Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have women always been subordinated? If not, why and how did women’s subordination develop? Kinship to Kingship was the first book to examine in detail how and why gender relations become skewed when classes and the state emerge in a society. Using a Marxist-feminist approach, Christine Ward Gailey analyzes women’s status in one society over three hundred years, from a period when kinship relations organized property, work, distribution, consumption, and reproduction to a class-based state society. Although this study focuses on one group of islands, Tonga, in the South Pacific, the author discusses processes that can be seen through the neocolonial world. This ethnohistorical study argues that evolution from a kin-based society to one organized along class lines necessarily entails the subordination of women. And the opposite is also held to be true: state and class formation cannot be understood without analyzing gender and the status of women. Of interest to students of anthropology, political science, sociology, and women’s studies, this work is a major contribution to social history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive yet compact book, Michael J. Seth surveys Korean history from Neolithic times to the present. He explores the origins and development of Korean society, politics, and still little-known cultural heritage, showing how this ancient, culturally and ethnically homogeneous society was wrenched into the modern world, ultimately to be arbitrarily divided into two opposed halves after World War II. Tracing the six decades since, Seth explains how the two Koreas, with their deeply different political and social systems and geopolitical orientations, evolved into sharply contrasting societies. Throughout, he adds a rich dimension by placing Korean history into broader global perspective and by including primary readings from each era. All readers looking for a balanced, knowledgeable history will be richly rewarded with this clear and concise book.

Book excerpt: Among the major changes that swept through the music industry during the mid-nineteenth century was how musical performances were managed and directed. From a loose control shared between the violin-leader, musical director and maestro al cembalo to a system of tight and unified control under a professional conductor-manager. This process brought with it not only baton conducting in its modern form, but also higher standards, a new orchestral lay-out and a more focused rehearsal regime. The key figure in this process was Michael Costa whose uniquely powerful position in the operatic, symphonic and choral worlds provide a fascinating insight into the politics and changing aesthetics of the Victorian musical landscape.

Book A Brief History of the House of Windsor

Download or read book A Brief History of the House of Windsor written by Michael Paterson and published by Robinson. This book was released on 2013-06-20 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British monarchy may be over a thousand years old, but the House of Windsor dates only from 1917, when, in the middle of the First World War that was to see the demise of the major thrones of continental Europe, it rebranded itself from the distinctly Germanic Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to the homely and familiar Windsor. By redefining its loyalties to identify with its people and country rather than the princes, kings and emperors of Europe to whom it was related by birth and marriage, it set the monarchy on the path of adaptation, making itself relevant and allowing it to survive. Since then, the fine line trodden by the House of Windsor between ancient and modern, grandeur and thrift, splendour and informality, remoteness and accessibility, and influence and neutrality has left it more secure and its appeal more universal today than ever.

Book Does the Relationship Matter

Download or read book Does the Relationship Matter written by Dynasty Hill and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author, Dynasty Hill, was inspired to ask the world and nation the question, Does the Relationship Matter? It is a simple question but takes a deeper meaning that most would consider the topic basic. She expands a topic and challenges readers to question their relationship with food, technology, and drug and alcohol consumption to exercise. She reminds the reader that relationship with our loved ones, family, and friends, who are in our lives matter. And politicians that do not know us should not break family bonds. She tackles parenting concerns as the millennium raises their children to relationships with technology, adult gaming to Pokmon habits that have taken the conversation away at the dinner table and causing lives. She also challenges people to realize that technology from Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat have taken our voice away. And now we have become words, tweets, and emotional guessing games to emoji. The world is guessing how people feel instead of asking them personally.

Book Panoramas and Compilations in Nineteenth Century Britain

Download or read book Panoramas and Compilations in Nineteenth Century Britain written by Helen Kingstone and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-06 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how in nineteenth-century Britain, confronted with the newly industrialized and urbanized modern world, writers, artists, journalists and impresarios tried to gain an overview of contemporary history. They drew on two successive but competing conceptual models of overview: the panorama and the compilation. Both models claimed to offer a holistic picture of the present moment, but took very different approaches. This book shows that panoramas (360° views previously associated with the Romantic period) and compilations (big data projects previously associated with the Victorian fin de siècle) are intertwined, relevant across the entire century, and often remediated, making them crucial lenses through which to view a broad range of genre and forms. It brings together interdisciplinary research materials belonging to different period silos to create new understandings of how nineteenth-century audiences dealt with information overload. It argues for a new politics of distance: one that recognizes the value of immersing oneself in a situation, event or phenomenon, but which also does not chastise us for trying to see the big picture. This book is essential reading for students and scholars of nineteenth-century literature, history, visual culture and information studies.

It brings history to life as King Nabopolassar of Babylon invades Egypt, taking Nitocris, heir of the gods wife, captive to wed his son, Nebuchadnezzar. King Josiah, Judahs insurance of peace, is killed in an ill-advised battle against Pharaoh Necho, and the Prophet Jeremiah begins his true ministry as Prophet to the Nations. King Josiahs successors bring idolatry back to Judah and the nations erupt in a world war.
