Book Opportunities to Improve the U S Geological Survey National Water Quality Assessment Program

Download or read book Opportunities to Improve the U S Geological Survey National Water Quality Assessment Program written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-04-05 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) established the National Water Quality Assesment (NAWQA) program in 1985 to assess water quality conditions and trends in representative river basins and aquifers across the United States. With this report, the NRC's Water Science and Technology Board has provided advice to USGS regarding NAWQA five separate times as the program evolved from an unfunded concept to a mature and nationally-recognized program in 2002. This report assesses the program's development and representative accomplishments to date and makes recommendations on opportunities to improve NAWQA as it begins its second decade of nationwide monitoring.

Book A Practitioner s Guide to Freshwater Biodiversity Conservation

Download or read book A Practitioner s Guide to Freshwater Biodiversity Conservation written by Nicole Silk and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2013-04-10 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Practitioner's Guide to Freshwater Biodiversity Conservation brings together knowledge and experience from conservation practitioners and experts around the world to help readers understand the global challenge of conserving biodiversity in freshwater ecosystems. More importantly, it offers specific strategies and suggestions for managers to use in establishing new conservation initiatives or improving the effectiveness of existing initiatives. The book: offers an understanding of fundamental issues by explaining how ecosystems are structured and how they support biodiversity; provides specific information and approaches for identifying areas most in need of protection; examines promising strategies that can help reduce biodiversity loss; and describes design considerations and methods for measuring success within an adaptive management framework. The book draws on experience and knowledge gained during a five-year project of The Nature Conservancy known as the Freshwater Initiative, which brought together a range of practitioners to create a learning laboratory for testing ideas, approaches, tools, strategies, and methods. For professionals involved with land or water management-including state and federal agency staff, scientists and researchers working with conservation organizations, students and faculty involved with freshwater issues or biodiversity conservation, and policymakers concerned with environmental issues-the book represents an important new source of information, ideas, and approaches.

Book Soil Hydrology Land Use and Agriculture

Download or read book Soil Hydrology Land Use and Agriculture written by Manoj Shukla and published by CABI. This book was released on 2011 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture is strongly affected by changes in soil hydrology as well as changes in land use and management practices and the complex interactions between them. This book aims to develop an understanding of these interactions on a watershed scale, using soil hydrology models and addresses the consequences of land use and management changes on agriculture from a research perspective. It includes case studies that illustrate the impact of land use and management on various soil hydrological parameters under different climates and ecosystems. It is suitable for researchers and students in soil sc

Book Restoration and Management of Lakes and Reservoirs Third Edition

Download or read book Restoration and Management of Lakes and Reservoirs Third Edition written by G. Dennis Cooke and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been more than ten years since the last edition of the bestselling Restoration and Management of Lakes and Reservoirs. In that time, lake and reservoir management and restoration technologies have evolved and an enhanced version of this standard resource is long overdue. Completely revised and updated, the third edition continues the tradition of providing comprehensive coverage of the chemical, physical, and biological processes of eutrophication and its control. The authors describe the eutrophication process, outline methods for developing a pre-management and restoration diagnosis-feasibility study, and provide detailed descriptions of scientifically sound management and restoration methods. See what’s new in the Third Edition: • New chapters on aquatic plant ecology and management • Emphasis on freshwater availability • A regional framework for water quality attainment • Methods of lake and reservoir restoration and management • Updates or revisions to all other chapters The book features in-depth discussions of techniques used to manage eutrophication in standing water bodies, procedures for using these techniques, the principles involved, and successes and failures through a selection of case studies and cost analyses. Each chapter includes an introduction to the scientific basis of the problem, a description of the methods and procedures, and presents several case histories. Potential negative impacts and costs, where known, are described. A useful classroom text, reference manual, and general guide, this is the text against which all other resources in this field are measured.
