Download or read book Stained Glass Souls written by Donald Queen and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-07-14 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These scribbles have saved my sanity, if not my life. These meanderingswhich are fun, painful, and freeingwill be in five categories, though some could almost fit anywhere. It is a mix of my humor and anguish, which I often have to force out and, at other times, cant stop. This collection of words ranges from fear to love, from the creative process to nature and spirituality. These choices come from about a thirty-five-year span from the point of setting down the alcohol and drugs and trudging through years of anxiety and depression. Watch out for the second chapter, Mud, Molasses, and Stained-Glass Souls. This chapter shows my struggles to get past my self-centered fears. Dont linger in that mire. I almost didnt make it through the illusions. I just want to show that sometimes insanity and stupidity are on the same side of the path. If that crazy chapter is too dark, just run to the next one. I dont need to live in it anymore, though I dont want to forget where Ive come from. I just hope someone can find something in here to embrace or let go.

Download or read book Stories in Light written by Nancy Cavadini and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame contains one of the largest collections of late nineteenth-century French stained glass outside of France. The French Gothic-inspired church has forty-four large stained glass windows containing two hundred and twenty scenes. Today, more than 100,000 visitors tour the basilica each year to admire its architecture or participate in the beautiful liturgies. Honoring both the Sacred Heart and the Virgin Mary, the vibrant windows have, for more than a century, drawn visitors and worshippers alike into a conversation with the art and faith found in the windows. This informative and conveniently sized guidebook tells the unique story of the windows: the improbable creation of a glassworks by cloistered Carmelite nuns in LeMans, France, and their stained glass that so perfectly illuminated the late nineteenth-century French Catholic spirituality of the Congregation of Holy Cross, who established the University of Notre Dame. The words of Father Edward Sorin, CSC, founder of the university, are featured throughout the text. He saw the basilica and its windows as an avenue for teaching this spirituality. The book describes the windows according to their location in the building, from the narthex at the entrance to the Lady Chapel behind the altar. Full-color photographs provide a detailed view of the scenes found in each window. These photos are accompanied by informed commentary on the historical and theological importance of the windows, the iconography of featured saints, and how they illuminate the work of the Holy Cross to educate both mind and spirit. Stories in Light is an easy-to-read book written for all who visit the basilica, including faculty, students, alumni, and friends and family of Notre Dame, and for readers everywhere who want to know more about the rich history and heritage of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart's stained glass.
Download or read book National Soul written by Marylin J. McKay and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2002-05-13 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining their social, political, and economic contexts, McKay shows how the murals of this period glorified Canada as a modern nation state, extolled the virtues of commerce and industry, inculcated conventions of gender and race, and shared the intensity of nationalistic sentiment that led to the work of the more renowned painters of Toronto's Group of Seven. Bringing together for the first time a body of Canadian work - civic, commercial, religious, and private - that has been largely ignored by art historians, A National Soul challenges previous histories of Canadian painting. This generously illustrated book reproduces seldom-seen works from across the country, many of which have been moved or destroyed, and includes a comprehensive listing of all works from the period, their original and present locations, and their state of preservation.

This book was released on 2016-02-08 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the aesthetic, symbolic, and cultural concepts of radiance and beauty in stained glass in modern art; global exchanges between stained-glass artists in Europe and the Americas; and the transformation of stained glass from religious decoration to secular material culture. Unique features of the book include its geographic breadth, encompassing England, France, Italy, USA, and Mexico, and its inclusion of American female glassmakers. Essays consider how stained glass became an art form during this time, and show how the narrative for the figurative design drew from the Bible, mythology, history, literature, and the symbolism of the time, including popular culture such as ecology and materiality. Written for students and the general public interested in the humanities, literature, history, art history, and new media and popular culture, this book examines the visual beauty and symbolism of stained-glass windows in Europe and American cultures during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries – the modern era.
