Book The Affordable City

Download or read book The Affordable City written by Shane Phillips and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Los Angeles to Boston and Chicago to Miami, US cities are struggling to address the twin crises of high housing costs and household instability. Debates over the appropriate course of action have been defined by two poles: building more housing or enacting stronger tenant protections. These options are often treated as mutually exclusive, with support for one implying opposition to the other. Shane Phillips believes that effectively tackling the housing crisis requires that cities support both tenant protections and housing abundance. He offers readers more than 50 policy recommendations, beginning with a set of principles and general recommendations that should apply to all housing policy. The remaining recommendations are organized by what he calls the Three S’s of Supply, Stability, and Subsidy. Phillips makes a moral and economic case for why each is essential and recommendations for making them work together. There is no single solution to the housing crisis—it will require a comprehensive approach backed by strong, diverse coalitions. The Affordable City is an essential tool for professionals and advocates working to improve affordability and increase community resilience through local action.

Book Missing Middle Housing

Download or read book Missing Middle Housing written by Daniel G. Parolek and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2020-07-14 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, there is a tremendous mismatch between the available housing stock in the US and the housing options that people want and need. The post-WWII, auto-centric, single-family-development model no longer meets the needs of residents. Urban areas in the US are experiencing dramatically shifting household and cultural demographics and a growing demand for walkable urban living. Missing Middle Housing, a term coined by Daniel Parolek, describes the walkable, desirable, yet attainable housing that many people across the country are struggling to find. Missing Middle Housing types—such as duplexes, fourplexes, and bungalow courts—can provide options along a spectrum of affordability. In Missing Middle Housing, Parolek, an architect and urban designer, illustrates the power of these housing types to meet today’s diverse housing needs. With the benefit of beautiful full-color graphics, Parolek goes into depth about the benefits and qualities of Missing Middle Housing. The book demonstrates why more developers should be building Missing Middle Housing and defines the barriers cities need to remove to enable it to be built. Case studies of built projects show what is possible, from the Prairie Queen Neighborhood in Omaha, Nebraska to the Sonoma Wildfire Cottages, in California. A chapter from urban scholar Arthur C. Nelson uses data analysis to highlight the urgency to deliver Missing Middle Housing. Parolek proves that density is too blunt of an instrument to effectively regulate for twenty-first-century housing needs. Complete industries and systems will have to be rethought to help deliver the broad range of Missing Middle Housing needed to meet the demand, as this book shows. Whether you are a planner, architect, builder, or city leader, Missing Middle Housing will help you think differently about how to address housing needs for today’s communities.

Book The Creation of a Federal Partnership

Download or read book The Creation of a Federal Partnership written by Margaret M. Brassil and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2010-11-03 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the ongoing recession and housing crisis, it has never been more important to understand the federal and state governments' roles in affordable housing. The Creation of a Federal Partnership takes a fresh look at the history of national and state housing policy by examining the role played by state housing agencies since the 1970s. Establishing new ground in the field, this volume discusses how the relationship between the federal and state levels has evolved over time. The result, Margaret M. Brassil argues, is that the federal government's broad policy guidelines allow states to better address their own social issues, an improvement for policy and ultimately for the people it serves.

Book New Directions in Old Age Policies

Download or read book New Directions in Old Age Policies written by Janie S. Steckenrider and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the changed political environment in the United States and what it means for the policies and programs benefiting the elderly and their families. It includes chapters written by distinguished contributors, such as Fernando Torres-Gil, Assistant Secretary for Aging, Clinton Administration, and discusses specific, realistic policy options for the future. New Directions in Old-Age Policies suggests that old-age policy in the changed political environment is a paradox of competing agendas: individual versus fiscal responsibility in policy choices, doing more for the elderly and their families with fewer public resources, and prioritizing the status quo or change in policy decisions for the elderly.

Book Physical infrastructure crosscutting issues planning conference report

Download or read book Physical infrastructure crosscutting issues planning conference report written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nation's physical infrastructure consists of a broad array of systems and facilities that house and transport people and goods and provide services. Among other things, this infrastructure includes transportation networks, including roads, airports, rail, and mass transit; housing; federal buildings and facilities; and postal and telecommunications services. These systems and facilities do not exist in isolation: decisions about where to build or expand roads affect decisions about housing and vice versa, and, in turn, these decisions affect the need for and location of public facilities and communications and energy services. Historically, the federal government has supported the construction of much of this infrastructure and helped to ensure the safety of services it provides. It builds, owns, operates, and maintains federal infrastructure such as federal buildings, dams, and waterways; financially assists state and local governments to build, own, operate, and maintain facilities such as roads, transit systems, and airports; and regulates public works. State and local governments and the private sector also play significant roles in planning, developing, and maintaining this infrastructure.
