Book Status Review for Westslope Cutthroat Trout in the United States

Download or read book Status Review for Westslope Cutthroat Trout in the United States written by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Executive Summary "on June 6, 1997, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) reveived a formal petition to list the westslope cutthroat trout (WST) as threatened throughout its range pirsuant to the Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973... The Service found no complelling evidence in support of recognizing distinct population segments for WCT. Instead, a single WCT population was recofnized for purposes of te status review...Evidence from the Missouri River basin indicated that a conspicuous decline in WCT stocks occurred early in the twentieth century. That decline was largly attributed to rapid, abundant colonization of mainstem rivers and their majoy tributaries by one or more introduced, nonnative dish species...The Service found that most of the habitat for extant WCT stocks lies on lands administered by federal agencies, particularly the U.S. Forest Service. Moreover, many of the stronghols for WCT stocks occure within roadless or wilderness areas of national parks, all of which afford considerable protetion to WCT... On the basis of the available information, the Service conculded that the WCT is not likely to become a threatened or endanered species with the foreseeable future.

Book excerpt: Cutthroat tells the full story of the genuine native trout of the American West. This new edition, thoroughly revised and updated after 20 years, synthesizes what is currently known about one of our most interesting and colorful fishes, includes much new information on its biology and ecology, asks how it has fared in the last century, and looks toward its future. In a passionate and accessibly written narrative, Patrick Trotter, fly fisher, environmental advocate, and science consultant, details the evolution, natural history, and conservation of each of the cutthroat's races and incorporates more personal reflections on the ecology and environmental history of the West's river ecosystems. The bibliography now includes what may be the most comprehensive and complete set of references available anywhere on the cutthroat trout. Written for anglers, nature lovers, environmentalists, and students, and featuring vibrant original illustrations by Joseph Tomelleri, this is an essential reference for anyone who wants to learn more about this remarkable, beautiful, and fragile western native.

Liknes and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exerpt From Abstract: "The distribution and abundance of westslope trout (Salmo clarki lewisi) has drastically declined over its historic range in the last 100 years. Although previous studies in Montana have identified strongholds, the status of westslope cutthroat statewide continued to be an uncertainty. The purpose of this report was to quantitatively determine the present and historic range as well as identify strongholds of genetically pure westlopw cutthroat in Montana... Statewide, 259 lakes contain or are believed to contain westslope cutthroat populations. Six percent are known to contain genetically pure populations. Fifteen of the 16 pure populations are found within Glacier National Park; the other population is located on the Flathead Indian Reservation. Only 4 lakes or reservoirs east of the continental divide were found to contain westslope populations."
