Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy has been both a driving force behind human civilizations and the source of so many conflicts and wars around the world. Today, it remains a major element which guides both economic and political decisions. Yet despite its huge influence on human life, energy remains an immense subject which is, in many ways, a purely abstract one to most of us; after all, nobody has actually seen what a kilowatt-hour looks like (though we may have seen what its output can do in the form of the appliances it powers). This book is designed to provide readers with a general understanding of energy. No background in related fields in higher education are needed. It explores the topic by beginning with what 'energy' means and where it comes from; the different forms of energy we currently known and when they were discovered; as well as the innovative breakthroughs and historical milestones which followed their discovery. It then expounds on how each newly discovered form of energy with the use of increased scientific and engineering knowhow needed for these discoveries, and their impacts that have powered our evolution of human civilizations, before arriving at the central concern of the 21st century: how long will humanity's access to energy last?

Book excerpt: Places That Count offers professionals within the field of cultural resource management (CRM) valuable practical advice on dealing with traditional cultural properties (TCPs). Responsible for coining the term to describe places of community-based cultural importance, Thomas King now revisits this subject to instruct readers in TCP site identification, documentation, and management. With more than 30 years of experience at working with communities on such sites, he identifies common issues of contention and methods of resolving them through consultation and other means. Through the extensive use of examples, from urban ghettos to Polynesian ponds to Mount Shasta, TCPs are shown not to be limited simply to American Indian burial and religious sites, but include a wide array of valued locations and landscapes-the United States and worldwide. This is a must-read for anyone involved in historical preservation, cultural resource management, or community development.

Book Revival Bergson and His Philosophy 1920

Download or read book Revival Bergson and His Philosophy 1920 written by J. Alexander Gunn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stir caused in the civilised world by the writings of Bergson, particularly during the past decade, is evidenced by the volume of the stream of exposition and comment which has flowed and is still flowing. If the French were to be tempted to set up, after the German manner, a Bergson-Archiv they would be in no embarrassment for material, as the Appendix to this book – limited though it wisely is – will show. Mr. Gunn, undaunted by all this, makes a further, useful contribution in his unassuming but workmanlike and well-documented account of the ideas of the distinguished French thinker. It is designed to serve as an introduction to Bergson’s philosophy for those who are making their first approach to it, and as such it can be commended.

Book Boost your Heart Energy

Download or read book Boost your Heart Energy written by Nathalie Campeau and published by Rebiere. This book was released on with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Your heart is a source of energyDid you know that your heart, not your brain, is the organ of your body that produces most energy? As measured by an EKG, the electrical courant which it produces is 50 times stronger than that of the brain. This electromagnetic field can be detected up to 15 feet away from the body. Consequently, our inner cardiac energy can influence others: parents holding a baby in their arms will surround this baby with their loving energy. So will embraced lovers. Moreover, people at small distance will affect each other's field and influence the conversation's tone.Beyond its fundamental importance in culture as well as literature, your heart is much more than a pump that produces blood circulation. It has many complex functions, as it acts as:an endocrine gland that produces hormones,a sophisticated nervous system,an electricity generator.Indeed, we can talk about a "little brain" in your chest that gathers information, communicates and has its own intelligence. That from your brain is different from that of your heart and plays a different role.Recent research in the field of neuro-cardiology has improved our understanding of the respective roles of both organs. Specialists have long recognized that one has the power to influence the other. Researchers have now proved that the heart has the power to modulate brain activity and to optimize its function.Scientists describe a state of well-being, called cardiac coherence, obtained by synchronizing both, which yields remarkable benefits in the areas of health, personal energy and relationships. How can you tap into the powerful energy of your own heart? An easy way to access your energy is to trigger a state of cardiac coherence. I have developed a simple technique called "Heart-Smiling" that allows you to better use the energy of your heart and can restore your personal energy at will.Heart-Smiling is a groundbreaking easy to learn technique that allows you to tap into the dynamism of your cardiac organ's superior and positive emotions, like appreciation, gratitude, compassion, generosity, understanding and love. These feelings, when felt and experienced, release hormones into your blood stream that make you feel good and energized. Heart-Smiling is a practical tool that has the power to change your inner state and improve your relationship to yourself and to your world.According to Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, "love is the most astounding cosmic energy". We have access to this amazing force and can use it in our daily lives. It resides in our chest and we can tap into it at will to recharge our batteries and transmit it to those we love.So... Let us replenish ourselves with this vitality and love force and share a Better Heart Energy to those we cherish and love! What are the benefits to using your heart energy on a daily basis?Research in the area of heart energy and cardiac coherence indicate definite benefits in:stress management, physical and emotional health, improved mental capacitiesand smoother interpersonal relationships at home and at work. Smiling practitioners report feeling at once calmer and energized.Smilers feel it easier to stop wasting their precious energy and time on energy sappers. They feel unconstrained and free to spend their energy on what matters to them.Learn to use the Energy of your Heart to transform your life for the better, at home and at work. We hope that this practical book will help you throughout the way a better life and well-being! Sincerely, Nathalie Campeau

