Book The Rise of Carry The Dangerous Consequences of Volatility Suppression and the New Financial Order of Decaying Growth and Recurring Crisis

Download or read book The Rise of Carry The Dangerous Consequences of Volatility Suppression and the New Financial Order of Decaying Growth and Recurring Crisis written by Tim Lee and published by McGraw Hill Professional. This book was released on 2019-12-13 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protect yourself from the next financial meltdown with this game-changing primer on financial markets, the economy—and the meteoric rise of carry. The financial shelves are filled with books that explain how popular carry trading has become in recent years. But none has revealed just how significant a role it plays in the global economy—until now. A groundbreaking book sure to leave its mark in the canon of investing literature, The Rise of Carry explains how carry trading has virtually shaped the global economic picture—one of decaying economic growth, recurring crises, wealth disparity, and, in too many places, social and political upheaval. The authors explain how carry trades work—particularly in the currency and stock markets—and provide a compelling case for how carry trades have come to dominate the entire global business cycle. They provide thorough analyses of critical but often overlooked topics and issues, including: •The active role stock prices play in causing recessions—as opposed to the common belief that recessions cause price crashes •The real driving force behind financial asset prices •The ways that carry, volatility selling, leverage, liquidity, and profitability affect the business cycle •How positive returns to carry over time are related to market volatility—and how central bank policies have supercharged these returns Simply put, carry trading is now the primary determinant of the global business cycle—a pattern of long, steady but unspectacular expansions punctuated by catastrophic crises. The Rise of Carry provides foundational knowledge and expert insights you need to protect yourself from what have come to be common market upheavals—as well as the next major crisis.

Book Leveraged Trading

Download or read book Leveraged Trading written by Robert Carver and published by Harriman House Limited. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the right broker, and just a few hundred dollars or pounds, anyone can become a leveraged trader. The products and tools needed are accessible to all: FX, a margin account, CFDs, spread-bets and futures. But this level playing field comes with great risks. Trading with leverage is inherently dangerous. With leverage, losses and costs – the two great killers for traders – are magnified. This does not mean leverage must be avoided altogether, but it does mean that it needs to be used safely. In Leveraged Trading, Robert Carver shows you how to do exactly that, by using a trading system. A trading system can be employed to tackle those twin dangers of serious losses and high costs. The trading systems introduced in this book are simple and carefully designed to use the correct amount of leverage and trade at a suitable frequency. Robert shows how to trade a simple Starter System on its own, on a single instrument and with a single rule for opening positions. He then moves on to show how the Starter System can be adapted, as you gain experience and confidence. The system can be diversified into multiple instruments and new trading rules can be added. For those who wish to go further still, advice on making more complex improvements is included: how to develop your own trading systems, and how to combine a system with your own human judgement, using an approach Robert calls Semi-Automatic Trading. For those trading with leverage, looking for a way to take a controlled approach and manage risk, a properly designed trading system is the answer. Pick up Leveraged Trading and learn how.

Book The Financing of Catastrophe Risk

Download or read book The Financing of Catastrophe Risk written by Kenneth A. Froot and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it possible that the insurance and reinsurance industries cannot handle a major catastrophe? Ten years ago, the notion that the overall cost of a single catastrophic event might exceed $10 billion was unthinkable. With ever increasing property-casualty risks and unabated growth in hazard-prone areas, insurers and reinsurers now envision the possibility of disaster losses of $50 to $100 billion in the United States. Against this backdrop, the capitalization of the insurance and reinsurance industries has become a crucial concern. While it remains unlikely that a single event might entirely bankrupt these industries, a big catastrophe could place firms under severe stress, jeopardizing both policy holders and investors and causing profound ripple effects throughout the U.S. economy. The Financing of Catastrophe Risk assembles an impressive roster of experts from academia and industry to explore the disturbing yet realistic assumption that a large catastrophic event is inevitable. The essays offer tangible means of both reassessing and raising the level of preparedness throughout the insurance and reinsurance industries.

Book Code Generation for Embedded Convex Optimization

Download or read book Code Generation for Embedded Convex Optimization written by Jacob Elliot Mattingley and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Convex optimization is widely used, in many fields, but is nearly always constrained to problems solved in a few minutes or seconds, and even then, nearly always with a human in the loop. The advent of parser-solvers has made convex optimization simpler and more accessible, and greatly increased the number of people using convex optimization. Most current applications, however, are for the design of systems or analysis of data. It is possible to use convex optimization for real-time or embedded applications, where the optimization solver is a part of a larger system. Here, the optimization algorithm must find solutions much faster than a generic solver, and often has a hard, real-time deadline. Use in embedded applications additionally means that the solver cannot fail, and must be robust even in the presence of relatively poor quality data. For ease of embedding, the solver should be simple, and have minimal dependencies on external libraries. Convex optimization has been successfully applied in such settings in the past. However, they have usually necessitated a custom, hand-written solver. This requires signficant time and expertise, and has been a major factor preventing the adoption of convex optimization in embedded applications. This work describes the implementation and use of a prototype code generator for convex optimization, CVXGEN, that creates high-speed solvers automatically. Using the principles of disciplined convex programming, CVXGEN allows the user to describe an optimization problem in a convenient, high-level language, then receive code for compilation into an extremely fast, robust, embeddable solver.

Book Stochastic Optimal Control of Structures

Download or read book Stochastic Optimal Control of Structures written by Yongbo Peng and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-27 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes, for the first time, a basic formulation for structural control that takes into account the stochastic dynamics induced by engineering excitations in the nature of non-stationary and non-Gaussian processes. Further, it establishes the theory of and methods for stochastic optimal control of randomly-excited engineering structures in the context of probability density evolution methods, such as physically-based stochastic optimal (PSO) control. By logically integrating randomness into control gain, the book helps readers design elegant control systems, mitigate risks in civil engineering structures, and avoid the dilemmas posed by the methods predominantly applied in current practice, such as deterministic control and classical linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control associated with nominal white noises.
