Book Status Network and Structure

Download or read book Status Network and Structure written by Jacek Szmatka and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges much that has been written about the decline of sociology as a vital, essential area of inquiry into the human condition. Against this Greek chorus of woe, these papers show by example that sociology can make progress, select significant problems, and cumulate an integrated and coherent set of findings and theoretical understandings. Although the twenty papers in the book engage a wide variety of issues, they are united by their adherence to one of the most active and successful traditions in sociology, the group process tradition. Group process research programs can examine tractable problems posed by social psychological phenomena for which sociology has the best methods of study; they have the potential for a hardware-based, technological research front that discovers new phenomena; and they come closest of all approaches in sociological research to using cognitive criteria in the choice of problems and to studying immutable phenomena. The overall aim of the book is to provide models for researchers struggling to develop, construct, and integrate coherent sociological theory and knowledge. The papers are grouped around three themes: (1) the problem of theory construction in sociology, including what is meant by "theory” and the methods of testing it, particularly empirical testing; (2) the extension and elaboration of existing theories of group processes, notably in the study of status, sentiment, and the comparison process; and (3) the theoretical issues at the intersection of social structures, the pattern of connection in social networks, and the process of rational choice.

Book Toward a Structural Theory of Action

Download or read book Toward a Structural Theory of Action written by Peter H. Rossi and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toward a Structural Theory of Action: Network Models of Social Structure, Perception, and Action centers on the concept of social structure, perceptions, and actions, as well as the strategies through which these concepts guide empirical research. This book also proposes a model of status/role-sets as patterns of relationships defining positions in the social topology. This text consists of nine chapters separated into three parts. Chapter 1 introduces the goals and organization of the book. Chapters 2-4 provide analytical synopsis of available network models of social differentiation, and then use these models in describing actual stratification. Chapter 5 presents a model in which actor interests are captured. Subsequent chapter assesses the empirical adequacy of the two predictions described in this book. Then, other chapters provide a network model of constraint and its empirical adequacy. This book will be valuable to anthropologists, economists, political scientists, and psychologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epinets presents a new way to think about social networks, which focuses on the knowledge that underlies our social interactions. Guiding readers through the web of beliefs that networked individuals have about each other and probing into what others think, this book illuminates the deeper character and influence of relationships among social network participants. Drawing on artificial intelligence, the philosophy of language, and epistemic game theory, Moldoveanu and Baum formulate a lexicon and array of conceptual tools that enable readers to explain, predict, and shape the fabric and behavior of social networks. With an innovative and strategically-minded look at the assumptions that enable and clog our networks, this book lays the groundwork for a leap forward in our understanding of human relations.

Book Audience Structure and Status Multiplicity

Download or read book Audience Structure and Status Multiplicity written by Balazs Kovacs and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates status multiplicity, an under-theorized concept in sociological research. We assert that actors' status can vary both within and across audience segments and argue that embracing status multiplicity is important as it is local status, i.e., status as perceived by the actor's audience members, that drives action. We introduce a network-based conceptualization and measure of status multiplicity, and then use this measure to test our predictions in the setting of academic journal rankings and fragmentation in the field of management. The results show that (a) greater audience fragmentation corresponds to higher status multiplicity; (b) local status is a better predictor of actions than global status.

Book Networks Crowds and Markets

Download or read book Networks Crowds and Markets written by David Easley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-19 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are all film stars linked to Kevin Bacon? Why do the stock markets rise and fall sharply on the strength of a vague rumour? How does gossip spread so quickly? Are we all related through six degrees of separation? There is a growing awareness of the complex networks that pervade modern society. We see them in the rapid growth of the internet, the ease of global communication, the swift spread of news and information, and in the way epidemics and financial crises develop with startling speed and intensity. This introductory book on the new science of networks takes an interdisciplinary approach, using economics, sociology, computing, information science and applied mathematics to address fundamental questions about the links that connect us, and the ways that our decisions can have consequences for others.

