Book Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment

Download or read book Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment written by Committee on Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-02-01 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly three decades, methadone hydrochloride has been the primary means of treating opiate addiction. Today, about 115,000 people receive such treatment, and thousands more have benefited from it in the past. Even though methadone's effectiveness has been well established, its use remains controversial, a fact reflected by the extensive regulation of its manufacturing, labeling, distribution, and use. The Food and Drug Administration regulates the safety and effectiveness of methadone, as it does for all drugs, and the Drug Enforcement Administration regulates it as a controlled substance. However, methadone is also subjected to a unique additional tier of regulation that prescribes how and under what circumstances it may be used to treat opiate addiction. Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment examines current Department of Health and Human Services standards for narcotic addiction treatment and the regulation of methadone treatment programs pursuant to those standards. The book includes an evaluation of the effect of federal regulations on the provision of methadone treatment services and an exploration of options for modifying the regulations to allow optimal clinical practice. The volume also includes an assessment of alternatives to the existing regulations.

Book Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Save Lives

Download or read book Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Save Lives written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-06-16 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The opioid crisis in the United States has come about because of excessive use of these drugs for both legal and illicit purposes and unprecedented levels of consequent opioid use disorder (OUD). More than 2 million people in the United States are estimated to have OUD, which is caused by prolonged use of prescription opioids, heroin, or other illicit opioids. OUD is a life-threatening condition associated with a 20-fold greater risk of early death due to overdose, infectious diseases, trauma, and suicide. Mortality related to OUD continues to escalate as this public health crisis gathers momentum across the country, with opioid overdoses killing more than 47,000 people in 2017 in the United States. Efforts to date have made no real headway in stemming this crisis, in large part because tools that already existâ€"like evidence-based medicationsâ€"are not being deployed to maximum impact. To support the dissemination of accurate patient-focused information about treatments for addiction, and to help provide scientific solutions to the current opioid crisis, this report studies the evidence base on medication assisted treatment (MAT) for OUD. It examines available evidence on the range of parameters and circumstances in which MAT can be effectively delivered and identifies additional research needed.

Download or read book Methadone Matters written by John Strang and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-04-03 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methadone heals, but methadone kills. Methadone is a life-saving treatment, but methadone is also a life-threatening poison. The challenge is how to confer the benefit without incurring the harm. And that is what this book is all about. Methadone is by far the most widely prescribed drug in the treatment of heroin addiction, and yet, all too often, we are clumsy in our use of this powerful drug. So how much of the observed benefit is to do with methadone itself? Does dose matter? How important is the psychosocial component of care? How can problems of poor compliance be addressed? Is supervised consumption feasible, and, if so, is it justifiable and beneficial? And what is injectable methadone all about? When is it ever prescribed, and for whom, and how? And what about the dangers? Methadone itself can be the actual drug of overdose. How successful have efforts been made to re-structure methadone treatment to prevent overdose deaths? and how can the problems of diversion to the illicit market be kept to a minimum? This multi-authored book, comprising chapters from the best of clinicians, researchers and policymakers, is the essential guide to increasing the relevance and effectiveness of methadone treatment. Like it or loathe it, Methadone Matters.

Book Clinical Guidance for Treating Pregnant and Parenting Women with Opioid Use Disorder and Their Infants

Download or read book Clinical Guidance for Treating Pregnant and Parenting Women with Opioid Use Disorder and Their Infants written by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (US) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-04-20 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Guide provides comprehensive, national guidance for the optimal management of pregnant and parenting women with OUD and their infants based on the recommendations of experts reviewing the limited evidence available for this population as of 2017. In the past, only one option was available for OUD treatment in pregnant women. Today, more options are available, so healthcare professionals need to provide more education to their patients and obtain their detailed informed consent to ensure decision-making is shared between the pregnant woman or new mother and the healthcare professional. This Guide will help healthcare professionals and patients determine the most clinically appropriate action for a particular circumstance, with the expectation that the healthcare professionals will make individualized treatment decisions. A cornerstone of the Guide is that a healthy pregnancy results in a healthy infant and mother. The Guide recognizes the mother and infant as a dyad, and the recommendations are provided in light of what actions will optimize the outcomes for the mother-infant dyad as a whole, with guidance provided from preconception to several months postpartum and for the first few years of infant development.
