Correspondence I have received, however, indicates that the first edition found a wider readership, being weIl received outside the chemical industry. Thus I would like to suggest that this second edition could be of use to anyone concerned with the development or the management of complex processes in any industry. Since the first edition was published in 1983 many readers will have experienced great change. The economic recession of the early 1980s caused many companies in the chemical and allied in dust ries to make severe staff cuts. These cuts were not entirely beneficial. They severely interrupted, even reversed, the slow learning process by which we ga in a better understanding of complex manufacturing processes. Thus we now have new staff attempting to solve old problems. The need for this book has, therefore, not diminished. Further change has been thrust upon us by our customers. They demand quality. Furthermore, they demand that we demonstrate our ability to produce quality consistently. Customers have also realized the benefits to be gained by reducing the number of suppliers they deal with. Thus we are striving for never ending process improvement in order to stay in business. Clearly, the need for this book has increased.
