Book excerpt: The object of this paper, which assumes the validity of Paris's equation, is to derive satisfactory estimates of the two constants C and m in the following conditions: (1) numerical process leading to the estimates of C and m is based on a rationale that takes into account the physical and statistical aspects of fatigue crack growth, and (2) the result of the fit compares favorably with existing procedures.

Book Characterization of the Variability in Fatigue Crack Propagation Data

Download or read book Characterization of the Variability in Fatigue Crack Propagation Data written by DF. Ostergaard and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The variability in fatigue crack propagation is studied through the analysis of 68 sets of replica constant amplitude fatigue crack growth data. Each of the a versus N data sets are fit to the integral of a crack growth rate equation through a finite integral optimization routine. The routine determines the best fit crack growth parameters of the crack growth rate equation. Through characterization of the variability in the crack growth parameters and utilizing statistical theory, the variability in the a versus N data is predicted. The finite integral method of obtaining the crack growth parameters was shown to very accurately reproduce the a versus N data. The variability in the crack growth parameters showed a strong linear trend, and a regression analysis on the parameters provided information to accurately predict the variability in the fatigue crack propagation data.

Book Fatigue and Fracture Reliability Engineering

Download or read book Fatigue and Fracture Reliability Engineering written by J.J. Xiong and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-22 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue and Fracture Reliability Engineering is an attempt to present an integrated and unified approach to reliability determination of fatigue and fracture behaviour, incorporating probability, statistics and other related areas. A series of original and practical approaches, are suggested in Fatigue and Fracture Reliability Engineering, including new techniques in determining fatigue and fracture performances. It also carries out an investigation into static and fatigue properties, and into the failure mechanisms of unnotched and notched CFR composite laminates with different lay-ups to optimize the stacking sequence effect. Further benefits include: a novel convergence-divergence counting procedure to extract all load cycles from a load history of divergence-convergence waves; practical scatter factor formulae to determine the safe fatigue crack initiation and propagation lives from the results of a single full-scale test of a complete structure; and a nonlinear differential kinetic model for describing the dynamical behaviour of an atom at a fatigue crack tip. Fatigue and Fracture Reliability Engineering is intended for practising engineers in marine, civil construction, aerospace, offshore, automotive and chemical industries. It is also useful reading for researchers on doctoral programmes, and is appropriate for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in any mechanically-oriented engineering discipline.

Book Stochastic Approach to Fatigue

Download or read book Stochastic Approach to Fatigue written by K. Sobczyk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-04 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue of engineering materials is a very complicated process that is difficult to accurately describe and predict. It is no doubt nowadays, that a fatigue of real materials should be regarded as a random phenomenon and analyzed by use of stochastic theory. This volume of the lectures sumarises the latest achievements in stochastic modelling and analysis of fatigue. The lectures cover the following important aspects of modern analysis of fatigue: methodology of stochastic modelling of fatigue, tools for characterization of random fatigue loads, physical and mechanical aspects of random fatigue, basic stochastic models for fatigue and the estimation of fatigue reliability of specific structural systems.

Book Random Fatigue

Download or read book Random Fatigue written by K. Sobczyk and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years fatigue has been a significant and difficult problem for engineers, especially for those who design structures such as aircraft, bridges, pressure vessels, and cranes. Fatigue of engineering materials is commonly regarded as an important deterioration process and a principal mode of failure for various structural and mechanical systems. This book presents a unified approach to stochastic modeling of the fatigue phenomenon, particularly the fatigue crack growth process. The main approaches to construction of these stochastic models are presented to show their methodological consistency and potential usefulness in engineering practice. The analyses contained in this work should also inspire the development of new approaches for designing and performing fatigue experiments.

Book Probabilistic Analysis of the Fatigue Crack Growth Based on the Application of the Monte Carlo Method to Unigrow Model

Download or read book Probabilistic Analysis of the Fatigue Crack Growth Based on the Application of the Monte Carlo Method to Unigrow Model written by S. Bogdanov and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents results obtained from the combination of the UniGrow fatigue crack growth model with Monte-Carlo simulation method. Four sets of available statistical fatigue crack growth data were used for the analysis. The material resistance to the fatigue crack propagation was modelled as a random input parameter while the geometry and loading conditions were kept deterministic. The measure of comparison was chosen to be the distribution of the number of cycles required to propagate the crack from a certain initial to the desired deterministic size. The difference between the "within specimen" and "from specimen to specimen" variability is assessed. Influence of the former on fatigue crack growth predictions is demonstrated to be negligible. It is shown that the probability distributions obtained from the numerical analysis closely resemble distributions obtained from the available experimental data.

Book Analysis of Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Data from Different Laboratories

Download or read book Analysis of Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Data from Different Laboratories written by NE. Dowling and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple-minded yet quantitative approach to assessing interlaboratory fatigue crack growth rate data is proposed. Seven sets of da/dN versus ?K data from six laboratories on nominally the same material and loading conditions in a cooperative test program sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) are analyzed to illustrate this ad hoc approach. Each set of data is subjected to a standard first-order linear regression analysis based on the method of least squares. Three characteristics of the regression line [namely, the location of the "center" of the data, the slope, and the vertical half-width of the confidence band (for some specified level of confidence)] are used to define a composite measure of the closeness of one regression line to another. To illustrate the benefit of a statistically sound interlaboratory test program, the single-specimen SAE data are supplemented with fictitious replica data for the application of an interlaboratory data analysis procedure first proposed by Mandel (ASTM Standardization News, Volume 5, No. 3, 1977, p. 17). "New" information based on the ad hoc approach of this paper and Mandel's method of interlaboratory data analysis is discussed in the context of other work on fatigue crack growth rate data analysis and the economic aspect of engineering testing.
