Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Power Plant Auxiliaries and Accessories Most of the preventable losses in the engine rooms of steam power plants occur in connection with the auxiliary equipment. Generally speaking, there is not a great deal that the operating engineer can do to increase the efficiencies of the prime movers -the turbines or engines. It is also a fact - that, as a rule, the prime movers in a plant give relatively little trouble and involve relatively little maintenance expense. Most of the trouble and maintenance expense is due to the auxiliaries. Thus, it. follows that, in a sense, the auxiliary equipment comprises the most important part of that portion of the power-plant equipment which transforms the heat in the steam into power. Hence, in this book, it has been the endeavor to give such data as will enable the operator to select, and properly install, auxiliary equipment which will insure the generation of power at the least cost. Furthermore - and quite as important. - it has been the aim to provide the information whereby this auxiliary equipment can be so operated and maintained that its preventable losses will be a minimum and that its up-keep expense will be as small as is feasible. Drawings for all of the 411 illustrations were made especially for this work. It has been the endeavor so to design and render these pictures that they will convoy the desired information with a minimum of supplementary discussion. Throughout the text, principles which are presented are explained with descriptive expositions or with worked-out arithmetical examples. At the end of each of the 13 divisions there are questions to be answered and, where justified, problems to be solved by the reader. These questions and problems arc based on the text matter in the division just preceding. If the reader can answer the questions and solve the problems, he then must be conversant with the subject matter of the division. Detail solutions to all of the problems are printed in the appendix in the back of the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Steam Engine: A Practical Guide to the Construction, Operation, and Care of Steam Engines, Steam Turbines, and Their Accessories - Volume One is a work originally published by The American School of Correspondence and co-authored by Walter B. Snow and Walter S. Leland. The intent of the book is to introduce the great advances in steam power to the masses through a detailed but introductory description of a modern technology (at the time of writing) that would impact the lives of many. The Steam Engine is primarily intended for the enthusiast interested in steam power. The book begins with a detailed description of the steam engine, including the history of its development, a thorough examination of important engine parts, and an overview of the different types of steam engine. From there, the book progresses into a more focused discussion of engine operation and engine room accessories, including a vital section highlighting the importance of lubrication. The thermodynamics of the steam engine are then outlined, in what is probably the densest portion of the book. The text concludes with a look at the steam turbine, primarily focusing on its operation. The language included throughout is basic. The authors have intentionally excluded complicated mathematical theories in order to make this book approachable for the non-specialist. While some technical knowledge is certainly beneficial to reader's of The Steam Engine, one need not be an engineer in order to understand the principles discussed. As a practical guide to a complex technology, The Steam Engine is a great success. Enthusiasts will surely delight in the depth of information contained within this book, all of it presented in an easy to digest fashion. If you are at all interested in steam power, Snow and Leland's book is sure to please. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Steam Boilers and Boiler Accessories

Download or read book Steam Boilers and Boiler Accessories written by William Inchley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Boilers and Boiler Accessories: For Steam Users, Engineers, and Engineering Students IN this work an attempt has been made to produce a book of reasonable size which deals with the construction and working of Steam Boilers and their Accessories in a manner suitable for the requirements of steam users and engineering students generally. Technical details of boiler construction, such as the pitch of rivets, strength of plates, etc., are designedly omitted, since few readers will find themselves called upon to have expert knowledge on such questions, which must be left to the responsible boiler manufacturer. Only general principles of the strength of parts are here included. Chapter I. Briefly explains the various types of boilers in common use together with the materials used in their construction, after which the theory of combustion and steam generation is considered in Chapters II.-V. The method of treatment has been to avoid as far as possible the use of advanced mathematics - a difficult task when writing on the subject of Heat Transmission. In Chapter V. Prominence has been given to the effect on boiler performance of using high gas speeds, and the Author is indebted to Professor J. T. Nicolson, D.so., for much of the matter included therein. A detailed description of the various types of smoke-tube Boilers is given in Chapter VI., whilst Chapter VII. Is devoted to water-tube Boilers. In a book of this scope it has been found impossible to describe all the different types, but it is hoped that the majority of those boilers which have proved satisfactory in practice have been included.
