Book Spin Dependence of Associated Production of a Prompt Photon and a Charm Quark at Next to leading Order in QCD

Download or read book Spin Dependence of Associated Production of a Prompt Photon and a Charm Quark at Next to leading Order in QCD written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A second order, O([alpha]2{sub s}), calculation in perturbative quantum chromodynamics is presented of the longitudinal spin dependence of the cross section for the two particle inclusive reaction p + p → [gamma] + c + [Chi] for large values of the transverse momentum of the prompt photon and charm quark. Differential distributions are provided for the spin-averaged cross section and for the two-spin longitudinal polarization asymmetry A{sub LL} at the energy of the Brookhaven Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. An assessment is given of the prospects for determination of the spin dependence of the charm quark density.

Book Associated Production of W Charm in 13 TeV Proton proton Collisions Measured with CMS and Determination of the Strange Quark Content of the Proton

This book was released on 2020 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The associated production of a W boson and a single charm quark (W+c) is the only process in proton-proton collisions that directly probes the strange quark content of the proton. In this thesis, W+charm production is measured in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at 13 TeV, as recorded by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment. The analysis focuses on the identification of W bosons in their leptonic decay to a muon and a neutrino and charm quarks are tagged via the full reconstruction of D*-Mesons. The measured cross sections of W+c production are used, in combination with other relevant CMS results and the most precise HERA DIS data, in a QCD analysis to determine the strange quark content of the proton. The resulting strange quark distribution and suppression, with respect to the other light sea quarks, are in good agreement with those obtained in neutrino scattering experiments and extend their kinematic reach.

Book Jet Physics and QCD Tests at the Tevatron Collider

Download or read book Jet Physics and QCD Tests at the Tevatron Collider written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results are presented detailing the status of tests of perturbative QCD in hard parton-parton collisions generated by high energy collisions of protons and antiprotons at the Fermilab Collider. Recent data fro the CDF and DO experiments are compared to Next-to-Leading Order QCD calculations in hadronic jet production, prompt photon production, jet production in events with W bosons, and b-quark production.

Book Next to leading order QCD and Electroweak Corrections to WWW Production at Proton proton Colliders

Download or read book Next to leading order QCD and Electroweak Corrections to WWW Production at Proton proton Colliders written by Gernot Knippen and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Multiboson-production processes like triple-W-boson production are sensitive to triple and quartic gauge couplings and Higgs boson exchanges. They provide a window to investigate electroweak symmetry breaking and are important processes to test the validity of the Standard Model. In the given work, next-to-leading-order (NLO) electroweak (EW) and NLO QCD corrections to WWW production in proton-proton collisions have been worked out for integrated and differential cross sections. This has been done in three different and independent ways: a calculation with on-shell, i.e. stable W bosons, a full off-shell calculation with leptonically decaying W bosons, and a calculation in the triple-pole approximation (TPA), which only takes into account the leading pole term in a threefold resonance expansion. Owing to significant quark-photon-induced EW corrections and due to large photon-PDF uncertainties in the past, the impact of different PDF sets including QED corrections is investigated for on-shell WWW production. For each calculation, the NLO corrections are dominated by QCD corrections and a strong cancellation among the quark-antiquark- and quark-photon-induced EW corrections is observed. The dominant theoretical uncertainty arises from the residual scale dependence. The TPA performs well for integrated cross sections and angular and rapidity distributions. Phase-space regions that are sensitive to off-shell effects and for which the TPA, therefore, is insufficient can be identified based on the results of the TPA calculation alone

Book Challenges to Quantum Chromodynamics

Download or read book Challenges to Quantum Chromodynamics written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general structure of QCD meshes remarkably well with the facts of the hadronic world, especially quark-based spectroscopy, current algebra, the approximate point-like structure of large momentum transfer inclusive reactions, and the logarithmic violation of scale invariance in deep inelastic lepton-hadron reactions. QCD has been successful in predicting the features of electron-positron and photon-photon annihilation into hadrons, including the magnitude and scaling of the cross sections, the shape of the photon structure function, the production of hadronic jets with patterns conforming to elementary quark and gluon subprocesses. The experimental measurements appear to be consistent with basic postulates of QCD, that the charge and weak currents within hadrons are carried by fractionally-charged quarks, and that the strength of the interactions between the quarks, and gluons becomes weak at short distances, consistent with asymptotic freedom. Nevertheless in some cases, the predictions of QCD appear to be in dramatic conflict with experiment. The anomalies suggest that the proton itself as a much more complex object than suggested by simple non-relativistic quark models. Recent analyses of the proton distribution amplitude using QCD sum rules points to highly-nontrival proton structure. Solutions to QCD in one-space and one-time dimension suggest that the momentum distributions of non-valence quarks in the hadrons have a non-trival oscillatory structure. The data seems also to be suggesting that the intrinsic'' bound state structure of the proton has a non- negligible strange and charm quark content, in addition to the extrinsic'' sources of heavy quarks created in the collision itself. 144 refs., 46 figs., 2 tabs.
