Book Gandhi s Spinning Wheel and the Making of India

Download or read book Gandhi s Spinning Wheel and the Making of India written by Rebecca Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11-03 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gandhi’s use of the spinning wheel was one of the most significant unifying elements of the nationalist movement in India. Spinning was seen as an economic and political activity that could bring together the diverse population of South Asia, and allow the formerly elite nationalist movement to connect to the broader Indian population. This book looks at the politics of spinning both as a visual symbol and as a symbolic practice. It traces the genealogy of spinning from its early colonial manifestations in Company painting to its appropriation by the anti-colonial movement. This complex of visual imagery and performative ritual had the potential to overcome labour, gender, and religious divisions and thereby produce an accessible and effective symbol for the Gandhian anti-colonial movement. By thoroughly examining all aspects of this symbol’s deployment, this book unpacks the politics of the spinning wheel and provides a model for the analysis of political symbols elsewhere. It also probes the successes of India’s particular anti-colonial movement, making an invaluable contribution to studies in social and cultural history, as well as South Asian Studies.

Book Wisden on India

Download or read book Wisden on India written by Jonathan Rice and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-07-18 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout its long and distinguished history, Wisden has reported on Indian cricket around the world and commented on its highs and lows. One of the first references to a touring Indian cricket side was in 1889: 'Perhaps the most notable feature of the tour was the wonderfully successful bowing of Mr Pavri, who took 170 wickets at a cost of under 12 runs each'. For a time, India enjoyed a golden age of cricket, largely through Lord Hawke's tours in the 1890s and then buoyed up by the exploits of Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji who was chosen as a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1897. But there were set-backs to come, such as the team's 1953 'Worst Start in Test Cricket' which saw Trueman scythe through their top order at Headingley to leave the team in disrepair at 0 for 4 wickets after 14 balls. Recent decades have seen formidable players such as Ganguly, Laxman, Sehway, Dravid and Tendulkar lift India's game to great heights, making them a force to be reckoned with. This anthology charts the progress of India through Wisden's pages, using match reports, articles, notes, obituaries and illustrations to bring this extraordinary team - and their equally extraordinary nation - to vivid and delightful life.

Book excerpt: This volume fills a gap in the international business literature, offering the perspectives of researchers who are deeply embedded in one key emerging market, India. Book Reading India in a Transnational Era

Download or read book Reading India in a Transnational Era written by Rumina Sethi and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-08-12 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology demonstrates the significance of Raja Rao’s writing in the broader spectrum of anti-colonial, postcolonial, and diasporic writing in the 20th century. In addition to highlighting Rao’s significant presence in Indian writing, the volume presents a range of previously unpublished material which contextualises Rao’s work within 20th-century modernist, postmodernist, and postcolonial trends. Exploring both his fictional and non-fictional works, Reading India in a Transnational Era engages with issues of subaltern agency and national belonging, authenticity, subjectivity, internationalism, multicultural politics, postcolonialism, and literary and cultural representation through language and translation. A literary volume that discusses gender and identity on both socio-political grounds, apart from dealing with Rao’s linguistic experimentations in a transnational era, will be of interest among scholars and researchers of English, postcolonial and world literature, cultural theory, and Asian studies.
