Download or read book Veil of Dawn s Promise written by Joe Sarkic and published by Joe Sarkic. This book was released on 2023-12-25 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Veil of Dawn’s Promise" unfolds in the futuristic city of Cyronis, a towering beacon of human ingenuity and technological prowess, set against a planet scarred by past mistakes. The city, under the vigilant surveillance of an entity known as the Watchers, encapsulates a perfect blend of advanced technology and strict societal control. Amidst this backdrop, the narrative follows Elysa Jane Hawthorne, a pivotal figure within Cyronis's intricate data nexus, who finds herself entangled in a web of clandestine rebellion and hidden truths. The story opens in the vibrant heart of Cyronis, the marketplace, where the rhythms of daily life are suddenly disrupted by a meticulously orchestrated assault. Shadowy figures, members of a terrorist faction known as The Veil of Dawn, execute a series of attacks, leaving the city in disarray and the populace reeling from the unexpected violence. The aftermath exposes the vulnerabilities of Cyronis’s seemingly impenetrable surveillance system and sets the stage for a deeper conflict. Elysa, grappling with fragmented dreams and a sense of a lost past, finds these disturbances unsettlingly close to her personal sphere. As she delves deeper, she discovers connections to her own life and a much larger conspiracy that extends to the very core of Cyronis's governance and its artificial intelligence, Orion. The story navigates through layers of political intrigue, personal discovery, and societal upheaval. Central to the narrative is the complex relationship between technology and humanity, explored through the lens of Elysa’s experiences and her interactions with Orion. The novel adeptly portrays the struggle for identity and freedom within a system designed for absolute control. Elysa’s journey is one of self-discovery, as she uncovers hidden aspects of her past and the true nature of her existence within Cyronis. "Veil of Dawn" masterfully weaves themes of surveillance, autonomy, and the human spirit against a backdrop of a futuristic dystopia. It presents a world where the lines between human emotion and technological advancements blur, creating a compelling narrative that questions the very essence of human freedom and the price of security.

Book excerpt: “Daring and admirable…it’s rare to find a suspense novel with the scope of well-crafted fiction…The Traveler is compulsive reading.” —Chicago Tribune This suspenseful classic from John Katzenbach, now back in print, reaffirmed his status as one of the best new thriller writers on the scene. Miami detective Mercedes Barren, recovering from a traumatic shooting, has transferred to the relative quiet of the forensics department to get her life back on track. Yet this peace is put on hold when she gets a wrenching phone call: her niece has been brutally murdered. Soon she uncovers the shocking truth: the killer—a professional photographer—is engaging in “copycat” murders across the country, while forcing a young student to document every horrific crime. The woman—he calls her “Boswell”—is his stenographer of cruelty. And if she drops her pen, she’ll end up being his next “subject.” As her already fragile life begins to fall to pieces, Mercedes makes it her mission to track down this cold-blooded killer—even if it means enlisting the help of his brother, a psychiatrist specializing in sex offenders. But can they catch him before his camera flashes next and snuffs out another life? Unbearably suspenseful, with believable characters and dialogue second-to-none, The Traveler is pure John Katzenbach.

Download or read book Criminal Justice Risk and the Revolt against Uncertainty written by John Pratt and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the impact and implications of the relationship between risk and criminal justice in advanced liberal democracies, in the context of the ‘revolt against uncertainty’ which has underpinned the rise of populist politics across these societies in recent years. It asks what impact the demands for more certainty and security, and the insistence that national identity be reasserted, will have on criminal law and penal policy. Drawing upon contributions made at a symposium held at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand in November 2018, this edited collection also discusses the way in which risk has come to inform sentencing practices, broader criminal justice processes and the critical issues associated with this. It also examines the growth and making of new ‘risky populations’ and the harnessing of risk-prevention logics, techniques and mechanisms which have inflated the influence of risk on criminal justice.
