Book St Lawrence County in the War of 1812

Download or read book St Lawrence County in the War of 1812 written by John M. Austin and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-10 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fledgling United States struggled to keep its freedom from Great Britain during the War of 1812, but St. Lawrence County in upstate New York played a divided role. The region shared a border--as well as close personal and business associations--with British Canada and opposed the American embargo that disrupted these relationships. While some St. Lawrence men fought bravely for America, smuggling was a common way of life. Several small battles and skirmishes took place along the river, and a local merchant even influenced President Madison's decision-making. Local historian John Austin recounts these and other events, as well as the fascinating North Country characters who influenced them, in this book on St. Lawrence County in the War of 1812.

Book excerpt: Since the days of the pioneers, St. Lawrence County's diverse waterways, fertile soils, and dense forests have drawn a rich cultural mix of peoples. These early settlers built the colorful barns, mills, and lighthouses of a working community. Over time, the area was transformed by one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, the St. Lawrence Seaway; by the great educational institutions of the valley; and by modern industries like Corning, the high-tech creator of windows for the space shuttle.St. Lawrence County is bracketed by two great vacation meccas, the Thousand Islands and the Adirondack Park. Artist Frederick Remington's island retreat at Ingleneuk and Henry Rushton's Canton boat works are no longer with us, but the port of Ogdensburg still boasts elegant nineteenth-century homes. Rushton's crafts can still be found at exhibitions at Paul Smith's College or gracing Lake Flower in the village of Saranac Lake. Daily life in hamlets such as Star Lake, North Creek, and Blue Mountain Lake can still evoke a simpler time.

Book A History of St Lawrence and Franklin Counties New York

Download or read book A History of St Lawrence and Franklin Counties New York written by Franklin Benjamin Hough and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of St. Lawrence and Franklin Counties, New York: From the Earliest Period to the Present Time In tracing the birth and infancy of our settlements, through the weakj ness, and perhaps the waywardness of inexperienced youth, up to the maturity of manhood, it has been our uniform desire to render impartial justice to the merits of those to whom belongs the credit of having met and overcome the difficulties of a new country, and through along course of years, with hope deferred, have waited and labored for the accomplish ment of those objects which were calculated to secure a lasting benefit to the country. About 1818, the first attempt was made to establish the dairy interest, a branch of agriculture which will, to a considerable de gree, supersede every other, as the broken nature of the surface, in towns underlaid by primary rock, renders pasturage the most profitable use to which much of the land can be applied. The direct access to the mar kets, at all, times, \which is now enjoyed, enables the farmer to avail him self of the calls of the market, and derive every advantage that has hitherto been felt only by those living in the vicinity of large cities. Al though butter and cheese are required for consumption by millions, yet but a comparatively small part' of our dcountry is capable of producing them. The country that yields these articles is mainly limited to the northern border of the Union; the climate of the central and southern portions not being adapted to the purpose. This species of husbandry likewise possesses the elements of perpetuity within itself, from the very small amount of the produce of fields that are taken away. Of other sources of wealth our counties possess an enviable Share, when these resources come to be known and appreciated, they can not but be im proved. The great and increasing amount of freight bus1ness done on the Northern railroad, and the corresponding addition to the commerce of the river and lakes to meet this road, bear evidence that the public are beginning to realize the advantages of the communication, and to reap the benefits to be derived from it.
