Changes in technology have changed every aspect of life: from contraception to computation, from communication to community formation. These changes have affected the ways in which Australians have sought meaning in their lives, from the fulfilment of duty to the maximisation of subjective wellbeing. They have affected deeply the role that religion has played in life with the focus moving from the preservation of tradition to personal spirituality. Over the past 30 years, the Christian Research Association has charted these changes. It has done so through the examination of census and survey data and through interviews with thousands of individuals. It has examined these changes in youth culture and rural culture and has explored the impact of migration and the rise of the Pentecostal and charismatic movements. It has suggested ways in which churches and schools might respond to these changes. Part 1 of this book tells the story of these changes and how the Christian Research Association has charted them. Part 2 contains contributions from various researchers discussing how the Christian Research Association has served the churches. Part 3 explores some extensions of and parallels to the work of the Christian Research Association in relation to religious institutions, migration and other research. The story told in this book is a personal story for Dr Philip Hughes, the senior research officer of the Christian Research Association from 1985 to 2016. But it is also a story of global significance as Christian and other religious institutions grapple with changes to their place in society and their roles in changing perceptions of life.

Book excerpt: The Commonwealth Youth Bureau (then in the Commonwealth Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs) contracted the Youth Research Centre to conduct a three-year study of a sample of young participants in State Government Sponsored Youth Development Programs. These programs operated in several states and involve young people (usually through schools) in activities and training with community and service organisations. In the Centre's research, thirty young program participants in each of Victoria (in the Victorian Youth Development Program), South Australia (in the Activ8 Premier's Youth Challenge) and Western Australia (in Cadets WA) were interviewed several times during their involvement and after they finish these programs. The research attempted to learn about the expectations and experiences of young people in Youth Development Programs, and about the impact of these programs on their lives. In 2001, the research was in its 'set-up' phase, with instruments developed and approved, schools selected and some base-line information collected through interviews with students before they entered the programs. In 2002, interviews were undertaken in 12 schools with 60 young people. In 2003, the sample of schools was expanded to 18 (six in each state).

Previous Australian studies have found that care-experienced young people demonstrate poorer outcomes in health, education, and the criminal justice system throughout their life course. However, this multi-layered case study is the first to specifically address barriers in obtaining higher education—an effective tool for social mobility. In particular, the authors unpack how university marketing relies on young people to have a parent who understands tertiary education transitions to help them navigate post-school pathways to careers or higher education, as well as how policies might fail to help students who do not have such a figure in their lives. The authors offer suggestions for policy change in Australia while providing a basis for global comparisons and recommendations for how care-experienced young people and their support networks can overcome present challenges.

Book excerpt: Rethinking Youth Citizenship After the Age of Entitlement provides a primer for exploring hard questions about how young people understand, experience and enact their citizenship in uncertain times and about their senses of membership and belonging. It examines how familiar modes of exclusion are compounded by punitive youth policies in ways that are concealed by neoliberal discourses. It considers the role of key institutions in constructing young people's citizenship and looks at the ways in which some young people are opting out of established enactments of citizenship while creating new ones. Critically reflecting on recent scholarly interest in the geographical, relational, affective and temporal dimensions of young people's experiences of citizenship, it also reinvigorates the discussion about citizenship rights and entitlements, and what these might mean for young people. The book draws on global research and theories of citizenship but has a particular focus on Australia, which provides a unique example of a country that has fared well economically yet is mimicking the austerity measures of the United Kingdom and Europe. It concludes with an argument for a rethinking of citizenship which recognises young people's rights as citizens and the ways in which these interact with their lived experience at a time that has been characterised as 'the end of the age of entitlement'.
