Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians of all denominations are looking today to the ancient discipline of a rule of life to strengthen their sense of living in Christ and participating in a wider community. For the first time the brothers of the Society of Saint John the Evangelist are making their rule—completely rewritten and revised—available to the church at large. The book is composed of 49 short chapters that develop classical monastic themes of hospitality, poverty, celibacy, and obedience, exploring what these might mean to men and women living at the end of the millennium. And because this is a modern rule, it provides guidance and reflection in less traditional areas, too—leadership, conflict, the use and abuse of authority, work, the need for rest and silence, vocation, and fellowship with the poor. Therefore it has much to teach Christians in other kinds of communities, including the family, the parish, and the workplace. Concluding chapters give suggestions for meditating on the Rule and for its use as an aid to discernment and spiritual growth for prayer groups and parish life committees.

This book was released on 2016-01-25 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. John the Evangelist Parish history begins as a small Catholic settlement on the banks of Sunfish Creek in Edmonson County, Kentucky. The pioneer settlers came from Madison County, Kentucky in 1825. Their cabins were built in close proximity for defense against marauding Indians. The settlement became known as Sunfish Station. Priests were scarce on the Kentucky frontier. The visits of a circuit-riding pioneer priests were infrequent, with Mass being offered in someone's home. It was not uncommon for a Catholic to go months between these visits. When the Rev. Father Degauquier took charge of the station at Sunfish there were only 14 to receive Communion. The first visit, in 1828, by Bishop Benedict Joseph Flaget recorded 83 to receive Communion. Sunfish Station grew in number through the years but did not attract a resident pastor until the 1940's, when the Glenmary Home Missioners assumed responsibility for the parish. Till then it was a "Mission" parish served by the pastors of St. Augustine at Clarkson, Holy Spirit at Bowling Green and St. Joseph at Leitchfield. Follow the timeline of the pioneer priests, the visiting pastors and the resident pastors that served the parish through the years... the pioneer settlers, the parishioners... the Church, the School and the Sisters who taught there.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you believe it's possible to be happier than you have ever been before? Not for fleeting moments, but consistently? Bestselling author Matthew Kelly believes it is possible-and in his latest book, The Biggest Lie, he explains how. We all want to be happy and live life to the fullest, but the answer isn't found in the world's definition of happiness. Modern culture is constantly feeding us lies, and these lies affect you more than you know. The lies that affect you the most, however, are the ones you tell yourself. These lies steal your joy, sap your energy, and cause you to lose hope. They prevent you from discovering the kind of vibrant faith the first Christians experienced. But as Matthew Kelly shows, we've arrived at a crucial moment in history. People are disillusioned with what the world offers. The world is in desperate need of change, and no one is in a better position to effect that change than Christians. We have an incredible opportunity to dispel the lies and cut through the confusion and false promises around us. This book provides the practical tools necessary to help you regain your fervor and leave your mark on the world-and experience more happiness than you thought possible. Together we can change the course of history-with humility, generosity, kindness, and joy, one Holy Moment at a time.
