We did not attempt to include references from the several related disciplines which are important in tree improvement work because of the vastness of the tree breeding literature. In all, more than articles are listed. The bibliography is arranged alphabetically by senior author. An index by subject matter begins on page 89. Book Tree Improvement Research at the Lake City Florida Research Center

Download or read book Tree Improvement Research at the Lake City Florida Research Center written by François Mergen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tree Improvement Research at the Lake City, Florida, Research Center: A Project Analysis Forest genetics at the Lake City, Florida, Research Center is financed jointly by the Florida Board of Forestry and the U. 8. Forest Service. Another cooperative agreement with the University of Florida's School of Forestry provides for the exchange of technical information on the project and joint use of facilities. Initially this research program was concentrated on the inheritance of gum production, a field in which the basic relationships have now been determined and one in which this project will continue to provide leader ship. Turpentining, however, no longer is the major end product of slash and longleaf pine in this region. Naval stores now is being integrated with other forest use. Therefore, the improvement of growth rate, quality, and resistance to disease and insects must also be considered. It has already been determined that gum yield is correlated with growth rate. Thus, primary emphasis is being given now to improvement of growth and quality, with gum yield as a secondary objective. The Lake City Tree Improvement Project complements correlated research in other southern research centers, i. E. The fundamental south wide studies at the Southern Institute of Forest Genetics, Gulfport, Mississippi; the applied aspects of tree selection and breeding being undertaken cooperatively by the State of Georgia and the Southeastern Forest Experiment Station at Macon and the University of Georgia School of Forestry at Athens, Georgia; the educational and research program in Forest Genetics at the School of Forestry, University of Florida, Gaines ville, Florida; the research and educational program in Forest Genetics of the Texas Forest Service, College Station, Texas; and related projects at Crossett, Arkansas, and elsewhere in the South. Download or read book Interim Forest Tree Improvement Guides for the Central States Classic Reprint written by Gustaf Adolph Limstrom and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Interim Forest Tree Improvement Guides for the Central States The Central States Forest Tree Improvement Committee was organized in 1958 to foster tree improvement programs in the Central States. This region, which once produced some of the finest hardwoods on the continent, can regain its prominence in this field only by concentrated research and action programs, including tree improvement. The Committee is made up of any and all who are interested in forest genetics. The objectives of the Committee's tree improvement program coincide so closely with those of the Station in this field that we are glad to be able to participate generally in its activities and especially glad to contribute personnel and editorial services and facilities for this joint publication. High on the Committee's list of objectives has been the development of guides for the selection of superior seed trees, best sources of seed for planting, and the establishment of seed-production areas and seed orchards. This publication, Interim Forest Tree Improvement Guides for the Central States, is the first of a series of papers the Committee plans to prepare to meet this objective.
