Book The Sports and Pastimes of American Boys

Download or read book The Sports and Pastimes of American Boys written by Henry Chadwick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sports and Pastimes of American Boys: A Guide and d104-Book of Games of the Play-Ground, the Parlor, and the Field, Adapted Especially for American Youth OW that the spirit of the age favors the plan of a judicious combination of physical recreation with mental culture, it is timely to prepare a text-book of sports and pastimes for boys, which will best tend to promote this system of paying due attention to physical as well as mental education. An old writer says, Let me make the songs of a people, and I care not who makes their laws. This rule is as applicable to the structure of the sports of a people as it is to the com position of their songs. The pastimes of boys of all nations partake largely of the peculiar character of the people whose youth engage in them. The boys of a war like nation find their chief recreation in sports in which feats of brutal courage, and of endurance of fatigue and pain, are marked characteristics. On the other hand, the youths of a peaceful people enjoy those pastimes best which most com pare in their character with the national life of their progenitors. Differences in climate necessarily have their relation to the character of national sports but it is more in the essential character of the people themselves that their national pastimes differ, and this is especially noticeable in the receative sports of boys. It is in this respect that the games of American boyhood are different, as a rule, from those of English youths. Of course, there is a certain degree of similarity in most of them, arising from their English origin but there is scarcely an imported game that is at all open to improvement, which has not of late years been essentially Americanized witness the evolution of our manly national game of base-ball from the old English schoolboy game of Rounders. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The astonishing novel and “tour de force” about a love affair in postwar France from the iconic author of All That Is (The New York Times Book Review). Twenty-year-old Yale dropout Phillip Dean is traveling Europe aimlessly in a borrowed car with little money. When he stops for a few days in a church-quiet town near Dijon, he meets Anne-Marie Costallat, a young shop assistant. The two begin an affair both carnal and innocent, and she quickly becomes to him the real France, its beating heart and an object of pure longing. James Salter, author of Light Years and the memoir Burning the Days, was an essential voice in the evolution of late twentieth-century prose, a stylist on par with Updike and Roth who won the PEN/Faulkner Award for his collection Dusk and Other Stories. One of the first great American novels to speak frankly of human desire free of guilt and shame, A Sport and a Pastime inspired Reynolds Price to call it “as nearly perfect as any American fiction I know.” This ebook edition features an illustrated biography of James Salter including rare photos from the author’s personal collection.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1868 edition. Excerpt: ... ON HUNTING. CHAPTER I. Our friend in the preceding papers has declared, in speaking of the Turf, that horse-racing might be regarded as the great national pastime of England, -- more especially even than fox-hunting or cricket. Now that we are going to say a few words about hunting, we are almost disposed to protest that, on this point, our friend is wrong. We doubt whether, of all our national amusements, hunting is not the most thoroughly English, and the least susceptible of being taken out of England. Of course we here include Scotland and the sister isle. As regards Ireland, we may go further, and almost express a doubt whether hunting is not more Irish than English, so thoroughly has life in that country, both rural life and town life, become imbued with a love of the sport. Horse-racing has indeed become so large a business, that it must be acknowledged to involve greater interests in a pecuniary point of view, and to be on that account the more important occupation of the two. It is, moreover, open to all the public. Our great racecourses are as common to rich and poor as are the Queen's highways. But nevertheless we think that hunting has more national efficacy than any other of our pastimes;--that it does more to make Englishmen what they are, and to keep them as they are, extending its influences to very many of both sexes who do not hunt themselves; and we are quite sure that there is no other national amusement among ourselves, no national amusement belonging to any other people, so incapable of exportation, so alien to foreign habits, so completely the growth of the peculiarities of the people with whom it has originated, as is the sport of hunting. Even among the nations who are nearest to us and dearest to us, --those.
