Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: River Country is the name given to St. Joseph County, Michigan, an area of historic small towns including Three Rivers, Mendon, Centreville, Constantine, Sturgis, and Nottawa. Home to one of the largest Amish populations in the state, it is a place of meandering roads often frequented by horse-driven black buggies. The countys towns, many of which are on the Michigan and National Registers of Historic Places, feature architecture that harkens back to the 1800s with styles ranging from Italianate and Greek Revival to Queen Anne and Colonial. This book chronicles River Countrys historic development, with insight into the businesses, personalities, activities, and architecture that have contributed to its remarkable charm and character.

Book Hidden History of St Joseph County Michigan

Download or read book Hidden History of St Joseph County Michigan written by Kelly Pucci and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017-04-03 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michigan established St. Joseph County in 1829. It was a fertile land with an abundance of fresh water supplied by the St. Joseph River. The county's colorful past is the result of forgotten locals and visitors. Hezekiah Thomas fished for diamonds in Corey Lake. Saloon smasher Carrie Nation sold miniature hatchets at the county fairgrounds. The United States Congress recognizes the village of Colon as the Magic Capital of the World, and Lakeside Cemetery is the final resting place of more magicians than any other cemetery on the globe. Author and historian Kelly Pucci digs into the entertaining and often overlooked history of St. Joseph County.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern St. Joseph County is rich in tradition and history. Attracted to its fertile land, pioneer farmers first flocked to this area in the early 1830s. With mills powered by the small Potato Creek dotting the landscape and the introduction of the railroad to these rural parts, the towns of Lakeville, North Liberty, and Walkerton saw their genesis. A humble, yet hardworking way of life was established in those early days, and it still exists to this day. With over 200 vintage images, Southern St. Joseph County captures the day-to-day life of the individuals that helped shape over 170 years of history. With an emphasis on family, farming, and small-town tradition, these pages exemplify what it means to be a Hoosier and what it takes to make a rural community thrive for generations.

This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preserving the legacy of one of the twentieth century’s most influential advocates for peace and justice, The Papers of Martin Luther King, Jr., is described by one historian as being the "equivalent to a conversation" with King. To Save the Soul of America, the seventh volume of the anticipated fourteen-volume edition, provides an unprecedented glimpse into King’s early relationship with President John F. Kennedy and his efforts to remain relevant in a protest movement growing increasingly massive and militant. Following Kennedy’s inauguration in January 1961, King’s high expectations for the new administration gave way to disappointment as the president hesitated to commit to comprehensive civil rights legislation. As the initial Freedom Ride catapulted King into the national spotlight in May, tensions with student activists affiliated with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) were exacerbated after King refused to participate in subsequent freedom rides. These tensions became more evident after King accepted an invitation in December 1961 to help the SNCC-supported Albany Movement in southwest Georgia. King’s arrests in Albany prompted widespread national press coverage for the protests there, but he left with minimal tangible gains. During 1962 King worked diligently to improve the effectiveness of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) by hiring new staff and initiating grassroots outreach. King also increased his influence by undertaking an overcrowded schedule of appearances, teaching a course at Morehouse College, and participating in an additional round of protests in Albany during July 1962. As King confronted these difficult challenges, he learned valuable lessons that would later impact his efforts to desegregate Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963.
