Book The Government of Maryland Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Government of Maryland Classic Reprint written by Ella Lonn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of Maryland In the writing of this guide to the scheme of gov ernment of our state, the author has set as her goals; accuracy, brevity, and clearness. She realizes fully that the curtain has been merely lifted on one fascinating phase after another of our government's activities. But it is hoped that the glimpse will lure readers on to fur ther study. It is difficult to condense into paragraphs what can be handled adequately only by whole chapters. Citation of authorities has had to be largely eliminated. Even the bibliographies are drawn so as to direct to the most suitable and accessible references rather than to furnish complete lists of authorities. It is hoped that the qualities striven for are present in sufficient measure to induce readers to follow its dry pages, if not with pleasure, at least with some profit. That it will prove to be without error she knows better than to hope. A com prehensive and absolutely accurate piece of work, especially on so involved and difficult a subject as govern ment, is not prepared in a few short months. Most of all, it is hoped that the book will prove a handy book of refer ence at a time when citizens are going to need to know just what duties pertain to each state office. We ask that we be judged by what we have attempted, and not by what we might or, possibly, ought to have undertaken. Grateful acknowledgment is made to Mr. A. S. Cook, State Superintendent of Education, and Mr. F. R. Kent for kindly reading the chapters on Education and Political Parties, respectively. In a very special way the author wishes to acknowledge her indebtedness to Dr. Horace Flack and Miss Ella Hitchcock of the Department of Legislative Reference, without whose valuable compila tions, materials, and constant friendly helpfulness the task would have been impossible in the time available. Dr. Flack has in addition read and made valuable sug gestions for four chapters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book An Address to the People of Maryland Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Address to the People of Maryland Classic Reprint written by William Handy Collins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-03 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address to the People of Maryland I trust the condition of public affairs will secure your par don for the language I venture to address to you on the mo mentons questions which agitate the public mind. My life, and the lives of those from whom I sprung, have been passed on your soil. Though I have never sought office at your hands, or at those of the General Government, I trust I need not say to those of you Who know me, that my whole circle of influence (small as it may have been) has been in favor of the welfare and continuance of the Union of the States, and of the welfare and honor of the State of Maryland. If asked whether I love the Union or the State of Mary land most, my reply is prompt and frank. I love the Union most. Born under the Union-my heart has leapt at that glorious name from the earliest recollections of my childhood to the frosty years of an age which, though it has impaired my health and activity, has not diminished the intensity of the love I bear my country. Her glory, her honor, her power, her union, her happiness and welfare, now and for ever, are dearer to me than life. As a bright gem set in the bosom of this glorious Union, Maryland has my strong and loyal affections. I have watched her prosperity with the fondest solicitude from my earliest life, and yet I say to you I love the Union more than Maryland. Book First Annual Report of the Bureau of Industrial Statistics of Maryland Classic Reprint

Download or read book First Annual Report of the Bureau of Industrial Statistics of Maryland Classic Reprint written by A. B. Howard and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Annual Report of the Bureau of Industrial Statistics of Maryland It is with a full knowledge of the responsibility attaching to the proper performance of my duties that I have undertaken the work of this office. I have not lightly, nor without a due conception of the importance of such a work in all of its bearings, entered upon any part of it. Fully persuaded that such an office as this can and should be made a most important adjunct to the State government, I shall faithfully endeavor during my administration of it to place it upon such a basis that there may be assured to the people of the State the valuable results which it is their right to expect and my duty to give them. Every public office is created for the people who support it; not to benefit the individual who may be selected to administer it. I shall know no other line of conduct than to adhere strictly to this policy, and if thus, happily, I merit the public confidence, the future usefulness of the office may with reasonable certainty be assured. If the central idea, steadily kept in view, is the subordination of all to the common welfare, the consequent attainment of the greatest possible good on the lines marked out is inevitable. He who adopts this as the guiding principle in the execution of any duty has learned well his first lesson and has gone far toward the accomplishment of the ends desired. But without proper support, no efforts, however well directed, can secure the maximum amount of good. My exertions to carry out the provisions of the law, though they be in good faith, must fail of results unless the proper assistance is given me by the State. Whatever measure of success, therefore, may eventually be reached by this Bureau must not be judged by the results of the first year's work. It is new, and from the very nature of things largely experimental. Its usefulness in the public estimate and its ability to serve the ends of its creation have yet to be demonstrated. It is not possible, nor must it be expected, that after one year of existence, even under conditions more than ordinarily favorable, a bureau of statistics can be made capable of perfect work. It is only by slow development, patient investigation and careful study of the questions involved that this is to be done. Years may be required, indeed will be, for the perfection of a system which is to be productive of lasting results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1687/8-1693 The present volume continues the Council records without a break, down to the outburst of that sedition, the result Of which was to take the government Of Maryland from the Proprietary and place it in the hands of the King.
