Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER Named a Best Book of 2021 by Newsweek, the San Francisco Chronicle, The Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times “A glorious book—an assured novel that’s gorgeously told.” —The New York Times Book Review “An incredibly moving epic about an unforgettable family.” —CBS Sunday Morning “[An] absorbing novel…I felt both grateful to have known these people and bereft at the prospect of leaving them behind.” —The Washington Post A stunning novel about love, work, and marriage that asks how far one family and one community will go to protect their future. Colleen and Rich Gundersen are raising their young son, Chub, on the rugged California coast. It’s 1977, and life in this Pacific Northwest logging town isn’t what it used to be. For generations, the community has lived and breathed timber; now that way of life is threatened. Colleen is an amateur midwife. Rich is a tree-topper. It’s a dangerous job that requires him to scale trees hundreds of feet tall—a job that both his father and grandfather died doing. Colleen and Rich want a better life for their son—and they take steps to assure their future. Rich secretly spends their savings on a swath of ancient redwoods. But when Colleen, grieving the loss of a recent pregnancy and desperate to have a second child, challenges the logging company’s use of the herbicides she believes are responsible for the many miscarriages in the community, Colleen and Rich find themselves on opposite sides of a budding conflict. As tensions in the town rise, they threaten the very thing the Gundersens are trying to protect: their family. Told in prose as clear as a spring-fed creek, Damnation Spring is an intimate, compassionate portrait of a family whose bonds are tested and a community clinging to a vanishing way of life. An extraordinary story of the transcendent, enduring power of love—between husband and wife, mother and child, and longtime neighbors. An essential novel for our times.

Book excerpt: 'So that was all it took,' I thought. 'That was all it took for me to feel like I had all the power in the world. One morning, one moment, one yellow-haired boy. It wasn't so much after all.' Chrissie knows how to steal sweets from the shop without getting caught, the best hiding place for hide-and-seek, the perfect wall for handstands. Now she has a new secret. It gives her a fizzing, sherbet feeling in her belly. She doesn't get to feel power like this at home, where food is scarce and attention scarcer. Fifteen years later, Julia is trying to mother her five-year-old daughter, Molly. She is always worried - about affording food and school shoes, about what the other mothers think of her. Most of all she worries that the social services are about to take Molly away. That's when the phone calls begin, which Julia is too afraid to answer, because it's clear the caller knows the truth about what happened all those years ago. And it's time to face the truth- is forgiveness and redemption ever possible for someone who has killed?

Book Tracing Global Democracy

Download or read book Tracing Global Democracy written by Vladimir Biti and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focused on the recently hotly debated topic at the crossroads of various human and social sciences, this book investigates the emergence of the cosmopolitan idea of literature and its impact on the reconfiguration of the European and non-European political spaces. The birthplace of this idea is its designers’ traumatic experience as induced by the disconcerting condition of their abode. The thesis is that the eighteenth and nineteenth century’s cosmopolitan projects that grow out of such deep frustrations trace the twentieth century’s global democracy. This hidden origin of cosmopolitan projects dismantles the usual European representation of modernization as universal progress as myopic. Rather than being a generous action of prominent subjects such as Voltaire, Kant, and Goethe, or Bakhtin, Derrida and Deleuze, cosmopolitanism is an enforced reaction of the instances dispossessed by injury that search for the ways of healing it. Yet as soon as their remedy establishes itself as the ground for universal reconciliation, it risks suppressing other’s trauma, i.e. turns from politics into a police. Articulating the author’s position in the recent debates on the structure of democracy, the epilogue suggests an alternative strategy.

Book The Mississippi River and Its Source

Download or read book The Mississippi River and Its Source written by Jacob Vradenberg Brower and published by . This book was released on 1893 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the Collections of the Minnesota Historical Society is devoted to a historical discussion by Jacob Vredenberg Brower (1844-1905) about the source and headwaters of the Mississippi River, combined with his extensive hydrographic and topographic surveys. Brower summarizes the major European and white American exploratory trips to the area. Based on a scientific survey of the Itasca Basin that he made under the authority of the Minnesota Historical Society, Brower concludes that the true source of the Mississippi is neither Itasca Lake nor Elk Lake, nor even the stream discovered by Jean N. Nicolet (1836) called "Nicolet's Infant Mississippi River," but the "Greater Ultimate Reservoir" which receives its water supply from aerial precipitation and stores it in various component lakes and springs. Some of these lakes include Hernando de Soto, the Triplets, Whipple, Morrison, and Floating Moss; the streams that proceed from them include the beginnings of the Nicolet as well as the Mississippi. From Nicolet's middle lake the main river proceeds "in an unbroken channel" to the Gulf. After lobbying successfully to have this headwater region preserved as Itasca State Park (1891), Brower served as its first commissioner. The appendix includes an historical account of how the Mississippi and the Lake of the Woods came to form part of the northwestern boundary of the United States. Its author was Albert James Hill (1823-1895), who was also instrumental in the creation of Brower's report.

Book The Forth Dimension

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ron Forth
  • Publisher : FriesenPress
  • Release : 2024-05-10
  • ISBN : 1039188745
  • Pages : 191 pages

Download or read book The Forth Dimension written by Ron Forth and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2024-05-10 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mainstream physics currently contends that only 4% of our Universe is made of normal matter and energy. The remaining 96% is thought to be mysterious dark matter and dark energy that are not at all understood. This presents a quandary relative to Einstein’s observation: “The most incomprehensible thing about the world is that it is comprehensible.” Using judicious analogies, dry humor, and the established laws of physics, Ron Forth presents a new cosmological paradigm, honouring the principles of classical physics and relativity while examining the astronomical observations and ensuing inferences from a fresh perspective. Beginning by replacing curved spacetime with contoured four-dimensional space-energy, a new theory of gravity is developed. Using logical and mathematical arguments, he explains how forces, inertia, and entropy arise within this framework. Topics including black holes, gravitational waves, unification of the four fundamental forces, and the probabilistic nature of quantum mechanics are touched upon in the context of the model. He shines a light on dark matter and dark energy, potentially dispelling their shadows. A possible ultimate fate of the Universe, a topic of interest to most of its inhabitants, is proposed. Covering the life of the Universe in a compact book, The Forth Dimension may prove revolutionary – or not - but it will hopefully provoke further discussion of our understanding of the Universe. The objective is for professional scientists to consider the implications of the philosophy, hypotheses, and analysis presented. Various tests are proposed to experimentally determine whether the ideas are science or science fiction.
