Book The Oxford Handbook of Women and Competition

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Women and Competition written by Maryanne L. Fisher and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-14 with total page 857 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While women are generally perceived to be less competitive than men, women compete in many ways and in a variety of situations. Women try to make themselves look more attractive to draw the attention of a desirable mate. They will use gossip as a form of informational warfare to influence reputations. They compete as mothers to gain access to resources that directly influence the health of their children. They use selfies posted on social media to manipulate others' perceptions. Women compete all of their lives: in the womb, through adolescence and adulthood, and into their elder years. The topic of women's competition has gained significant momentum over the years. Edited by Maryanne L. Fisher, The Oxford Handbook of Women and Competition provides readers with direct evidence of this growth and is one of the first scholarly volumes to focus specifically on this topic. Fisher and her team of contributors offer a definitive worldview of the current state of knowledge regarding competition among women today. Many of the chapters are grounded within an evolutionary framework, allowing for authors to investigate the adaptive nature of women's competitive behaviors, motivations, and cognition. Other chapters rely on alternative frameworks, with contributors also asserting that socio-cultural forces are the culprit shaping women's competitive drives. Additionally, several contributors focus their attention on issues faced by adolescent girls, and explore the developmental trajectories for young women through adulthood. Designed to serve as a source of inspiration for future research and direction, The Oxford Handbook of Women and Competition is a stand-out scholarly text focusing on the many competitive forces driving women today.

Book The Influence of Competition on Anxiety Levels of Women s Intercollegiate Basketball Players

Download or read book The Influence of Competition on Anxiety Levels of Women s Intercollegiate Basketball Players written by Kathleen Connell and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to assess the anxiety levels of women at Springfield College who were participating in intercollegiate basketball. The problem was concerned with anxiety as measured by the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and its influence on performance. (45) The first sub-problem was to ascertain whether there were any changes in pre-game and post-game state anxiety levels. The second sub-problem was to determine whether there were any differences in the state anxiety scores obtained from the three games designated "highly anxious" as compared to the three games that are "low anxious” in nature. The third sub-problem was concerned with whether there were any changes from the initial trait anxiety level, obtained on the X-2 form of the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), prior to the season, to those trait anxiety scores obtained on the STAI at the season's end. The following stressful or anxiety producing situations involving basketball performance are listed below in the order of the intensity of the performance: 1. The Regional Championship Tournament, with testing pre- and post-performance for state anxiety levels. 2. All regularly scheduled games, with testing of state anxiety prior to and after competitive performance.

Book Investigating Life Stress Competitive Trait Anxiety and Competitive State Anxiety with Athletic Injury Occurrence in NCAA Division I Athletes

Download or read book Investigating Life Stress Competitive Trait Anxiety and Competitive State Anxiety with Athletic Injury Occurrence in NCAA Division I Athletes written by Nikki Marie Ramella-DeLuca and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship of life stress, competitive trait anxiety and competitive state anxiety, with injury occurrence in NCAA Division I athletic teams. Life stress was measured by the Life Events Survey for Collegiate Athletes. The Competitive State Anxiety Test and Marten's Sport Competition Trait Anxiety Test calculated competitive anxiety. After calculating means and standard deviations for each measure, a multiple regression was run. A two-way ANOVA was used to determine differences between sport and gender. The results of the study indicated there was no effect of gender for trait anxiety, cognitive and somatic state anxiety or gender. A significant main effect was found between gender and self-confidence. There was no effect of gender for life stress. There was no effect of sport for cognitive state anxiety, somatic state anxiety, self-confidence, or life stress. The CSAI-2 self-confidence showed no significant difference between sport. No significant relationships were noted between injury score and any of the independent variables.

Book Dimensions of Anxiety and Their Effect on an Aspect of the Performance Process

Download or read book Dimensions of Anxiety and Their Effect on an Aspect of the Performance Process written by Ralph Richard Schoenfeld and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pressure and anxiety of performing well will increase as the importance of winning continues to be stressed in competitive sports. The purpose of this study was to investigate the anxiety-performance relationship in an applied, field-tested manner by examining the relationship between competitive state anxiety and the incidence of mental errors committed under various levels of competition. Male and female elite athletes of the men's and women's basketball teams from the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Regina (Saskatchewan, Canada) made up the subject population for this study. The study utilized the Sport Competition Anxiety Test (SCAT, Martens, 1977) to measure trait anxiety (Trait-A), and the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2, Martens, Burton, Vealey, Bump & Smith, 1983) to assess the multidimensional nature of state anxiety (State-A). A Mental Error Questionnaire was developed by the researcher in collaboration with the participating teams' coaching staffs to evaluate the commission of mental errors. Independent variables consisted of gender, and competition, while commission of mental errors and dimensions of state anxiety served as the dependent variables. Seven primary hypotheses were tested using one-way ANOVAs, correlation and multiple regression analyses, while two secondary hypotheses were tested using two-way ANOVAs to determine interaction effects. Findings of the study included: (1) low to moderate correlations for SCAT's ability to predict state anxiety dimensions (as measured by the CSAI-2); (2) no significant differences between the dimensions of anxiety or gender and the commission of mental errors; (3) a significant difference between gender and anxiety for the cognitive anxiety dimension; (4) a significant difference between the commission of mental errors and cognitive and somatic anxiety dimensions; (5) a significant difference between the level of competition and somatic anxiety for the practice condition; (6) no significant difference between the level of competition and the commission of mental errors; (7) significant predictor variables (cognitive anxiety and self-confidence) for mental errors on competition, and (8) no significant interaction effects between levels of competition and gender with respect to dimensions of anxiety or the commission of mental errors. Therefore, it was concluded that neither gender nor the level of competition appear to have a significant impact on the dependent variables.
