Book excerpt: A “brisk and entertaining” novel of a barren, mysterious planet that may save humanity—or destroy it—by the author of Star Wars: Heir to the Empire (Publishers Weekly). Chasing a new frontier, humankind sends a manned starship into the universe and away from the overpopulated Earth in hopes of finding a new planet to colonize. But every Earthlike world they discover is already inhabited. As it turns out, the universe is a very crowded place. An alien council offers to lease the one remaining uninhabited world: Astra, a bleak and barren but serviceable planet. The new settlement, though, quickly experiences serious problems, from dying crops to the mysterious disappearance of anything and everything that is made of metal. And then Astra reveals a secret neither the aliens nor the human governments could ever have imagined.

Download or read book Wellington Sears Handbook of Industrial Textiles written by Sabit Adanur and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-10-06 with total page 862 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wellington Sears Handbook of Industrial Textiles has been a widely used textile industry reference for more than 50 years. Now a completely updated new edition has been published. It was prepared by a team of industrial textile specialists at Auburn University to provide both technical and management personnel with a comprehensive resource on the current technology and applications of today's industrial textiles. All aspects of industrial textiles are covered: man-made and natural materials, manufacturing and finishing methods, and all applications. There are also sections on properties, testing, waste management, computers and automation, and standards and regulations. The appendices provide extensive reference data: properties, specifications, manufacturers and trade names, mathematical equations and measurement units. The text is organized for easy reference, and well illustrated with hundreds of schematics and photographs.

Download or read book Carbon Fibers Filaments and Composites written by J.L. Figueiredo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional synthetic materials, like metals, ceramics or glass, are usually isotropic substances, and their suitability for structural applications is achieved by morphological design and combination in the macroscopic scale. However, in modem engineering this is often not acceptable. As an alternative, the use of non-homogeneous, anisotropic materials, with significant stiffness and strength only in the directions these mechanical properties are really needed, can lead to enormous material (and weight) savings. This is the case of multiphase systems called composite materials. In these composites, different material parts are added and arranged geometrically, under clearly designed and controlled conditions. Usually, a structure of fibers provides strength and stiffness and a matrix helds them together, whilst providing the geometric form. Carbon fibers are among the high-performance fibers employed in these advanced structural composites, which are profoundly changing many of today's high technology industries. New research and development challenges in this area include upgrading the manufacturing process of fibers and composites, in order to improve characteristics and reduce costs, and modifying the interfacial properties between fibers and matrix, to guarantee better mechanical properties. The interdisciplinary nature of this "new frontier" is obvious, involving chemistry, materials science, chemical and mechanical engineering. Other topics, which more often are treated separately, are also important for the understanding of the processes of fiber production. Carbon filaments is one such topic, as the study of their mechanisms of nucleation and growth is clearly quite relevant to the production of vapour-grown carbon fibers.
