Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Nicholas; An Illustrated Magazine, Vol. 22: For Young Folks Inside, the floor was made of bright, red tiles, and just opposite the door was the hearth, with the fireplace, huge and set with blue tiles; and over the fire of peat hung a large iron pot on a crane; and from the pot, which had a shiny brass rim, came a most appetizing sputtering and bubbling sound. On one side of the room, and almost filling it, was a large mahogany double-decked bed, built into the wall, like a closet, with doors which were to be closed tightly to keep out the draughts at night - such a queer bed, with bright tulips painted in staring colors all over it. Arranged in a line on the wall were a num ber of old Delft plates and pitchers and mugs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Nicholas, Vol. 22: An Illustrated Magazine for Young Folks On a certain June morning in the year 1806, when the sunshine flooded all things, and every nightingale in France seemed practising for the post of court singer, a boy lay at the foot of one of the great chestnuts in the park of St. Cloud. He was small, disreputable-looking, and dilapidated, - a tramp, and a ragged little tramp at that; but his eye was bright and snappy; his tangled hair, crowned with the wreck of a red liberty-cap, was thick and golden; and his face, though it bore the stamp of poverty as it bore its crust of grime, had that careless, happy-go-lucky air that marks the street-boy of any great city. His restless eyes took in everything the noble park had to offer. He was evidently on the lookout for some place or some person. But, tired with his ten-mile tramp, and overpowered by the glorious solitude of all out-of-doors - burdened, also, with the weight of the important secret that had led him so far from his dingy home in the narrow Street of the Washerwomen, he had flung himself down at the foot of the great chestnut to talk it all over with himself for want of a listening comrade. "My faith!" he said, as he closed one eye and squinted the other along the fat tree-trunk, and into the over-arching branches, "but this is n't the Court of the Miracles now, nor yet the Street of the Washerwomen, is it? What big trees! What a lot of room! Lonesome, though, I think, when the night comes down; even the Street of the Washerwomen would be better than this, for there are plenty of people there, - more than a plenty sometimes, especially when that pig of a Pierre comes shoving across the street to tease Babette and set my two fists a-going! But I like people. There's more to see in a crowd of people than in a crowd of trees - more to do, too. But here's where the Little Corporal's big house is, somewhere among these trees. I wonder where? I saw a pile of buildings on the hill farther along, as I came up here. Perhaps I can find the Emperor there. I must; I must n't say what I came for to any one else. I wonder how one talks to an emperor? Must I say 'Citizen Emperor, ' or 'Citizen Little Corporal, ' or 'Citizen' what? I must find out before I get up to his house. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Nicholas, Vol. 15: An Illustrated Magazine for Young Folks; Part I, November, 1887, to April, 1888 In the Department or the Meuse, in northwestern France, is the little farming village of Damvillers, a mere handful of cottages dropped in the inside of rolling plains which are dotted with vineyards and ruled off by straight rows of slender poplars. The well in the village square is the morning meeting-place of women who clatter over live stones in their wooden shoes to fill their water pails. Presently you may see the men leaving their cottage doors on their way to work among the vines or in the potato-fields outside the village. Between their fields and their cottages they spend their lives. These peasants do not go away from home. They care most for the prospects of their crops. Their only time of merrymaking is the village fete. They arc interested in what they can see, and understand, and handle. But, strangely enough, among them grew up a peasant, one of themselves, whose eyes were keen enough to see that this out-of-door life was beautiful; that these figures laboring in the fields were endowed with a nobility of their own, and that the orchards and vineyards and grassy pastures of Damvillers were pictures in themselves. I suppose that no other of the peasants ever thought whether their life was beautiful or not. They were obliged to work hard, and when the work was done, they were hungry and tired, and that was all. Now. this young peasant, who was never so hungry or tired as to forget the beauty of the scenes around him. lived exactly like the others. He was born, it is now thirty-seven years since, in a little stone cottage with an odd thatched roof, which stands at the corner of