Book Freedom

    Book Details:
  • Author : Henri Bergson
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2024-05-02
  • ISBN : 1350029181
  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book Freedom written by Henri Bergson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-05-02 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 15 years, Henri Bergson, the most important French philosopher of the early 20th-century, taught at the Collège de France. Speaking without notes, most of his classes are now lost to history, but records of a handful of courses fortuitously survived thanks to stenographic transcripts. Conveying Bergson's very voice, these extraordinary documents are finally presented here in English. The 1904–1905 lectures are dedicated to the topic of freedom, or as Bergson put it, “the evolution of the problem of freedom.” Building on the philosophy of freedom from his first book, Time and Free Will, he proposes that freedom is not only a fundamental human experience but characteristic of all life as such. By retracing how ancient and modern philosophers have dealt with the delicate question of freedom, Bergson demonstrates the necessity, and also the radically new character, of his own theory of freedom. Bergson's lectures are a feast for many audiences. For philosophers, they give a fuller picture of his thought and contain deep reflections on many core topics in philosophy today, from the nature of time to the difference between brain and mind, the relation between memory and perception, and the vindication of freedom over determinism. For intellectual historians, the lectures are a treasure trove: as a slice of the living thought of a great thinker; as an extended analysis of the natural and human sciences of his day; and as a rich commentary on the history of ancient and modern philosophy. Finally, for cultural historians and literary scholars, the lectures were the cultural capital of Belle Époque France, consumed by elites and a vast educated public. They are also part of an exceedingly rare genre in modern philosophy: spoken, not written, lectures and expressed as a veritable stream of philosophical consciousness that is remarkably structured and analytically lucid.

Book C S Lewis on the Final Frontier

Download or read book C S Lewis on the Final Frontier written by Sanford Schwartz and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-02 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sanford Schwartz offers a penetrating new reading of Lewis's celebrated Space Trilogy. Taken together, Schwartz's readings call into question Lewis's self-styled image as a "dinosaur" out of step with the main currents of modern thought. Far from a simple struggle between an old-fashioned Christian humanism and a newfangled heresy, Lewis's Space Trilogy should be seen as the searching effort of a modern religious apologist to sustain and enrich the former through critical engagement with the latter.

Book excerpt: “The Meaning of the War - Life and Matter in Conflict” is a 1915 work within which Henri Bergson explores Germany's policy of 'might is right' as practised by Bismarck, the Prussian empire, and Germany in its long and bloody history of aggression against its neighbours. Contents include: “Life Of Bergson”, “Introduction”, “Life And Matter At War”, and “The Force Which Wastes And That Which Does Not Waste”. Henri-Louis Bergson (1859–1941) was a French-Jewish philosopher. In 1927, Bergson received The Nobel Prize in Literature. Other notable works by this author include: “The Philosophy of Poetry: The Genius of Lucretius” (1884), “Time and Free Will: An Essay on the Immediate Data of Consciousness” (1889), and “Matter and Memory” (1896). Book Spirituality in John s Gospel

Download or read book Spirituality in John s Gospel written by Gabriel-Mary Fiore and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourth Gospel has been known as the “spiritual gospel” since the second century, but only recently have biblical scholars attempted to express the unique spirituality found in that sacred text. Surprisingly, no consensus has emerged even after a century of research. Thus, while John’s Gospel is widely admired as a vibrant source of Christian piety, the distinct features of its spirituality remain unclear. Fr. Fiore addresses this problem from the fresh perspective of spiritual theology. Capitalizing on a century of Johannine biblical scholarship, he uses the interdisciplinary methods of spiritual theology to bring new data to the study of the Gospel and solutions to many lingering questions: How did ancient readers understand what scholars now refer to as the Gospel’s spirituality? How does that ecclesial reading compare to the analysis of modern critical exegesis? What makes Johannine spirituality special among other forms of Christian piety? How does the question of the Gospel’s authorship impact our understanding of its spirituality? Does the Gospel contain what we now call “mysticism”? In what ways is John’s spirituality still relevant for Christians today? Students of Christian spirituality and Johannine exegesis alike will find here stimulating historical and theological analysis of the Gospel’s spirituality.

Download or read book Dynamic Being written by Aljoscha Berve and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important characteristics of present day ontological research is the growing interest in, and emphasis on, the dynamic aspects of being and the process-relational character of being itself. However, many important questions still await detailed answers. For example, what is the meaning of the concepts of “dynamics,” “dynamicity,” and “dynamic ontology,” among others? Are they identical to, or similar with, respectively, “processes,” “process ontology,” “process-relational ontology”? Is “process ontology” a type of “dynamic ontology”? Dynamic Being: Essays in Process-Relational Ontology examines these and many other questions, and suggests fruitful approaches in dealing with such questions. The book carries out two main tasks: first, investigating developments in the theory of dynamic and process-relational ontologies, and, second, exploring developments in the application of these ontologies. The second task is multidisciplinary in character. The authors of the chapters in this volume are specialists not only in philosophy, but also in other fields of science, including psychology, biology, mathematics, logic, and computer science, their work providing a “seed-bed” of novel possibilities for cooperative interdisciplinary research.

Book The Kingdom of Darkness

Download or read book The Kingdom of Darkness written by Dmitri Levitin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 981 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1500, speculative philosophy lay at the heart of European intellectual life; by 1700, its role was drastically diminished. The Kingdom of Darkness tells the story of this momentous transformation. Dmitri Levitin explores the structural factors behind this change: the emancipation of natural philosophy from metaphysics; theologians' growing preference for philology over philosophy; and a new conception of the limits of the human mind derived from historical and oriental scholarship, not least concerning China and Japan. In turn, he shows that the ideas of two of Europe's most famous thinkers, Pierre Bayle and Isaac Newton, were both the products of this transformation and catalysts for its success. Drawing on hundreds of sources in many languages, Levitin traces in unprecedented detail Bayle and Newton's conceptions of what Thomas Hobbes called The Kingdom of Darkness: a genealogical vision of how philosophy had corrupted the human mind. Both men sought to remedy this corruption, and their ideas helped lay the foundation for the system of knowledge that emerged in the eighteenth century.
