Book Spin Rotation Schemes at the ILC for Two Interaction Regions and Positron Polarization with Both Helicities

Download or read book Spin Rotation Schemes at the ILC for Two Interaction Regions and Positron Polarization with Both Helicities written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This note describes a spin rotation scheme for the ILC that allows the polarization spin vector of the electron and positron beams to be tuned independently for two Interaction Regions (IR). The correct spin direction for a particular IR can be selected by directing the beam into one of two parallel spin rotation beam lines located between the damping ring and the linac. With suitable fast kicker magnets, it is possible to rapidly switch between these parallel beam lines, so that polarized beams can be delivered to two IRs on a pulse train by pulse train basis. A similar scheme can be employed in the insertion beam line to the positron damping ring, to allow rapid helicity switching for polarized positrons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been considerable growth in research activities related to spin phenomena in high energy physics and their theoretical interpretations. It has become clear that the spin enigma is not to be considered separately but that it is strongly related to the quark-gluon structure of hadrons and their interaction dynamics.Research on spin phenomena has now attracted a significant following of experimental and theoretical physicists who meet regularly at symposiums on the topic. This book serves as an introduction to the spin puzzles at high energies. Its main focus is on spin effects in hadronic processes and the spin structure of nucleons. The volume will be very useful for graduate students and for those working in the field of polarization physics or interested in the various aspects of strong interaction dynamics. The only book on spin phenomena in high energy physics, it fulfils the great need for an introductory volume in this area of growing interest.

Book The Role of Polarized Positrons and Electrons in Revealing Fundamental Interactions at the Linear Collider

Download or read book The Role of Polarized Positrons and Electrons in Revealing Fundamental Interactions at the Linear Collider written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposed International Linear Collider (ILC) is well-suited for discovering physics beyond the Standard Model and for precisely unraveling the structure of the underlying physics. The physics return can be maximized by the use of polarized beams. This report shows the paramount role of polarized beams and summarizes the benefits obtained from polarizing the positron beam, as well as the electron beam. The physics case for this option is illustrated explicitly by analyzing reference reactions in different physics scenarios. The results show that positron polarization, combined with the clean experimental environment provided by the linear collider, allows to improve strongly the potential of searches for new particles and the identification of their dynamics, which opens the road to resolve shortcomings of the Standard Model. The report also presents an overview of possible designs for polarizing both beams at the ILC, as well as for measuring their polarization.

Book Transversity 2008 Proceedings Of The Second Workshop On Transverse Polarization Phenomena In Hard Processes

Download or read book Transversity 2008 Proceedings Of The Second Workshop On Transverse Polarization Phenomena In Hard Processes written by Guiseppe Ciullo and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2009-04-29 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transversity 2008, the second workshop on “Transverse polarization phenomena in hard processes” follows the first one held in Como after three years. As in that case, the event comes at the end of a two-years project financed by the Italian Ministry of Education. In the time between the two Workshops, decisive steps towards the revealing of the transverse spin structure of the proton were taken on both the theoretical and experimental sides. The milestone of the first extraction of Transversity and the Sivers function for the u- and d-quarks deserves a special mention. In the same period, historic experiments that in the last decade contributed to the first pioneering measurements in the SIDIS sector, have concluded their data taking, and their place is being taken by upgrades of existing or new facilities. These are the result of the new interesting phenomena which are appearing and call for additional experimental information and novel experimental techniques.Over 80 physicists took part in the Workshop. Equally involved were experimentalists and theoreticians engaged in investigating the nature of transverse spin. The heterogeneous public favoured vivid discussions and fruitful exchange of up-to-date theoretical and experimental ideas on this constantly evolving subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of a series of lectures introducing what the author believes to be the theoretical minimum for the understanding of nuclear spin dynamics, the branch of physics underpinning magnetic resonance techniques such as NMR and MRI. Spin dynamics ultimately concern the study of the state and time evolution of systems made by a large collection of particles possessing spin, one of the most subtle and indeed fascinating concepts in relativistic quantum mechanics and whose understanding requires a mix of quantum mechanics, Hamiltonian dynamics and advanced mathematics. Written in the concise and direct style appropriate for university lectures, this book is addressed to both undergraduate and postgraduate students who are approaching magnetic resonance studies and want to reach the theoretical minimum required to understand the wider topic and its main applications. The book is suitable for researchers who work in the field of magnetic resonance and want to know more about its theoretical fundamentals. Finally, built as a complete set of 12 lectures and 4 workshops, the book can act as a solid reference to lecturers of magnetic resonance university modules. Trained in a world-leading research laboratory internationally recognised for its contributions to the NMR field, the author has a track record in theoretical and methodological developments of nuclear spin dynamics. In this book, he tries to merge his passion for the understanding of physics through its mathematical rendering with his personal quest for the elegance of a clean, clear and satisfactory explanation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fundamental aspect of particle physics is the spin of the particles. With polarized beams, the internal structure of the proton may be probed in ways that are unattainable with unpolarized beams. The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has the unique capability of colliding protons with both transverse and longitudinal polarization at center-of-mass energies up to 500 GeV. In this paper we examine the methods used to accelerate and manipulate polarized proton beams in RHIC and its injectors. Special techniques include the use of a partial Siberian snake and an ac dipole in the AGS. In RHIC we use four superconducting helical Siberian snakes (two per ring) for acceleration, and eight superconducting helical rotators for independent control of polarization directions at two interaction regions.

