Book Stability Properties of an Intense Relativistic Nonneutral Electron Ring in a Modified Betatron Accelerator

Download or read book Stability Properties of an Intense Relativistic Nonneutral Electron Ring in a Modified Betatron Accelerator written by Hans S. Uhm and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equilibrium and stability properties of an intense electron ring located at the midplane of an externally applied mirror field are investigated within the framework of the linearized Vlasov-Maxwell equations, including the important influence of equilibrium self fields and an applied field in the torodial direction. It is assumed that the ring is thin and that nu/gamma(sub b) “1, where nu is Budker's parameter and gamma(sub b)mc-squared is the characteristic electron energy. Equilibrium and stability properties are calculated for the choice of equilibrium distribution function in which all electrons have the same value of energy in a frame of reference rotating with angular velocity in the minor cross section of the ring, and a Lorentzian distribution in canonical angular momentum. Negative-mass and resistance-wall stability properties are calculated, and a closed dispersion relation is obtained for the case where the ring is located inside a toroidal conductor with finite resistivity and minor radius much less than the major radius. One of the most important features of the stability analysis is that the negative-mass instability in a high-current ring can be stabilized by equilibrium self-field effects in circumstances where the self fields are sufficiently intense. Moreover, a modest spread Delta in canonical angular momentum can stabilize the resistive-wall instability.

Download or read book Physics Of Nonneutral Plasmas written by Ronald C Davidson and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2001-10-22 with total page 755 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nonneutral plasma is a many-body collection of charged particles in which there is not overall charge neutrality. The diverse areas of application of nonneutral plasmas include: precision atomic clocks, trapping of antimatter plasmas and antihydrogen production, quantum computers, nonlinear vortex dynamics and fundamental transport processes in trapped nonneutral plasmas, strongly-coupled one-component plasmas and Coulomb crystals, coherent radiation generation in free electron devices, such as free electron lasers, magnetrons and cyclotron masers, and intense charged particle beam propagation in periodic focusing accelerators and transport systems, to mention a few examples. Physics of Nonneutral Plasmas is a graduate-level text — complete with 138 assigned problems and the results from several classic experiments — which covers a broad range of topics related to the fundamental properties of collective processes and nonlinear dynamics of one-component and multispecies charged particle systems in which there is not overall charge neutrality. The subject matter is treated systematically from first principles, using a unified theoretical approach, and the emphasis is on the development of basic concepts that illustrate the underlying physical processes in circumstances where intense self fields play a major role in determining the evolution of the system. The theoretical analysis includes the full influence of dc space charge effects on detailed equilibrium, stability and transport properties. The statistical models used to describe the properties of nonneutral plasmas are based on the nonlinear Vlasov-Maxwell equations, the macroscopic fluid-Maxwell equations, or the Klimontovich-Maxwell equations, as appropriate, and extensive use is made of theoretical techniques developed in the description of multispecies electrically-neutral plasmas, as well as established techniques in classical mechanics, electrodynamics and statistical physics.Physics of Nonneutral Plasmas emphasizes basic physics principles, and the thorough presentation style is intended to have a lasting appeal to graduate students and researchers alike. Because of the advanced theoretical techniques developed for describing one-component charged particle systems, this book serves as a useful companion volume to Physics of Intense Charged Particle Beams in High Energy Accelerators by Ronald C Davidson and Hong Qin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on High-Brightness Accelerators was held at the Atholl Palace Hotel, Pitlochry, Perthshire, Scotland, from July 13 through July 25, 1986. This publication is the Proceedings of the Institute. This ASI emphasized the basic physics and engineering of the rela tively new and fast-emerging field of high-brightness particle accelera tors. These machines are high- to very-high-current (amperes to hundreds of kiloamperes), modest-voltage (megavolt to tens of megavolts) devices, and as such are opposed to those historically used for high-energy physics studies (i.e., gigavolt and higher energies and rather low currents). The primary focus of the Institute was on the physics of the accelerator and the beam, including the dynamics, equilibria, and insta bilities of high-current beams near the space-charge limit; accelerator engineering techniques; and the applications of high-brightness beams in areas such as free-electron lasers, synchrotron-radiation sources, food processing, and heavy- and light-ion fusion. The Institute concentrated on bringing together several diverse but related communities which, we hope, benefited from this opportunity to interact: the North American activity in machine technology, engineer ing, and diagnostics with the strong European theoretical community; the basic beam physicists with the engineering technologists.

Book Longitudinal and Transverse Instabilities in a High Current Modified Betatron Electron Accelerator

Download or read book Longitudinal and Transverse Instabilities in a High Current Modified Betatron Electron Accelerator written by P. Sprangle and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we derive a general dispersion relation which describes the longitudinal and transverse instabilities on an intense non neutral electron beam in a modified betatron field configuration. In a modified betatron, the usual betatron fields are supplemented by a strong toroidal stabilizing magnetic field. The negative mass kink, longitudinal resistive wall and transverse resistive wall instabilities have been analyzed in the new field configuration for an intense, non neutral, confined electron ring. Our model includes self field effects as well as induced field effects due to the image charges and currents on the toroidal chamber walls. The electron ring, which is assumed to have an energy spread, is taken to be located near the center of a toroidal chamber of finite conductivity. All the instabilities examined here are shown to significantly reduced by the presence of the strong toroidal magnetic field. In the limit of low beam current and no toroidal magnetic field our results reduce to the usual expressions. We find an unstable hybrid mode of oscillation which is a coupled azimuthal and longitudinal mode and exists at beam energies below the transition energy. The negative mass kink instability associated with and ultra high current (approximately 10 kA) modified betatron electron accelerator is analyzed and evaluated in some detail. Growth rate curves are given for various ranges of system parameters, including electron beam energy spread. It is found that with a moderate energy spread on a 10 kA injected electron beam, the negative mass kink instability can be stabilized.
