Book Life of St Dominic

Download or read book Life of St Dominic written by Bede Jarrett and published by Image. This book was released on 1995-03-01 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Life of St. Dominic, Father Bede Jarrett, one of the truly eminent Dominicans of our century, presents a portrait of St. Dominic and his times with a brilliance and clarity that result from a perfect understanding of the beloved saint and his ideals. St. Dominic was plunged accidentally -- and, as it turned out, providentially -- from a quiet choir stall and scholarly life to the active and contentious life of a street-corner preacher. Called upon to dispute with heretics who threatened the very existence of the thirteenth-century Church, he found the vital inspiration of his life to lie in personal austerity, holiness, and ardent dedication of the intellect to Christ. He not only defended the truth of the faith, but through the Order he founded (the Dominicans) he spread the faith throughout existing Christendom. Austere and joyous, physically hardy, affectionate, compassionate, and full of a lively gaiety of heart, St. Dominic was ideally suited to be a brilliant preacher. He was well-educated, trained expertly to argument, and had that flaming Spanish enthusiasm and radiant character that immediately attracted eager followers to his Order. Father Jarrett's Life of St. Dominic is by far the best English biography of St. Dominic and brings him and his Order -- one of the richest ornaments of the Church and of the entire intellectual world -- to vibrant life for the modern reader.

Book Bede on the Tabernacle

Download or read book Bede on the Tabernacle written by Beda (Heiliger) and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the first English translation of Bede's allegorical commentary on the tabernacle of Moses, which he interpreted as a symbolic figure of the Christian Church. Written in the early 720s at the monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow in Northumbria, On the Tabernacle (De tabernaculo) was the first Christian literary work devoted entirely to this topic and the first verse-by-verse commentary on the relevant portions of the Book of Exodus. On the Tabernacle was one of Bede's most popular works, appearing in a great many manuscripts from every period of the Middle Ages.

Book Bede The Reckoning of Time

    Book Details:
  • Author : Beda (Venerabilis.)
  • Publisher : Liverpool University Press
  • Release : 1999-01-01
  • ISBN : 0853236933
  • Pages : 585 pages

Download or read book Bede The Reckoning of Time written by Beda (Venerabilis.) and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the patristic age until the Gregorian calendar reform of 1582, computus -- the science of time reckoning and art of calendar construction -- was a matter of intense concern. Bede's The Reckoning of Time (De temporum ratione) was the first comprehensive treatise on this subject and the model and reference for all subsequent teaching discussion and criticism of the Christian calendar. It is a systematic exposition of the Julian solar calendar and the Paschal table of Dionysius Exiguus, with their related formulae for calculating dates. But it is more than a technical handbook. Bede sets calendar lore within a broad scientific framework and a coherent Christian concept of time, and incorporates themes as diverse as the theory of tides and the doctrine of the millennium. This translation of the full text of The Reckoning of Time includes an extensive historical introduction and a chapter-by-chapter commentary. It will interest historians of medieval science, theology, and education, Bede scholars and Anglo-Saxonists, liturgists, and Church historians. It will also serve as an accessible introduction to computus itself. Generations of medieval computists nourished their expertise in Bede's orderly presentation; modern scholars in quest of safe passage through this complex terrain can hope for no better guide.

Book The English Way Studies In English Sanctity From St Bede To Newman

Download or read book The English Way Studies In English Sanctity From St Bede To Newman written by Various and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book does not attempt to analyse the English Way of being Catholic, but to present certain characters, certain ideas, from which the reader may make his own analysis and paint his own picture. The various writers have chosen characters who in their opinion are very English and very Catholic. There have been two sharp breaks in the national life—the first was at the Norman Conquest; the second was at the Reformation, when the national and religious life ceased to flow in the same full stream. But something remained unchanged right through. Phrases from Mr. Chesterton’s study of Alfred the Great would find themselves at home in the study of Challoner: “supremely the type that proves to the world what is called a fanatical fixity of faith without fanaticism . . . in which solitary and supernatural conviction expresses itself in energy but not often in ecstasy”: “There is always something about him indescribably humble and handy, like one who unpretentiously hammers away at an inherited task.” “What we call England,” says Mr. Belloc, “was made, grew from, began, upon a Sussex hill in 1066. Not that the blood which we call English began then and (God knows) not the landscape nor the deep things which inhabit the native soul. All these are immemorial; the English imagination, the English humour, the English Englishry is from the beginning of recorded time.” Those “deep things which inhabit the native soul” make in each land its own special “Way” of being Catholic.

Book The Age of Bede

Download or read book The Age of Bede written by Saint Bede (the Venerable) and published by Penguin Classics. This book was released on 1983 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains Bede's Life of Cuthbert and Lives of the Abbots of Wearmouth and Jarrow; Eddiuss's Life of Wilfrid; and the Voyage of St. Brendan. They are all set in the sixth and seventh centuries--a period which witnessed the clash between Roman episcopal orthodoxy and the democratic monasticism that was spreading over Ireland and Northern England. Brendan's whimsical travelogue shows us Celtic monasticism before it was challenged; Bede describes its canalization into missionary activity by Cuthbert at Lindisfarne; and Eddius tells of Wilfrid's enforcement of decisions made by the Synod of Whitby. The individual character of each of these three classics of the early Church is clearly preserved in J.F. Webb's translation.

Book Parish the Thought

Download or read book Parish the Thought written by John Bernard Ruane and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-08-16 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a warm and affectionate narrative that "transports readers back to a time before cable television, cell phones, and the Internet" (Atlanta Journal-Constitution), John Bernard Ruane paints a marvelous portrait of his Irish-Catholic boyhood on the southwest side of Chicago in the 1960s. Capturing all the details that perfectly evoke those bygone days for Catholics and baby boomers everywhere, Ruane recounts his formative years donning the navy-and-plaid school uniform of St. Bede's: the priests and nuns; bullies, best friends, and first loves; and most memorable teachers -- including the miniskirted blonde who inspired lust among the fifth-grade boys but was fired for protesting the Vietnam War. Here are stories from the heart of his hardworking, blue-collar family: the good times and bad; sibling rivalries; summers by the lake; delivering newspapers in the frigid Chicago winter; the fire that destroyed the family home; and the loss of their beloved mother to cancer. And here are priceless accounts of Ruane's days as an altar boy: from an embarrassing bell-ringing mishap, to serving a strict pastor who built a magnificent church but couldn't inspire Christian spirit, to the Heaven-sent guitar-playing priest who turned worship around for a generation of youth.
