Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, has been conducting staff rides since the 1900s. Captain Arthur L. Wagner was an instructor at Fort Leavenworth in the 1890s, and he believed an officer's education had become too far removed from the reality of war. He pondered how to get the experience of combat to officers who had only experienced peace. His answer was the staff ride, a program in which students studied a major battle and then went to the actual field to complete the study. Wagner did not live to see staff rides added to the curriculum at Fort Leavenworth but in 1906, the first staff ride was added to the Fort Leavenworth "experience." Major Eben Swift led 12 students on a study of the Atlanta Campaign of 1864. On and off, staff rides have been a part of the curriculum for over the last 100 years.The Staff Ride Handbook and Atlas for the Battle of White Bird Canyon, 17 June 1877 provides a systematic approach to the analysis of this opening battle of the Nez Perce War. A staff ride consists of three phases including the Preliminary Study Phase, the Field Study Phase, and the Integration Phase. Accordingly this staff ride handbook is divided into three parts. Part I provides instructions on how to conduct the "Preliminary Study Phase." This phase is conducted before the visit to the battlefield and prepares the students for the visit. Part II covers the "Field Study Phase." This phase is conducted on the battlefield and enables students to understand historical events through analysis of the actual terrain. Part III provides instruction on the "Integration Phase." No staff ride is complete without an integration phase because it is critical for the students to understand what happened, why it happened, and most importantly, what can be learned from the study of the battle or campaign.

Insignificant in terms of size, the Patriot victory at Kings Mountain upset the British attempts to gain permanent control of the Carolinas-and by extension fundamentally changed the course of the war in the South. The strategic and operational implications tied to the Kings Mountain battle will provide military professionals much to ponder about the nature of irregular conflict and counterinsurgency in the modern era. When viewed within the context of the British strategic goals for the Southern Campaign, the Patriot victory at Kings Mountain destroyed the British center of gravity, a well-organized Loyalist militia capable of securing South Carolina in the absence of British regulars. Not only did the disaster of Kings Mountain demoralize the surviving Loyalists, but it convinced the British ground commander, Lord Charles Cornwallis, to curtail attempts to recruit additional Loyalist militia regiments. Absent an effective Loyalist militia, the British did not have the manpower to both pacify South Carolina and continue the process of conquering the vast territory that lay between Charleston and the Chesapeake. Part I, Missouri's Divided Loyalties, and Part II, Missouri's Five Seasons, provide an overview of Missouri's history from the initial settlement of the Louisiana Purchase Territories through the opening years of the American Civil War. The remaining parts cover the Confederate plan, the Confederate movement into Missouri and the Union reaction, the Confederate retreat and Union pursuit into Kansas, and the final Confederate escape back into Arkansas. The atlas has a standard format with the map to left and the narrative to the right. Each narrative closes with two or more primary source vignettes. These vignettes provide an overview of the events shown on the map and discussed in the narrative from the perspective of persons who participated in the events. In most cases there are two vignettes with the first from a person loyal to the Union and the second from a person who supported the southern cause. A few narratives have two or more vignettes from only the Union side. This was done to emphasize disagreements and struggles among senior leaders to establish a common course of action. Map 25, Decision at the Little Blue River, is a good example and the three vignettes emphasize the disagreement between Maj. Gen. Samuel Curtis and his subordinate, Maj. Gen. James Blunt on where to locate the Union defensive line.