the village square. There are only four rooms in this cottage, and of these rooms the pleasantest was the large kitchen where his father and grandfather used to sit before a great open fire-place in which hung a generous put filled with bubbling for an few, or the "soup of black beans," for which his mother was famous, jules Bastsen, the father, had been a cooper. making casks for the wine from the vineyards, but by and by he saved money enough to buy a vineyard for himself. Grandfather Lepage. too. was of a thrifty disposition, and flora the earnings of his hard work he had saved a little sum of which he made good use. as we shall see. Behind the cottage and the barn was a delightful garden, where the young Jules and his brother Emile used to play among rows of hollyhocks and poppies, and under the shade of some old apple-trees. Many years afterward this playground became famous, as I shall tell you. As the peasant bay Jules grew up. his mornings were no longer spent in play, but he trudged off after his father to work among the vines. Every one worked at Damvillers. and to Jules Bostien saw about him every day the men and women moving up and down the rows of vines, bending over the lulls of potatoes, spreading hay in the fields or resling at noon, and the boys and girls tending the cows in the pastures. There was a sensitive brain behind his eyes, and something there was touched by these things. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. And every spring I watch the nest-building from my window with great satisfaction. O'b. Stockton, Cal. Dear St. Nicholas: I am ever so glad that you printed my letter, and the picture of my house, in the January number of the St. Nicholas, and I write this to tell you my thanks. On New Year's day my friend Fannie and I received calls at my house; we had sixteen callers. We gave ihem coffee, candy, popcorn, macaroons, raisins, oranges and apples. We had a real nice time.--Your friend, Nellie Littlehalk. To C. Lindslev, Jr.--An article about the house-fly will appear in St. Nicholas before very long, and when it does, you will be able to find in it the answer to your question. The illustrated article about " Litde Housemaids" in this number of St. Nicholas was prepared after repeated visits to the so-called Kitchen-Garden classes of New York both by the author and the artist. We think all our boys and girls--and their parents, too--will be entertained by the account of this novel school; and we shall be glad if some of our older readers are prompted to take a practical interest in similar work. Every class of twenty-four scholars at the Kitchen-Garden has four teachers, and a dozen or more classes in New York alone are taught by about fifty volunteers, who have been trained by Miss Huntington herself. There is plenty of room for more schools, and it is a good work for young girls to do, if they have leisure time and fit qualifications at command. The position of servant-girl becomes a grade of honor when once its duties are faithfully learned and cheerfully performed, and it is delightful to think of poor little street waifs being thus led to know the dignity of household service, and helped to enjoy its...

As the child grew up he developed into a bright, quick, active boy; and at no little sacrifice, for money was not plenty in his home, he was sent to a good school and afterward to college, from which he graduated at the age of Sixteen years. With no social position and without friends in high places to help him, this boy nevertheless came to be one of the most famous men of his time, and to-day he is honored, famous, prosperous, and rich. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Nicholas, Vol. 48: An Illustrated Magazine for Boys and Girls; Part II., May to October, 1921 NE fine lay morning about seventy years 7 ago a little French boot-black was standing at the entrance of the Pont Neuf, one of the finest of the many bridges that cross the Seine between the two great divisions of Paris. The boy was watching for customers. But there was none to be had yet, for it was too early. At length, finding nothing else to do, he took a piece Of Chalk from the one untorn pocket that he possessed and began to sketch a face upon the stone parapet Of the bridge. A strange face it was, very broad across the jaws. And narrowing as it sloped upward, so that. With its curious Shape and the pointed tuft of hair that stood up from the high. Narrow forehead. It looked at a little distance like an enormous pear. But it was plain that this was the likeness of some real man, and that the boy was immensely amused at it, for he chuckled to himself all the time he was working, and more than once laughed out right. So intent was he on his picture, which was now nearly finished. As to be unconscious that some one else was much interested in it. Too.
