The contributors demonstrate a balance between current fieldwork and careful archival analysis, as they build on the voluminous materials that are a legacy of the scholarship of such major figures as Boas, Barbeau, Tate, and Garfield. "This is the first book to explore the photographic imagery of the Tlingit during a critical period of change, from the 1860s through the 1920s. It also provides the first full treatment of the Tlingit photography of Elbridge W. Merrill, a neglected figure in the history of ethnographic photography." "The author has included 129 rare photographic images, a map, bibliography, and index."--BOOK JACKET.
Download or read book Alaska Basketry written by Violet Virginia Cavana and published by . This book was released on 1917 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Details the basketry and and baskets produced by the Athapascan, Haida, Aleutian, Tlinget, Eskimo & Kuskukwim Native American tribes in Alaska. The baskets described in this work were all drawn from Ms. Cavana's collection which she had acquired while living in Alaska from 1897-1903. Of particular interest are the photographs which appear to be a Kallitype process, in which a translucent paper was soaked with iron ammonium citrate, citric acid, and silver nitrate, and then placed on top of a glass plate negative of the author's baskets emulsion side up, and then removed from the photo printing frame, washed, fixed and then hand-coloured.