Book Spin Physics at RHIC a New Twist on the Heavy Ion Experiments

Download or read book Spin Physics at RHIC a New Twist on the Heavy Ion Experiments written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operation of RHIC with two beams of highly polarized protons (70%, either longitudinal or transverse) at high luminosity???? = 2 {circ} 1032 cm−2 sec−1 for two months/year will allow high statistics studies of polarization phenomena in the perturbative region of hard scattering where both QCD and ElectroWeak theory make detailed predictions for polarization effects. The collision c.m energy, (square root)s = 200 - 500 GeV, represents a new domain for the study of spin. Direct photon production win be used to measure the gluon polarization in the polarized proton. A new twist comes from W-boson production which is expected to be 100% parity violating and will thus allow measurements of flavor separated quark and antiquark (u, u, d, d) polarization distributions. Searches for parity violation in strong interaction processes such as jet and leading particle production will be a sensitive way to look for new physics beyond the standard model, one possibility being quark substructure.

Book Impact on Spin Tune From Horizontal Orbital Angle Between Snakes and Orbital Angle Between Spin Rotators

Download or read book Impact on Spin Tune From Horizontal Orbital Angle Between Snakes and Orbital Angle Between Spin Rotators written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To keep the spin tune in the spin depolarizing resonance free region is required for accelerating polarized protons to high energy. In RHIC, two snakes are located at the opposite side of each accelerator. They are configured to yield a spin tune of 1/2. Two pairs of spin rotators are located at either side of two detectors in each ring in RHIC to provide longitudinal polarization for the experiments. Since the spin rotation from vertical to longitudinal is localized between the two rotators, the spin rotators do not change the spin tune. However, due to the imperfection of the orbits around the snakes and rotators, the spin tune can be shifted. This note presents the impact of the horizontal orbital angle between the two snakes on the spin tune, as well as the effect of the vertical orbital angle between two rotators at either side of the collision point on the spin tune.

Book Dilepton Production from Collisions of Polarized Spin 1 2 Hadrons 2 Parton model Predictions

Download or read book Dilepton Production from Collisions of Polarized Spin 1 2 Hadrons 2 Parton model Predictions written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parton-model predictions for lepton-pair production from polarized spin-1/2 particles are considered within the context of a formalism explained in a companion paper. The polarization effects in the quantum-chromodynamic 2 → 2 subprocesses which contribute to lepton-pair production are found to be quite simple. Following the work of Ralston and Soper, polarized distribution functions are defined for gluons as well as quarks. Finally, a detailed discussion of polarization and the hard-scattering formalism is presented for the two cases of intrinsic parton transverse momentum allowed or forbidden.

Book Study of Double Spin Asymmetries in Inclusive Ep Scattering at Jefferson Lab

Download or read book Study of Double Spin Asymmetries in Inclusive Ep Scattering at Jefferson Lab written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spin structure of the proton has been investigated in the high Bjorken x and low momentum transfer Q^2 region. We used Jefferson Lab's polarized electron beam, a polarized target, and a spectrometer to get both the parallel and perpendicular spin asymmetries Apar and Aperp. These asymmetries produced the physics asymmetries A_1 and A_2 and spin structure functions g_1 and g_2. We found Q^2 dependences of the asymmetries at resonance region and higher-twist effects. Our result increases the available data on the proton spin structure, especially at resonance region with low Q^2. Moreover, A_2 and g_2 data show clear Q^2 evolution, comparing with RSS and SANE-BETA. Negative resonance in A_2 data needs to be examined by theory. It can be an indication of very negative transverse-longitudinal interference contribution at W ~ 1.3 GeV. Higher twist effect appears at the low Q^2 of 1.9 GeV^2, although it is less significant than lower Q^2 data of RSS. Twist03 matrix element d_2 was calculated using our asymmetry fits evaluation at Q^2 - 1.9 GeV^2. D-bar_2 = -0.0087"0.0014 was obtained by integrating 0.47 d"x d"0.87.

Book Helical Spin Rotators and Snakes for RHIC

Download or read book Helical Spin Rotators and Snakes for RHIC written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The RHIC collider, now under construction at BNL, will have the possibility of polarized proton-proton collisions up to a beam energy of 250 Gev. Polarized proton beams of such high energy can be only obtained with the use of siberian snakes, a special kind of spin rotator that rotates the particle spin by 180° around an axis lying in the horizontal plane. Siberian snakes help to preserve the beam polarization while numerous spin depolarizing resonances are crossed, during acceleration. In order to collide longitudinally polarized beams, it is also planned to install spin rotators around two interaction regions. This paper discusses snake and spin rotator designs based on sequences of four helical magnets. The schemes that were chosen to be applied at RHIC are presented.
