Book Spiritually and Developmentally Mature Leadership

Download or read book Spiritually and Developmentally Mature Leadership written by Daniel E. Harris and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book goes beyond theory to offer tools and suggestions for developing emerging leaders. Inspired by the pioneering work of leadership scholar Andre Delbecq, this book points towards an expanded model of leadership that incorporates an active inner life, and posits that such fully human models of leadership will be essential to meet the profound challenges of the 21st Century. Without presuming to provide definitive answers, the text explores central questions such as: What is the added value of spiritual maturity to leadership? Would the integration of mature spirituality with well-developed intellectual and emotional capacities produce more beneficial leadership outcomes for organizations and individuals? What would a spiritually and developmentally mature emerging leader look like in 10 to 20 years? How do we prepare emerging leaders for the challenges they may face; and how do we model spiritually and developmentally mature leadership in ways that resonate with them? Professor Andre Delbecq (1936-2016) of the University of Santa Clara created the heuristic of “spiritually and developmentally mature leaders” to encapsulate his observation that outstanding leaders often seemed to draw strength and wisdom from sources that are not typically studied or taught in leadership courses. Thirty scholars and practitioners accepted Delbecq’s heuristic as the starting point to explore spiritual components of leadership that do not easily lend themselves to quantification or clear causal links. The analysis of their disciplined engagement with the heuristic forms the foundation of an exploratory, fully human understanding of leadership. This analysis is supported by literature reviews, including an overview of Andre Delbecq’s relevant work. Ultimately, the authors call for further collaboration across disciplines and between research and practice to build on the conceptual constructs offered here, and, especially, to create pedagogies for the training of spiritually and developmentally mature leaders

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western culture is changing. Postmodern exigencies are encroaching on all aspects of our lived experiences. With them, these exigencies bring tremendous pressures and challenges to Spiritual Leadership-challenges that must be met and overcome, lest this traditional institution render itself out-dated and outmoded. We are now confronted with the advent of an empowered, educated, and democratically geared population-an epistemological culture that is engaged in its own determination, that has information at its fingertips, that feels entitled to its own points of view, that passionately pursues its own development, and that wants to feel validated in all these pursuits. Postmodern Western society expects its Spiritual Leaders to be able to engage it at a level of depth that is sufficiently cogent to honor individual complexity, personal trajectory and evolution, philosophical differences, scientific relevance, empirical cogency, cultural sensitivity, religious background, emotional inheritance, and existential mystery. It is a sophisticated and elegant culture, steeped in autonomous entitlement and ready to easily discard that which it feels is no longer useful. In the face of such a stark and startling challenge, what can Spiritual Leaders do to keep up? How do we approach our work when so much is demanded of us? How do we conceive of our vocation in such as way as to avoid the slide into potential cultural 'obsolescence'? This book sets forth a framework of spiritual growth and spiritual leadership that addresses these very issues. In its pages, cherished traditional messages are interwoven with post-modern therapeutic and care-giving outlooks, resulting in a product that is a must read for Spiritual Leaders today. Spiritual Leadership must find a way to remain relevant, cogent, and integrated as it toils to disseminate its essential message of growth and transformation into this post-modern world. This book tells us how.

Book excerpt: Jesus described discipleship with these words: "A pupil is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher." (Luke 6:40)Becoming like Jesus is God's design for all disciples. New believers grow are just starting to down the road to become like Jesus. Mature believers, including leaders in the church, have been progressed some distance down the road of growth. Leaders help less mature believers grow to be like Jesus. As a leader in the church Paul was not shy to say: "Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ." (1 Cor. 11:1)The New Testament identifies the qualifications/traits church leaders are to possess that demonstrate a spiritual maturity which is like Christ. Every true follower of Jesus should be maturing toward possessing the same character qualities required of church leaders. Leaders are followers of Jesus who have progressed further down the path of spiritual maturity. Each and every Christian walks on the same path. Leaders are just further down the road. The goal for everyone is to be like Jesus. Each Christian is a person saved by the grace of God to glorify God by becoming like Jesus. The new birth results in a new life. New life is characterized by spiritual growth. Growing toward spiritual maturity is normal for every Christian. Facilitating and encouraging this growth to the glory of God is the purpose of the church and the function of church leaders. This book challenges all Christians to be growing into leadership. The Bible's teachings about the qualities and qualifications for church leaders are not just for leaders. These qualities describe the spiritual maturity that is the goal for every Christian. Every Christian who is growing to be like Jesus is growing toward leadership.Although it is clear that not everyone will hold a position of leadership in the church it is equally clear that every Christian should be purposefully growing toward becoming like Jesus and becoming qualified to be a leader.
