Book Status of the Majorana Demonstrator

Download or read book Status of the Majorana Demonstrator written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, the Majorana Collaboration is constructing the Majorana Demonstrator, an ultra-low background, 40-kg modular high purity Ge detector array to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in 76Ge. In view of the next generation of tonne-scale Ge-based neutrinoless double-beta decay searches that will probe the neutrino mass scale in the inverted-hierarchy region, a major goal of the Demonstrator is to demonstrate a path forward to achieving a background rate at or below 1 count/tonne/year in the 4 keV region of interest around the Q-value at 2039 keV. Lastly, the current status of the Demonstrator is discussed, as are plans for its completion.

Book The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR for 0 nu beta beta

Download or read book The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR for 0 nu beta beta written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Majorana Demonstrator will search for neutrinoless-double-beta decay (0[nu][beta][beta]) in 76Ge, while establishing the feasibility of a future tonne-scale germanium-based 0[nu][beta][beta] experiment, and performing searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model. The experiment, currently under construction at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, SD, will consist of a pair of modular high-purity germanium detector arrays housed inside of a compact copper, lead, and polyethylene shield. Through a combination of strict materials qualifications and assay, low-background design, and powerful background rejection techniques, the Demonstrator aims to achieve a background rate in the 0[nu][beta][beta] region of interest (ROI) of no more than 3 counts in the 0[nu][beta][beta]-decay ROI per tonne of target isotope per year (cnts/(ROI-t-y)). The current status of the Demonstrator is discussed, as are plans for its completion.

Book Status Update of the Majorana Demonstrator Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay Experiment

Download or read book Status Update of the Majorana Demonstrator Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrinoless double beta decay searches play a major role in determining neutrino properties, in particular the Majorana or Dirac nature of the neutrino and the absolute scale of the neutrino mass. The consequences of these searches go beyond neutrino physics, with implications for Grand Unification and leptogenesis. The Majorana Collaboration is assembling a low-background array of high purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in 76Ge. The Majorana Demonstrator, which is currently being constructed and commissioned at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, will contain 44 kg (30 kg enriched in 76Ge) of HPGe detectors. Its primary goal is to demonstrate the scalability and background required for a tonne-scale Ge experiment. This is accomplished via a modular design and projected background of less than 3 cnts/tonne-yr in the region of interest. The experiment is currently taking data with the first of its enriched detectors.

Book Massive Neutrinos Flavor Mixing Of Leptons And Neutrino Oscillations

Download or read book Massive Neutrinos Flavor Mixing Of Leptons And Neutrino Oscillations written by Harald Fritzsch and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-08-28 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the discovery of neutrino oscillations neutrino physics has become an interesting field of research in physics. They imply that neutrino must have a small mass and that the neutrinos, coupled to the charged leptons, are mixtures of the mass eigenstates, analogous to the flavor mixing of the quarks. The mixing angles for the quarks are small, but for the leptons two of the mixing angles are large. The masses of the three neutrinos must be very small, less than 1 eV, but from the oscillation experiments we only know the mass differences — the absolute masses are still unknown. Also we do not know, if the masses of the neutrinos are Dirac masses, as the masses of the charged leptons and of the quarks, or whether they are Majorana masses. In this volume, an overview of the present state of research in neutrino physics is given by well-known experimentalists and theorists. The contents — originated from talks and discussions at a recent conference addressing some of the most pressing open questions in neutrino physics — range from the oscillation experiments to CP-violation for leptons, to texture zero mass matrices and to the role of neutrinos in astrophysics and cosmology.

Book A Radiogenic Background Model for the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR

Download or read book A Radiogenic Background Model for the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR written by Micah Buuck and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrinoless double-beta decay (0v[BetaBeta]) is a lepton-number-violating process whose existence would indicate that neutrinos are Majorana fermions. The MAJORANA collaboration is searching for 0v[BetaBeta] in germanium-76 using a modular array of high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors with support and shielding constructed from low-background materials and housed at the 4850' level of the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota. The two modules of the experiment contain 44.8 kg of p-type point-contact high-purity germanium detectors, 29.7 kg of which are enriched in germanium-76. Both modules have been in operation since August 2016, and with 26 kg-yr of exposure have achieved a limit of 2.7 *1025 yr on the decay half life. The DEMONSTRATOR has achieved an excellent energy resolution of 0.1% FWHM at the 2039 keV region-of-interest (ROI), and has among the lowest ROI backgrounds of current generation 0v[BetaBeta] searches. Although the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR has achieved these low backgrounds, trace amounts of radioactivity remain detectable in the array. This work will present the results of an in-depth study of the backgrounds visible to the array, and the details behind a model for the remaining radiogenic backgrounds. The background model is a simultaneous fit of simulated energy spectra to groups of detectors and data sets, and has been validated with comparisons to Monte Carlo generated and detector calibration data.

Book The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR

Download or read book The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrino less double-beta (Ov beta beta) decay is a hypothesized process where in some even-even nuclei it might be possible for two neutrons to simultaneously decay into two protons and two electrons without emitting neutrinos. This is possible only if neutrinos are Majorana particles, i.e. fermions that are their own antiparticles. Neutrinos being Majorana particles would explicitly violate lepton number conservation, and might play a role in the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe. The observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay would also provide complementary information related to neutrino masses. The MAJORANA Collaboration is constructing the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR, with a total of 40-kg Germanium detectors, to search for the Ov beta beta decay of Ge-76 and to demonstrate a background rate at or below 3 counts/ (ROI.t.y) in the 4 keV region of interest (ROT) around the 2039 keV Q-value for Ge-76 Ov beta beta decay. In this paper, we discuss the physics of neutrinoless double beta decay and then focus on the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR, including its design and approach to achieve ultra-low backgrounds and the status of the experiment.

Book Effective Field Theories for Heavy Majorana Neutrinos in a Thermal Bath

Download or read book Effective Field Theories for Heavy Majorana Neutrinos in a Thermal Bath written by Simone Biondini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-02 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis we discuss the construction of an effective field theory (EFT) for non-relativistic Majorana fermions, show how to use it to calculate observables in a thermal medium, and derive the effects of these thermal particles on the CP asymmetry. The methods described in this thesis allow a systematic and effective description of the non-relativistic dynamics of a heavy Majorana fermion at finite temperature. The CP asymmetry is studied for hierarchical and nearly degenerate heavy-neutrino masses and the analysis includes the treatment of lepton-flavor effects. Heavy Majorana neutrinos are involved in many scenarios of physics beyond the standard model and, in the leptogenesis framework, they are at the root of the baryon asymmetry in the Universe. Besides simplifying exist in g results, the EFT approach provides useful tools for addressing even more involved observables. Indeed, taken together, the approach and the material presented here represent an important step toward a systematic improvement of our knowledge of the CP asymmetry in heavy-neutrino decays at finite temperature.
