Download or read book Statistical Charts and Indicators on the Situation of Youth 1970 1990 written by United Nations. Statistical Office and published by New York : United Nations. This book was released on 1992 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compendium provides statistical tables and charts and descriptive summaries of the main trends in the social and economic conditions of youth in 176 countries during 1970-90. Country specific tables are presented at the end of each of the five chapters on population, education and training, economic activity, health and childbearing, and households and marital status. Regional and subregional averages are based on unweighted data. Subregional averages are indicated where there are wide differences among countries. Data are obtained from official national and international sources. The world youth population aged 15-24 years was an estimated 519 million men and 493 million women in 1990 (>1 billion total). This total reflects a 52% increase since 1970. Over 80% of youth lived in developing regions. Over 60% lived in Asia. The annual growth rate of youth declined to 1-2% during the late 1980s. In 37 countries, the youth growth rate is increasing by more than 3% per year. In developed regions, the youth growth rate was under 0.5% per year. The male/female sex ratio was about 106:100. In 30 countries the sex ratio was higher. Over 50% of youth lived in urban areas in Eastern Europe and the USSR, other developed regions, North Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, East Asia, Southeast Asia, and West Asia. Most youth lived in rural areas in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Oceania. Almost 30% of young men aged 20-24 years were household heads in developed regions and sub-Saharan Africa. By age 20, few women were married, except in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Fertility rates among women aged 20-24 years were lowest in developed regions, except Eastern Europe and the USSR, and in East and Southeast Asia. 66% of youth lived in countries with very low per capita income (under $1000/year). Young women's illiteracy rates were higher than men's except in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Download or read book Gettin My Word Out written by Leoisa Ardizzone and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2007-08-03 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when many adults criticize young people as being self-absorbed and apolitical, this book demonstrates, through research conducted with inner-city youth activists, the inaccuracy of this judgment. Working through nonformal activist organizations, Leonisa Ardizzone examines how youth activists respond to injustice, counteract violence, practice social responsibility, and form collaborative networks of individuals and organizations. These peace-builders embody the core values of peace education. They and their nonformal activist organizations model practices and methods that, if applied to formal education, would not only create more humane learning experiences for all, but would also reconfirm education as a catalyst and framework for personal and social transformation.

Download or read book Statistical Sources for Social Research on Western Europe 1945 1995 written by Franz Rothenbacher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intention of this book is to give a picture of the complex material that has been published in the field of social and econornic statistics in Western Europe. Although there are many guides, bibliographies and reference books on special topics of this broad theme, a general overview has been missing. With this book I hope to fill this gap. The frame of reference is a scientific one: enabling and facilitating comparative social research on Western Europe. In some respect this book enlarges and updates the bibliography written by Peter Flora, "Quantitative Historical Sociology", pub lished in "Current Sociology" in 1975. In principle, this guide is an annotated bibli ography of the most important printed material in the field of official statistics. The legitimacy of such an approach lies in the fact that even today printed statistics are the most important form of dissemination of statistical results, although microcom puters, CD-ROMs and the Internet have changed this situation. In any case, a spe cial section on statistical databases is included for every country, describing the main databases of the statistical offices. Furthermore, the Internet address of each international or national statistical institute is provided in the introductory para graph. This enables the reader to get fast access to online databases and supple mentary online information on statistics via the Internet.
Download or read book Useful Theory written by Rebecca A. Goldstein and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the greatest challenges for students of critical education theory is making the connection between the theory and its practical application. Critical education theory is personal and political; it can be uncomfortable and freeing, while at the same time being challenging and transforming. Ultimately, critical educational theory is useful. Written in accessible language, this edited collection presents readers with different views of and insights into the topic and illustrates how to connect theory and practice to create a different vision of public education. This is the perfect text for undergraduate and graduate students of education.

Download or read book Democracy Human Rights and Regional Co operation in Southern Africa written by Dominic Milazi and published by Africa Institute of South Africa. This book was released on 2002 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era of African unity, the importance of the role of the sub-regions in working together, harmonising policies and addressing common challenges cannot be over-stated. The contributions to this volume were written by scholars of the Southern African Universities Social Sciences Conference (SAUSSC). Since its establishment in the 1970s, SAUSSC has served as a platform for discussions on issues affecting Southern African Societies. The papers focus on various social scientific and developmental issues with particular attention to the theme of the 2000 bi-annual conference, which was Democracy, Human Rights and Regional Co-operation in Southern Africa. The overriding preoccupation of most of the chapters is the regional challenges of sustainable democracy and development, and the associated problems of capacity building for democracy and respect for human rights. Other significant issues covered include civil conflict and management, peace and security, civil society and social development, citizenship and information technology.
