Download or read book Housing Decisions for the Elderly written by Leon A Pastalan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1995-09-25 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because many elderly wish to age in place, they typically give little thought to the future of their housing options. Housing Decisions for the Elderly articulates the relevant issues regarding the diversity and complexity of housing decisions in terms of moving or not moving. To move or not to move is really part of the aging-in-place debate. In this guidebook, the authors deal with such issues as changes in economic income and stances; changes in household composition and health; and the psychosocial and metaphysical significance of “house.”This treatment of housing decisions regarding aging in place serves to assist professionals and laypersons to help the elderly make more informed choices and to plan better for the future. Housing Decisions for the Elderly reminds those who work with elderly persons--community organization workers; housing counselors and specialists; home health care agencies; and gerontologists--that the proportion of persons living in family settings decreases with age, so that the older the person, the more likely he or she will be living above or with nonrelatives in institutional or quasi-institutional settings. While changes in household composition typically occur at one or more points in the aging process such as death of spouse, incapacitating illness or loss of income, other housing issues to consider are addressed: why socioeconomic determinants of housing decisions of elderly homeowners focuses primarily on housing characteristics (owning vs. renting), length of housing tenure, age, and support from relatives how elderly housing assistance programs affect housing tenure deals with age as the single most important factor factors that influence pre-retiree’s propensity to move at retirement access to health care, freedom from house maintenance, and supportive services as the main determinants of moving to a continuing care retirement community

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responding to the growing population of older persons and the subsequent interest in providing progressive living environments, Succcessful Administration of Senior Housing is a comprehensive resource offering an increased awareness of management strategies and tools to better respond to frailty among elderly tenants. This insightful volume outlines ways of better serving elderly tenants and highlights the importance of collaboration among housing managers, social service providers, and health care professionals to more effectively and humanely serve the needs of elderly renters. To date, housing professionals have received little concrete help or assistance from experts, public policymakers or gerontologists; Successful Administration of Senior Housing is a welcome addition that will help fill this void by outlining ways to better manage the complex problems and issues that emerge as elderly tenants experience increased needs for supportive services. This helpful volume was written for housing professionals, social service providers and health care professionals who work with older persons living in age-segregated housing. It will also be useful in the academic setting for continuing education programs for housing managers and social service providers. "Sheehan addresses the issue of managing housing for the elderly from a ′care management′ perspective. She provides a creditable orientation to the unique housing needs of the elderly and effectively incorporates relevant research in each of the book′s chapters. . . . Download or read book Federal and State Initiatives to Integrate Acute and Long term Care written by Edward Alan Miller and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In exploring integration of acute and long-tern care, this book begins by characterising the dually eligible population, and describing problems associated with meeting their health and social service needs in an uncoordinated system. It continues by analysing the advantages of using capitation and care management as a vehicle for integrating those services, and by discussing concerns about care integration strategies. It concludes by profiling nine federal and state programs that to varying degrees, integrate the acute and long-term care services that people who are dually eligible for Medicare-Medicaid, often require. They are: Federal initiatives such as the Program for All-inclusive Care of the Elderly (PACE), which capitates both Medicare and Medicaid acute and long-term care services for those who are dually eligible, and the Social/Health Maintenance Organization (S/HMO) and EverCare demonstrations, which capitate Medicare benefits only; Comprehensive state demonstrations such as Minnesota Senior Health Options, the Wisconsin Partnership Program, and the Continuing Care Network Demonstration of Monroe County, New York, which, like PACE, capitates both Medicare and Medicaid benefits; and Capitated state Medicaid demonstrations such as the Arizona Long-Term Care System, Oregon Health Plan, and Florida's Community-Based Diversion Pilot Project, which capitate Medicaid only, but actively pursue various Medicare co-ordination strategies. Proposals that explore using care management techniques to integrate Medicare and Medicaid services delivery, without capitation, are also discussed briefly. The book concludes with the observation that although federal and state initiatives to integrate acute and long-term care for those who are dually eligible, only serve a relatively small percentage of this population, they provide a set of options which Congress may want to examine when formulating long-term care policy in the future.
Download or read book Permanent Supportive Housing written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-08-11 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic homelessness is a highly complex social problem of national importance. The problem has elicited a variety of societal and public policy responses over the years, concomitant with fluctuations in the economy and changes in the demographics of and attitudes toward poor and disenfranchised citizens. In recent decades, federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, and the philanthropic community have worked hard to develop and implement programs to solve the challenges of homelessness, and progress has been made. However, much more remains to be done. Importantly, the results of various efforts, and especially the efforts to reduce homelessness among veterans in recent years, have shown that the problem of homelessness can be successfully addressed. Although a number of programs have been developed to meet the needs of persons experiencing homelessness, this report focuses on one particular type of intervention: permanent supportive housing (PSH). Permanent Supportive Housing focuses on the impact of PSH on health care outcomes and its cost-effectiveness. The report also addresses policy and program barriers that affect the ability to bring the PSH and other housing models to scale to address housing and health care needs.

Download or read book Ending the Stalemate written by Mary K. Nenno and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1996 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ending the Stalemate assesses housing and urban development programs of the past 60 years, examines current urban conditions and interventions, and recommends steps that should be taken to link housing assistance, neighborhood renewal and urban development/redevelopment with the forces reshaping urban life. Mary K. Nenno has found that past housing and urban development efforts have been characterized by starts and stops, with significant action coming only in times of national crises such as economic depression or city disturbances. Comprehensive national initiatives to revitalize cities and declining metropolitan areas have been dormant for over two decades despite growing evidence of physical, economic, and human distress. Nenno finds hope for future progress in the opportunities provided by mainstream forces now at work in urban areas: the emergence of the 'urban region' as the base for joining cities and their outlying metropolitan areas in a new relationship; and the prospect of comprehensive improvement strategies based on partnerships between public, private, and citizen-based entities.
