be named more frequently than in many other domains. Because of the prominent position of English in medical research, most of these concepts are first named in English. This raises questions relating to the naming strategies adopted and the consequences of the choice of particular strategies. These consequences are not restricted to English, because the English terms often need to be translated and are sometimes borrowed. This volume consists of an introduction and eight chapters. The first four chapters focus on the choice of naming strategy and the consequences for the transparency of the resulting names in English. These chapters address the international pharmaceutical nomenclature, the terminology of psychiatry and of middle-ear surgery, and the use of neoclassical word formation. The following four chapters concentrate on the issues of translation and borrowing evolving from the choice of names in English. They address translation into Spanish, Slovak, Polish and Turkish.
