Book Witness to Hope

Download or read book Witness to Hope written by George Weigel and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 1228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This definitive biography of Pope John Paul II explores his historic influence on the world stage: “Magnificent. A tremendous achievement” (Washington Post). As head of the Catholic Church from 1978 until his death in 2005, John Paul II was one of the world’s most transformational figures. With unprecedented cooperation from the Pope, as well as the people who knew and worked with him throughout his life, George Weigel offers a groundbreaking portrait of him as a man, a thinker, and a leader whose religious convictions defined a new approach to world politics—and changed the course of history. The Pope played a crucial yet underexplored role in some of the most momentous events of his time, including the collapse of European communism, the quest for peace in the Middle East, and the democratic transformation of Latin America. With an updated preface, this edition of Witness to Hope explains how this “man from a far country” did all of that, and much more—and what both his accomplishments and the unfinished business of his pontificate mean for the future of the Church and the world.

And it is a gurglingly delightful compendium of - quite simply - delicious ideas and stories' Nigella Lawson 'An unutterable joy from the team behind one of the most influential and important restaurants in Britain ... Book excerpt: The 25th Anniversary edition of St. John People is as diverse and interesting as the rainbow-hued Virgin Island residents that populate it's 290 pages--from Pappy Sewer to Elvis Yearwood and Guy Benjamin; from Ethel McCully to Cid Hamling and Ernest Matthias; from Andromeada Childs to Herman Sprauve, Gerda Marsh, and Herman Prince. What does St. John have to do with the birth of the Atomic Bomb? Read Nancy Gibney's enthralling profile of local lay-about Robert Oppenheimer to find out. Who was John Anderson and why did he write the Night of the Silent Drum? Ruth Lowe, author of "St. John Backtime", will tell you. What caused a young senator-to-be Theovald Moorehead to request a discharge from his Naval career, rush back to St. John, and begin his fight against the National Park's plan to 'relocate' the local population to Green Valley (Fish Bay)? Local journalist Amy Roberts will be happy to inform you. Why was the original title of the most famous book ever written about St. John--"I Did it with Donkeys"--rejected by its New York publisher? When was Coral Bay the 'big city' on St. John? Which St. John artist/craftsperson has a piece in the Smithsonian Collection? How did Kitty Oppenheimer's sailboat end up in Panama? What happened in 1733? What's the local legend about those red rocks on Mary's Point? What local sailing inkslinger drove the POTUS crazy by sailing back and forth in front of Caneel Bay with "While Nixon Lazes, Indochina Blazes" painted on his gaff-rigged sails? Interested in artists? Les Anderson and Karen Samuel couldn't be stylistically more different--and yet both couldn't be more passionate about their love of this tiny island and its smiling people. Are you wondering about the different writing styles of such local literary talents as Amy Roberts, Dana Harrison, Shurna Rabsatt, Lito Valls, Lynda Lohr, Susan Barry, Doris Jadan, Gilbert Sprauve, Erva Denham, Guy Benjamin, and/or Cap'n Fatty? Russian opera singers? Freedom riders? Crazy sea gypsies? Vogue magazine? Who was the Bionic Creole? What professor with a doctorate in linguistics from Princeton speaks fluent French and was bahn here? What's the connection between the East End and Walt Disney's "Fantasia"? Whose 'Backyard' was it? What famous St. Johnian vowed she'd never be a waitress nor a secretary--then fell in love with Love City so much she did one for years in order to afford a lifetime of the other? It's all in the newly updated St. John People--a 'must-read' for local folks, long term residents, and short-term visitors alike.

Book Patricia St John Tells Her Own Story

Download or read book Patricia St John Tells Her Own Story written by Patricia St. John and published by Kingsley Press. This book was released on 2004-08 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone who has read Patricia St. John's books already knows how her stories come alive, and this account of her own life is no exception. Her powers of description make the story leap from the page and the reader is transported to far off places and times; and the people and the things she describes can almost be touched, smelled and seen.Patricia was not just a gifted story-teller, though; she was also a deeply committed follower of the Lord Jesus Christ, whose spiritual journey began when she was only six years old. 'My name is Patricia, ' she prayed, 'and if You are really calling me I want to come and be Yours. ' Out of that small beginning there issued a river of life and light and blessing that went on increasing right up to the end of her life. Although she always thought of herself as 'an ordinary sort of girl' , her life was extraordinary because of her supreme love for Jesus Christ. The life portrayed here is not that of the self-conscious saint, concerned only with her own saintliness. On the contrary these pages offer us an inside view of someone utterly human, prone to mistakes and failures like the rest of us, yet suffused with the love of God and a contagious joy and peace that was like the bubbling up of a perpetual fountain.

Book Self Exposure

Download or read book Self Exposure written by Charles L. Ponce de Leon and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2003-10-15 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few features of contemporary American culture are as widely lamented as the public's obsession with celebrity--and the trivializing effect this obsession has on what appears as news. Nevertheless, America's "culture of celebrity" remains misunderstood, particularly when critics discuss its historical roots. In this pathbreaking book, Charles Ponce de Leon provides a new interpretation of the emergence of celebrity. Focusing on the development of human-interest journalism about prominent public figures, he illuminates the ways in which new forms of press coverage gradually undermined the belief that famous people were "great," instead encouraging the public to regard them as complex, interesting, even flawed individuals and offering readers seemingly intimate glimpses of the "real" selves that were presumed to lie behind the calculated, self-promotional fronts that celebrities displayed in public. But human-interest journalism about celebrities did more than simply offer celebrities a new means of gaining publicity or provide readers with the "inside dope," says Ponce de Leon. In chapters devoted to celebrities from the realms of business, politics, entertainment, and sports, he shows how authors of celebrity journalism used their writings to weigh in on subjects as wide-ranging as social class, race relations, gender roles, democracy, political reform, self-expression, material success, competition, and the work ethic, offering the public a new lens through which to view these issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wherever they settled, immigrants from Ireland and their descendants shaped and reshaped their understanding of being Irish in response to circumstances in both the old and new worlds. In A Land of Dreams, Patrick Mannion analyzes and compares the evolution of Irish identity in three communities on the prow of northeastern North America: St John’s, Newfoundland, Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Portland, Maine, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These three port cities, home to diverse Irish populations in different stages of development and in different national contexts, provide a fascinating setting for a study of intergenerational ethnicity. Mannion traces how Irishness could, at certain points, form the basis of a strong, cohesive identity among Catholics of Irish descent, while at other times it faded into the background. Although there was a consistent, often romantic gaze across the Atlantic to the old land, many of the organizations that helped mediate large-scale public engagement with the affairs of Ireland – especially Irish nationalist associations – spread from further west on the North American mainland. Irish ethnicity did not, therefore, develop in isolation, but rather as a result of a complex interplay of local, regional, national, and transnational networks. This volume shows that despite a growing generational distance, Ireland remained “a land of dreams” for many immigrants and their descendants. They were connected to a transnational Irish diaspora well into the twentieth century.
