Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stabilization of the Foreign Exchanges The upheavals of the recent European War caused fluctuations in the exchange market which have world-wide significance. The course of the market for foreign bills forms a problem of well-nigh insoluble complexity to experts and bankers, and of great importance to the trader, the merchant and the manufacturer, and also to legis lative bodies, public treasuries, and the general public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Exchange: Before, During, and After the War Looking at the situation statistically, a Frenchman who left £100 in an English bank at the outbreak of war, which cost him about francs, can now sell the money for about francs. An Englishman who had 100 dollars in New York at the outbreak of war now finds that the money is worth 486/344ths of what it was worth at the time of investment. One thousand English pounds bought Swiss francs on February 4, 1920, and bought more on November 17, 1920. So we might go on, but these illustrations will be enough. Putting it into terms of commodities, every time the dollar increases in value in terms of the pound, the price of bacon and wheat and lard from America will rise in price in shops here. Tea growers are cutting down their production, and rubber growers are doing likewise, not because rubber or tea are not desired, but because Central European countries have so little money that they cannot afford to buy the tea or the rubber. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Exchange This book deals, not with the subject of international trade in its entirety, but with the plans of payment and the methods, of banking and financing followed in that trade. It treats of foreign'exchange in the narrower, and at the same time, conventional, sense, as meaning the commercial paper of international trade, or the cheeks, drafts, and bills utilized therein. By means of these instruments, im porters and exporters manage, through the aid of the bank ers for foreign commerce, not only to settle their accounts, that is, to make and collect payments, but also to finance their shipments, which is something quite distinct. Stated briefly, the subjects of study in this volume are the methods or proceedings and the forms or documents of foreign-trade settlement, banking, and financing. Belonging with these, the international movement of gold and the measures taken to influence itare examined at length. The contemporary expansion of American foreign trade and the entry of American banks into the foreign field adds much to the importance of these matters with us today. Book Foreign Exchange

Download or read book Foreign Exchange written by Thomas York and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Exchange: Theory and Practice Foreign exchange is attracting more attention than any other branch of finance. The interest evinced is universal and is no longer confined to bankers, international traders, and financial writers, as was the case prior to the Great War. The general public is showing a decided disposition to acquaint itself with the dislocation of the exchanges brought about by the conflict. Nor is this interest likely to suffer much abatement, since normal conditions will probably not be restored in international financial relations for a number of years to come. The author's purpose in this book is to explain the operation of the exchanges between gold-standard countries under normal financial conditions. In a subsequent volume now in preparation he proposes to deal with the present irregular position of the exchanges, and with exchange between a gold- and a silver-standard country. It is quite impossible, however, to gain an adequate appreciation of the problem presented by the deranged condition of the exchanges unless their operation under the normal functioning of the commercial and financial machinery of the world is first thoroughly understood. The subject of foreign exchange, even in its greatest refinements, offers comparatively little difficulty after the student has once mastered the meaning of the gold standard, or what constitutes money in a gold-standard country. The present volume, therefore, attempts to give in the introductory chapter a complete understanding of this fundamental principle of all finance. A hypothetical method of treatment is followed in the theoretical part of the discussion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eastern Exchange, Currency and Finance This work has been written amidst many interruptions and distractions, but if it meet with the same kindly reception at the hands of the critics as that accorded to my previous book - Foreign Exchange and Foreign Bills - I shall feel more than satisfied. So far as I have been able to ascertain, there exists no treatise dealing entirely with the Eastern Exchanges; the present book is sent forth, therefore, in the hope that it may fill that gap in the literature of currency. Its preparation has called for a good deal of translation from foreign documents, and considerable searching into Government records, in which work I have been most ably assisted by representatives of the foreign governments concerned. My very sincere thanks in this respect are due to Their Excellencies the French Ambassador, the Minister for the Netherlands, the Persian Minister, the Siamese Minister; to Kengo Mori, Esq., Financial Commissioner to the Imperial Japanese Government; to Monsieur de la Chaume of the Commission de RavitailJement; and to the Consul-General for the United States of America. To the Managers of the Bank of Japan, the Banque de l'lndo-Chine, the Imperial Bank of Persia, the Java Bank, and the International Banking Corporation, I am indebted for a whole host of facts concerning operations which have come under their notice. Last, but not least, I owe a deep debt of gratitude to the Managers of the London Branch of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation for their valuable counsel and aid in the elucidation of the many difficult problems connected with the silver exchanges. Book Problems in Foreign Exchange Classic Reprint

