Book The Spiritual Journey of St Patrick

Download or read book The Spiritual Journey of St Patrick written by Aidan Larkin and published by Messenger Publications. This book was released on 2023-02-27 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year millions of people celebrate St Patrick. He is Ireland’s most famous ambassador. Yet, what do we really know about him, about his spirituality, his mission, his vocation? Can we really only say that he was no friend to snakes? Few people know that Patrick’s own writings have survived to the present day. Fewer still understand the connection between Patrick and the Church Fathers. Ironically, it is perhaps his universal popularity and connection to generations of Irish immigrants that has set him apart from his peers and obscured his very real contribution to the Church. To the broader world he is more famous than Augustine and more recognisable than Paul, but unlike them his writings and spirituality have been neglected. In The Spiritual Journey of St Patrick, Aidan Larkin SCC brings the academic rediscovery of Patrick to a lay audience, passionately arguing the case for recognising and engaging with Patrick’s spiritual legacy to the Church. Uncovering the wealth of references to the Fathers of the Church in Patrick’s own writings, Larkin encourages us to reframe Patrick as a religious thinker in dialogue with the Church’s past and future. Patrick’s vocation him brought him to the Irish, and the Irish brought him to the world. Now The Spiritual Journey of St Patrick retells that great story in the history of Christianity in a way that restores Patrick’s own voice so that he can speak to us and guide us in this synodal moment in the life of the Church.

Book Who was Saint Patrick

Download or read book Who was Saint Patrick written by E. A. Thompson and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1999 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those who want to know what manner of man Patrick was, something about the Roman world in which he originated, and the problems he faced among the Irish will find this book helpful and satisfactory. Patrick is allowed to emerge from his own accounts. And what an impressive figure he was! TABLET Thompson has presented Patrician scholars with some intriguing new hypotheses in a field where hypotheses abound. These have the virtue of relying solely on the only reliable source bearing on Patrick, namely his own writings. HISTORY Everyone knows of St Patrick, but what do we know about him? Simply that it was he who 'converted the Irish to Christianity'. The strange fact is that for two hundred years or so after his death, although his name was remembered with respect, everything else about him was forgotten. E.A. Thompson pieces together the story of his life, drawing his evidence from the only real clues that exist, Patrick's own writings, not from the later Lives. He reveals him as coming from a well-to-do nominally Christian family in Britain, being captured by Irish raiders and forced into slavery in Co Mayo, converting to a most earnest Christianity, and eventually escaping from Ireland to the fulfilment of his calling. As a bishop, he is shown to have been a man of profound originality, and his writings -- his Confession and his Letter to Coroticus -- further display his character. It is no surprise that a host of legends became attached to his name, and the biography is completed with a look at some of those early legends.

Book Saint Patrick

Download or read book Saint Patrick written by Jonathan Rogers and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2010-02-06 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this Christian Encounter Series biography, author Jonathan Rogers explores the life of Saint Patrick: slave, shepherd, and courageous missionary. Patrick was born the son of privilege and position, but he was only a teenager when he was taken from his home in Roman Britain by marauders and sold into slavery in Ireland. Despite his terrible circumstances, young Patrick did not give way to despair. As he worked as a shepherd in the pastures of his new owner, he kindled the faith he’d inherited from his family and eventually escaped to freedom. Then, after returning home, he experienced a dream that changed everything: God wanted him to go back and take the Gospel to the country of his captors. Patrick heeded the call. Both humble enough to minister to beggars and bold enough to confront kings, Patrick led the Irish through his brave and compassionate service into the Christian faith and baptized thousands. Separating the many myths from the facts, Jonathan Rogers weaves a wonder-filled tale of courage, barbarism, betrayal, and hope in God’s unceasing faithfulness. Countless miracles have been attributed to Saint Patrick, but perhaps one of the simplest and most amazing is that he won the hearts and souls of the same fierce and indomitable people who had enslaved him.
