Book Dimensions of Automobile Demand

Download or read book Dimensions of Automobile Demand written by David A. Hensher and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book is the first attempt to fully integrate automobile ownership (by fleet size and vehicle type) and vehicle use in an intertemporal setting which recognises the durable nature of automobiles using extensive longitudinal panel data on each household (over 5 years). The book presents: the theoretical and econometric development of a joint discrete-continuous choice longitudinal model system of household and automobile ownership and use, bringing together 9 years of research;the application of the model system for the period 1981-1985 in Australia;the forecasting of the model system up to 2020; particular emphasis on the development and application of a longitudinal data base which is unique to the topic - to capture the dynamic (intertemporal) impacts of technological change, life-style change, fuel prices etc. The book not only extends the reader's knowledge of the dimensions of automobile demand but it also adds important new ideas on handling dynamics of choice, as well as new empirical evidence on elasticities of demand for vehicles and vehicle kilometres. Energy and transport planning specialists will find the book essential reading.

Book Integrated Vehicle Stability Control and Power Distribution Using Model Predictive Control

Download or read book Integrated Vehicle Stability Control and Power Distribution Using Model Predictive Control written by Milad Jalaliyazdi and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing need for active safety systems to assist drivers in unfavorable driving conditions. In these conditions, the behavior of the vehicle is different than the linear response during everyday driving. Even experienced drivers usually lose control of the vehicle in such situations and that often results in a car accident. Stability control systems have been developed over the past few decades to assist drivers in keeping the vehicle under control. Most of these control systems are comprised of separate modules, each responsible for one task such as yaw rate tracking, sideslip control, traction control or power distribution. These objectives may be in conflict in some driving situations. In such cases, individual controllers fight over priority and produce conflicting control commands, to the detriment of the vehicle performance. In addition, in most stability control systems, transferring the controller from one vehicle to another with a different driveline and actuator configuration requires significant modifications in the controller and major re-tuning to obtain a similar performance. This is a major disadvantage for auto companies and increases the controller design and tuning costs. In this thesis, an integrated control system has been designed to address vehicle stability, traction control and power distribution objectives at the same time. The proposed controller casts all of these objectives in a single objective function and chooses control actions to optimize this objective function. Therefore, the output of the integrated controller is not altered by another module and the optimality of the solution is not compromised. Furthermore, the designed controller can be easily reconfigured to work with various driveline configurations such as all-wheel drive, front or rear-wheel drive. In addition, it can also work with various actuator configurations such as torque vectoring, differential braking or any combination of them on the front or rear axles. Moving from one configuration to another does not change the stability control performance and major re-tuning can be avoided. The performance of the designed model predictive controller is evaluated in software simulations with a high fidelity model of an electric Equinox vehicle. The stability and wheel slip control performance of the controller is evaluated in various driving and road conditions. In addition, the effect of integrated power distribution is studied. Experimental tests with two different electric vehicles are also carried out to evaluate the real-time performance of the MPC controller. It is observed that the controller is able to maintain vehicle and wheel stability in all of the driving scenarios considered. The power distribution system is able to improve vehicle efficiency by approximately 1.5% and acts in cooperation with the stability control objectives.

Book Towards an Integrated Approach to Measurement Analysis and Modeling of Cortical Networks

Download or read book Towards an Integrated Approach to Measurement Analysis and Modeling of Cortical Networks written by A. Ravishankar Rao and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The amount of data being produced by neuroscientists is increasing rapidly, driven by advances in neuroimaging and recording techniques spanning multiple scales of resolution. The availability of such data poses significant challenges for their processing and interpretation. To gain a deeper understanding of the surrounding issues, the Editors of this e-Book reached out to an interdisciplinary community, and formed the Cortical Networks Working Group, and the genesis of this e-Book thus began with the formation of this Working Group, which was supported by the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis in the USA. The Group consisted of scientists from neuroscience, physics, psychology and computer science, and meetings were held in person. (A detailed list of the group members is presented in the Editorial that follows.) At the time we started, in 2010, the term “big data” was hardly in existence, though the volume of data we were handling would certainly have qualified. Furthermore, there was significant interest in harnessing the power of supercomputers to perform large scale neuronal simulations, and in creating specialized hardware to mimic neural function. We realized that the various disciplines represented in our Group could and should work together to accelerate progress in Neuroscience. We searched for common threads that could define the foundation for an integrated approach to solve important problems in the field. We adopted a network-centric perspective to address these challenges, as the data are derived from structures that are themselves network-like. We proposed three inter-twined threads, consisting of measurement of neural activity, analysis of network structures deduced from this activity, and modeling of network function, leading to theoretical insights. This approach formed the foundation of our initial call for papers. When we issued the call for papers, we were not sure how many papers would fall into each of these threads. We were pleased that we found significant interest in each thread, and the number of submissions exceeded our expectations. This is an indication that the field of neuroscience is ripe for the type of integration and interchange that we had anticipated. We first published a special topics issue after we received a sufficient number of submissions. This is now being converted to an e-book to strengthen the coherence of its contributions. One of the strong themes emerging in this e-book is that network-based measures capture better the dynamics of brain processes, and provide features with greater discriminative power than point-based measures. Another theme is the importance of network oscillations and synchrony. Current research is shedding light on the principles that govern the establishment and maintenance of network oscillation states. These principles could explain why there is impaired synchronization between different brain areas in schizophrenics and Parkinson’s patients. Such research could ultimately provide the foundation for an understanding of other psychiatric and neurodegenerative conditions. The chapters in this book cover these three main threads related to cortical networks. Some authors have combined two or more threads within a single chapter. We expect the availability of related work appearing in a single e-book to help our readers see the connection between different research efforts, and spur further insights and research.

Book Aircraft Dynamic Stability and Response

Download or read book Aircraft Dynamic Stability and Response written by A. W. Babister and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aircraft Dynamic Stability and Response deals with the fundamentals of dynamic stability in aircraft. Topics covered include flight dynamics, equations of motion, and lateral and longitudinal aerodynamic derivatives. Basic lateral and longitudinal motions are also considered. A non-dimensional system of notation is used, and problems are included at the end of chapters. This book is comprised of 13 chapters and begins with an introduction to aircraft static stability and maneuverability, with emphasis on the theoretical basis of flight dynamics and the technical terms used. The physical background for the estimation of aerodynamic derivatives is discussed. Subsequent chapters focus on the longitudinal and lateral motion of aircraft, including the effect of automatic control; modern developments such as the effects of aeroelasticity, dynamic coupling, and high incidence; and aircraft response to gusts. The final chapter demonstrates how to estimate the aerodynamic derivatives, and hence the dynamic stability characteristics, of a typical fighter aircraft. Throughout the text, the aircraft and its behavior are kept well to the fore. This monograph is intended for undergraduate students of aeronautical engineering and for newcomers to the aircraft industry.
