Book Stability Under Wind Load of Loose laid External Roof Insulation Boards

Download or read book Stability Under Wind Load of Loose laid External Roof Insulation Boards written by [Anonymus AC09041911] and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increased costs of energy has made the addition of thermal insulation to existing buildings an economic proposition. If the building has no cavity walls or loft space, it may be necessary to apply the insulation externally; many insulation systems have been developed to fill this role. On walls and steep roofs, these systems must be bonded or fixed mechanically to the existing structure. It may be difficult to achieve a satisfactory bond when a building is old and the finish of the external surface has deteriorated. If a fault occurs, for example if rainwater enters the structure, it may be difficult to determine whether this is a fault in the new insulation system or a pre-existing fault in the original structure. On flat or nearly flat roofs, an external insulation system may be loose-laid, relying on self-weight or ballast to provide stability against wind-induced uplift. Such systems are usually porous to rainwater and so require the existing structure to be water- tight. Because no fixings penetrate the existing structure, a loose-laid system has advantages to both client and supplier: faults can be readily ascribed to either the original structure or the insulation system and the insulation can be temporarily removed to effect repairs. This digest gives guidance on the uplift pressures to which loose-laid external roof insulation boards can be subjected, and how they can be restrained using ballast or mechanical fixing. A worked example is given to show how to determine the spacing and adequacy of ballast.
