Book The Analysis of Sports Forecasting

Download or read book The Analysis of Sports Forecasting written by William S. Mallios and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the magnitude of currency speculation and sports gambling, it is surprising that the literature contains mostly negative forecasting results. Majority opinion still holds that short term fluctuations in financial markets follow random walk. In this non-random walk through financial and sports gambling markets, parallels are drawn between modeling short term currency movements and modeling outcomes of athletic encounters. The forecasting concepts and methodologies are identical; only the variables change names. If, in fact, these markets are driven by mechanisms of non-random walk, there must be some explanation for the negative forecasting results. The Analysis of Sports Forecasting: Modeling Parallels Between Sports Gambling and Financial Markets examines this issue.

Book Relocating Teams and Expanding Leagues in Professional Sports

This book was released on 1999-08-30 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the business of professional league sports, market conditions are the key determinate of the financial success or failure of a team. In the last few years, major league sports has experienced both growth into new markets and relocations of existing teams. Owners and the leagues use demographics, economic data, and governmental support to decide on where and when to expand and relocate. This book examines the sports business from 1950 through 2000. Historical demographic, economic, and team-related data provide the context. The authors apply metropolitan area statistics such as population growth and income, game attendance, and estimated market values to examine the business decisions made by individual teams in professional baseball, football, and basketball. The book looks at specific teams in terms of their long-term viability as a franchise and ranks their performances in economic and business terms. It also examines the related issues of taxpayer subsidies for new venues and the economic impact of professional sports on cities and regions. The book is a fascinating and comprehensive look at the business of sports and its place in American society, business, and economics.

Book Media Coverage of Mega Sports Events and Investor Stock Categorization

Download or read book Media Coverage of Mega Sports Events and Investor Stock Categorization written by Patricia Dechow and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We investigate whether media coverage of mega-sports events can have spill-over effects in the stock market. Specifically, we focus on the Olympics and we analyze whether the media attention and hype surrounding the Olympics encourages investors to use the Olympics as a way to classify stocks for investment. We examine two Olympic hosting countries: China (2008) and the UK (2012) and identify stocks that media outlets list as either directly or indirectly involved in the Olympics (Olympic stocks). These stocks come from a broad range of industries and vary considerably in the level and timing of their involvement in the Olympics. We find that in both countries, Olympic stocks exhibit increases in comovement of returns after the announcement of the winning bid and declines in comovements after the games are played. However, Olympic stocks do not have superior financial performance and their fundamentals (earnings and cash flows) do not exhibit strong co-movement over the Olympic time period. This evidence suggests that the changes in return comovement are not driven by underlying fundamentals. Our evidence instead suggests that the combination of media attention and a mega-sports event can lead to transitory and sentiment-driven stock categorization.

Book Trading Bases

Download or read book Trading Bases written by Joe Peta and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ex–Wall Street trader improved on Moneyball’s famed sabermetrics and beat the Vegas odds with his own betting methods. Here is the story of how Joe Peta turned fantasy baseball into a dream come true. Joe Peta turned his back on his Wall Street trading career to pursue an ingenious—and incredibly risky—dream. He would apply his risk-analysis skills to Major League Baseball, and treat the sport like the S&P 500. In Trading Bases, Peta takes us on his journey from the ballpark in San Francisco to the trading floors and baseball bars of New York and the sportsbooks of Las Vegas, telling the story of how he created a baseball “hedge fund” with an astounding 41 percent return in his first year. And he explains the unique methods he developed. Along the way, Peta provides insight into the Wall Street crisis he managed to escape: the fragility of the midnineties investment model; the disgraced former CEO of Lehman Brothers, who recruited Peta; and the high-adrenaline atmosphere where million-dollar sports-betting pools were common.
