Book Marital Satisfaction and Personality

Download or read book Marital Satisfaction and Personality written by Nivla Y. Fitzpatrick and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined marital satisfaction and its relationship to the similarity in personality traits between spouses. Participants completed a self-report questionnaire on attitudes, traits, preferences and skills in order to explore the following hypotheses. When spouses are similar on basic traits of personality, does it make for a happier marriage? Are persons more focused on interior or social qualities of a mate when selecting their spouse? Does this selection strategy make for a happier marriage? Does a person's own trait of spirituality indicate a focus on interior qualities for mate selection? The results of this study showed that similarity in the areas of spirituality, openness, and agreeableness had predictive power for relationship to marital adjustment across both genders. Additionally, similarity in conscientiousness predicted marital satisfaction for men and similarity in neuroticism predicted marital satisfaction for women.

Book Identity and Intimacy in Marriage

Download or read book Identity and Intimacy in Marriage written by Susan Krauss Whitbourne and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the research on which this book reports, we have been given the unique opportunity to explore the complex nature of two of the most important issues in the lives of adults: identity and intimacy. It is with deep gratitude that we give credit to the 80 individuals in our sample who allowed us to explore these processes in their lives. Our purpose in writing this book was, in some ways, a modest one. Both of us believed that research on the Eriksonian concept of intimacy was deficient in that it was limited to the reports of individuals about them selves. We maintained that this kind of research could provide only a narrow, and probably biased, view of the intimacy development of individ uals. By obtaining complementary responses to the intimacy interview from both partners in a marital relationship, we hope to pave a new path that fu ture researchers in this area will follow. Beyond this methodological advance, we intended that this book's theoretical focus could put a new perspective on the well-trodden path of research on marriage. This more ambitious gaal is one that we faced with some trepidation. The literature on marital adjustment and satisfaction is vast and potentially overwhelming.

This book was released on 2022-09-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction Marriage is one of the vigorously researched topics for last many decades. It is important because it is directly associated with the survival of human race. That is why marriage is a top most concern for the society. To tie in a knot is quite easy but it's difficult to and maintains a healthy and satisfaction relationship with the partner. This topic covers marital adjustment, maladjustment, marital satisfaction and dissatisfaction. So, many disciplines like sociology, psychology, home science and education are involved in finding out various constructs of marital satisfaction. Definition of Marriage Rosen-Grandon et al., (2004) has outlined, "marriage has been delineated as one of the most vital and essential human relationships. It provides the advantage of child rearing for the next generation and form the primary structure for establishing a family relationship". Sexton (1992) outlined, "Marriage as a legal term describing bound relationship regarding people so as to meet three differing kinds of needs: emotional, sexual and psychological". Glenn and Weaver (1979) outlined, "Marriage is found to be one in all the strongest correlates of happiness and well being". Argyle and Furnham (1983) outlined, "Marriage is that the greatest supply of social support for many individuals quite friends or together with emotional and married support and companionship". 18 Kennedy, Glares, and Glaser et al. (1990) defined for those who are married, the spouse is involved in and instrumental in a wide range of other satisfaction including sex and leisure. Being in love is the greatest source of positive emotion. Marriage is a very important from health point of view, as it results in better health behavior. Married people drink and smoke less have a better diet and do what the doctor orders. Marital satisfaction Marital satisfaction is linked to the happiness of the partners which is shared with, resolution of conflict and emotional support. Further, one can say that, it is one of the most important features which lead to the overall satisfaction in marital life of the person (Fowers & Olson, 1993, Argyle & Furnham, 1983). It reflects the suitable advantages and outlay of benefits in marriage to a particular person. Similarly, if one perceives greater benefits of marriage, one can achieve greater and more satisfying with in marital life and with the partner (Stone & Shackelford, 2007). The marital relationship is one of the most significant and unique relation among all human relationships. It is not only a mere convention, but also an implicit condition in all human society. The relationship between husband and wife is a very specific context and involves a complex process of adjustment. Thus, one can say that satisfaction with one's marriage is an important component of well-being (Byadgi, 2011). Definition of marital satisfaction Bhar and Leigh (1978) defined, "marital satisfaction as subjective evaluation of the overall quality of marriage. It is a degree to which the needs, desires and expectations are met in,

Book Parental Relationships Mate Selection and Marital Adjustment

Download or read book Parental Relationships Mate Selection and Marital Adjustment written by Vicki Lee Nelson and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to investigate perceived parental relationships and their correlation to mate selection. The secondary purpose was to investigate the agreement (1) between the husband's perception of the wife and her perception of herself and (2) between the wife's perception of the husband and his perception of himself (hereafter, perceptual agreement) in relation to marital adjustment. Sixty couples with one or both partners attending Utah State University of Logan, Utah, participated in the study. The following instruments were administered to all individuals: A brief biographical questionnaire containing items regarding sex, student-non-student status, occupation, education, number of months married, and religion; The Locke-Wallace Short Marital Adjustment Scale; and The Interpersonal Check List in which each person was to describe himself (herself), the mate, mother, and father. A number of hypotheses were made regarding positive and negative relationships with parents and their possible relationships to mate selectio nand subsequent marital happiness. For some of these hypotheses correlations were computed for self/spouse, perception of spouse/spouse, self/mother, self/father, self/spouse's mother, and self/spouse's father with regard to each of the 16 individual diagnostic categories and the two overall adaptive and maladaptive response scores from the ICL For one hypothesis, discrepancy scores with regard to perceptual accuracy with one's mate were calculated for the two overall categories of the ICL. These scores were then correlated with his or her respective marital adjustment score as measured by The Locke-Wallace Short Marital Adjustment Scale. It was found that with either adaptive or maladaptive parental (mother and/or father) relationships, one's spouse tends to be similar to his or her own parents. In addition, significant trends were noted concerning perceptions of the mate and self-perceptions with regard to parental relations. It was evident that there is a sex difference with regard to the effect of one's parental relationships. It was also apparent that parental relationships may have a more profound impact upon the female than upon the male, since more significant relationships at the .01 and .05 levels were evident for females. Concerning adaptive similarities for the wife's parents and her mate (self description), significant positive relationships were found in the overall category for the mother (.01) and for the father (.05). No significant relationships were evident for the husband with regard to adaptive parental relations and his mate. As for the overall maladaptive characteristics, a significant positive relationship was found for the wife's father and mate (.01) and also for the husband's father and mate (.05). With reference to the perception of the spouse, several significant relationships can be noted. For the female, there is a tendency to perceive her mate as being similar to her father in adaptive qualities; while for the maladaptive areas, the female tends to perceive her mate as being similar to her mother. As for the male, he tends to perceive his mate as being similar to his mother in both adaptive and maladaptive areas. With relation to self perception and parental figures, the female tends to perceive herself to be like her mother and father equally in adaptive areas but in the maladaptive areas, she perceives herself to be more like her mother. As for the male, he tends to see himself as being more similar to his mother in adaptive qualities and to his father in maladaptive characteristics. As for perceptual agreement, the data disclose that wives and husbands have similar perceptual accuracy, but especially with adaptive qualities . On the other hand, it was revealed that perceptual agreement is positively related to marital adjustment but specifically related to the perceptual accuracy of the maladaptive characteristics. In addition, it appears that if one spouse is satisfied (dissatisfied), the mate will also tend to be satisfied (dissatisfied). Other characteristic trends of interpersonal relations were evident from the plethora of data available and were discussed.