Book Exploring Individual Status and Collaboration

Download or read book Exploring Individual Status and Collaboration written by Jameson McFarlane and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the most trendy and ubiquitous services provided on the web are online social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn to name a few. Participants of these social networking sites form and engage in a complex network system where individuals share information about their daily activities; keep abreast with families, friends, and acquaintances; as well as share and distribute knowledge and informational content to both their 'friends' in the network. The dynamic nature of online social networks and the dramatic increase in their popularity since the last decade provide a large-scale data store for the study of the structure, patterns of behavior, relationship roles and other resultant characteristics of the network graph among the social entities within the social network. This dissertation that examines various aspects of Social Network Analysis (SNA) contains one static SNA essay and two dynamic SNA cases studies. In the first essay, the focus is on the structure of online social networks, specifically Twitter, and how sitting United States governors utilize the social network to distribute information to citizens. Many of the key conceptual theories of static SNA including structural balance, transitivity, reciprocity, social cohesion, influence, dominance, conformity and social role are underscored. The study provides evidence that although transitivity and reciprocity occur with a high level of interaction, there is very little dominance in the structure of the network. The result supports other studies in this area. In addition, the study provides further evidence to support structural balance (or imbalance) of geographical homophily since the majority of the friends and followers of these governors are from their state. Moreover, the results indicate a network imbalance resulting in the isolation of the dissemination of resources and services to citizens. In the first case study, SNA graph theory is used to analyze the evolution and collaborations of cybersecurity education researchers in the domain of academic research. The primary emphasis is on analytic principles and concepts and the use of graph theory to represent the network data. Further, using the graph theories, we utilized SNA analytic tools to help make predictions about the principal network structure. This case study discusses many of the primary concepts of interpreting patterns of social ties among individuals in the network community. We examined the patterns of interactions among members of the network group to determine the structure of the network as well as the existence of cohesive sub-groups within the main network community. In addition, we analyzed the network to ascertain which central figure(s) play(s) key roles in the social network community. Not only is the structural prestige of a person in the social network a clear indication of the stability of the network but also a signal of the importance of social ties in the diffusion of information throughout the social system. Finally, we examined the social network to observe underlying correlating factors that have influenced the structure of the network with time. The second case study also uses SNA graph theory to analyze the evolution of research collaborations of Information Assurance Education (IAE), Security Education (SE) and Cybersecurity Education (CSE) researchers in primarily an academic domain. One of the primary objectives of this case study is to use a dynamic approach to explain the static topological features of the researchers in the collaborative network using a time framework. Within the past few decades, scholars and experts from the government, academia, and businesses from various local, regional and international institutions have collaborated on research topics in IAE, SE and CSE. The goal of this study is to analyze the research collaborations of IAE (that includes SE and CSE) educators who have published work in IEEE and ACM publications and other venues indexed by the IEEE and ACM digital libraries between 1999 and 2013. Specifically, we examine the structure of co-authorship in the IEEE and ACM community using various social network analysis (SNA) techniques and SNA tools. Overall, our results revealed a weakly connected IEEE and ACM network. Further, we saw a moderate increase in research collaboration at both institutional and cross-institutional levels. The results also show that the most prolific institutions are educational institutions related with the military.

Book From Network Structure to Policy Design in Water Protection

Download or read book From Network Structure to Policy Design in Water Protection written by Florence Metz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-05 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines a new concern in water quality policy, namely aquatic micropollutants. Micropollutants are chemicals detected in small concentrations in waterbodies today, originating from pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, or detergents, among others. Since the regulation of micropollutants is a fairly new issue, it has been largely neglected in social sciences. However, the search for appropriate solutions is of high political relevance at both the national and international levels, with many open questions arising that concern the most adequate governance structures and steering mechanisms. Solutions suitable for classical, macro-pollutants, such as nutrients, do not necessarily apply to micropollutants because of the diversity of compounds and sources, and for technical, financial, and societal reasons. The book addresses this knowledge gap by investigating the steering mechanisms at hand and their prospect for problem solving. In this regard, the research provides a systematic depiction and comparison of policy designs in place for the reduction of micropollutants in the Rhine basin. Moreover, the study yields insights into the governance structures in place, into actors’ responsibilities and constellations, and policy processes regarding micropollutants. The study is furthermore embedded into broader theoretical questions of policy research. More precisely, this research is a contribution to policy analysis that aims to achieve more optimal policy results by providing for a better understanding of the nature of policy designs and the social mechanisms behind the choice of them. Despite the intrinsic aim of policy analysis at contributing to more optimal policy outcomes, there remains a lack of research regarding analytical tools that enable an ex-ante assessment of policy designs’ problem-solving abilities. To explore such a research path, this book proposes a novel index of policy comprehensiveness for quantifying the prospective performance of policy designs in alleviating an underlying policy issue, e.g. reducing pollutants in waters. Furthermore, the book uncovers the social mechanisms behind policymaking and turns to the question: In which social settings is it possible to achieve a comprehensive policy design? Compared to purely micro-level explanations, the advantage of the network approach is that it goes beyond the mere aggregation of policy actors’ attributes by taking into consideration actors’ interdependencies. In order to take the network approach seriously, the study systematically links the structure of a policy network with comprehensive policy designs. Network concepts, such as coalition structure, interconnectedness, and belief similarity, are employed from policy change research here in order to explore the link between structural network characteristics and comprehensive policy design. By studying how network structures affect policy design, the book critically examines the explanatory value of the network approach.