Download or read book Problems in Foreign Exchange Classic Reprint written by Martin J. Shugrue and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in Foreign Exchange In assembling the material contained within these pages the essential purpose has been to present definitely and concisely in the form of specific problems the operations of foreign exchange. The writer believes that this work can be utilized most effectively when supplemented by other sources of information. In so far as the methods and practices are concerned, naturally, the most important of these sources is foreign-exchange traders or business men actually engaged in importing or exporting merchandise. Current periodicals, pamphlets, weekly letters, and similar publications afford invaluable aid in obtaining knowledge on the more fundamental and, at the same time, up-to-date aspects of international exchange. Among the more useful examples of this second source of information may be mentioned the Commercial and Financial Chronicle, Federal Reserve Bulletin, Financial Review, Economist (London), and publications of such banking institutions as the Guaranty Trust Company of New York, the National City Bank of New York, the National Shawmut Bank of Boston, the First National Bank of Boston, the Irving National Bank of New York, and the National Bank of Commerce in New York. Standard books furnish a third source of information. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Money Changing an Introduction to Foreign Exchange Classic Reprint

Download or read book Money Changing an Introduction to Foreign Exchange Classic Reprint written by Hartley Withers and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Money-Changing an Introduction to Foreign Exchange It seems at first sight that war, on its present scale, puts the laws of exchange in the dustbin. Rates have gone skyrocketing and diving with an almost indecent disregard for precedent, and the old "gold points" are a half-forgotten memory. And yet above the war flood which has drowned so many of the landmarks by which the students of exchange were taught to steer, there still rise, serene and stronger than ever, the pillars on which the chief laws of this science are engraved. The war has shown more clearly than ever that claims on account of goods, services, and securities (in the widest sense of the term) are the foundation on which rates of exchange are built, and that variations in the amount of these claims are the chief causes of the movements in these rates. The violence of these movements, under war conditions, makes their meaning all the plainer; and if the details of text-books are belied for the time being, that is only because the main principles that they set forth are now freed from many of the modifications which veil their working in time of peace. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Exchange and Foreign Bills in Theory and in Practice Exchange with the Silver-using countries of the East seems to be a general source of trouble to people dealing with those centres, and in deference to many requests, I have taken the opportunity to include one or two chapters on the Eastern exchanges, which I hope will serve to remove the difficulties which appear to surround this part of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Exchange: An Elementary Treatise Designed for the Use of the Banker, the Business Man and the Student This work is not' a text book on Foreign Ex change. It is an elementary treatise, explaining, in simple language, the essential principles of this science, the basis for and the methods of computa tion of pars of exchange, and how operations in ex change in their various forms are conducted. The expositions of the manner of ascertaining pars of exchange are one of the features of this work, which is almost entirely new in the sense that it has not before been so directly and clearly presented by any of the Cambists, or skilled writers on the science, Whose publications have hitherto been issued, with, perhaps, the sole exception of Norman, who sought to introduce a universal system of computations of exchange based upon fixed constants. Book Foreign Exchange

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Exchange: A Study of the Exchange Mechanism of Commerce This small volume, also published as Part I of my International Trade and Exchange, deals chiefly with the subject of Foreign Exchange, though it also contains two introductory chapters on Laws of Money and The Nature of Banking, which, in my judgment, make possible a clearer understanding of the economic theory of foreign exchange operations. In these and the following chapters, I have endeavored to analyze, more fully than is usually done, the interrelations of different persons, buyers and sellers, et al., in the credit mechanism of exchange, - to show who are the ultimate creditors when bank checks and bank notes are used in trade and when bills of exchange (especially "long bills") are used. Thus, after the explanation of the nature of banking, the reader is led, in Chapter III, The Nature and Method of Foreign Exchange, to an appreciation of the international nature of the credit relations growing out of trade. The flow of money from country to country having been explained briefly in Chapter I, the relation of this flow to the rate of exchange and to fluctuations in the rate of exchange is set forth at length in Chapter V.
