Book Buffy Conquers the Academy

Download or read book Buffy Conquers the Academy written by U. Melissa Anyiwo and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buffy Conquers the Academy represents the cusp of pioneering research into a television show that has inspired a wealth of academic study since its cancellation in 2003. As a reflection of the current obsession with all things vampiric, this text offers an alternative perspective on the vampire myth from the point of view of scholars in the field and thereby celebrates the continuing existence of Buffy Studies as an endlessly fruitful academic discipline that is truly global and interdisciplinary. The Associations of Popular Culture and American Culture (PCA/ACA) have a tradition of encouraging growth in intellectual inquiry, and the acceptance of Buffy Studies as a subgenre of the Vampire area in 2008 reflected the belief in this globally recognized, sustainable discipline. In this volume, Buffyologists delve into the intricate world of Sunnydale from multiple perspectives that cut across all academic disciplines, ranging from gender/sexuality to religion, making this collection an excellent reflection of the current body of work under the umbrella of Buffy Studies.

Book The American Villain

Download or read book The American Villain written by Richard A. Hall and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-12-02 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Villain: Encyclopedia of Bad Guys in Comics, Film, and Television seeks to provide one go-to reference for the study of the most popular and iconic villains in American popular culture. Since the 1980s, pop culture has focused on what makes a villain a villain. The Joker, Darth Vader, and Hannibal Lecter have all been placed under the microscope to get to the origins of their villainy. Additionally, such bad guys as Angelus from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Barnabas Collins from Dark Shadows have emphasized the desire for redemption—in even the darkest of villains. Various incarnations of Lucifer/Satan have even gone so far as to explore the very foundations of what we consider "evil." The American Villain: Encyclopedia of Bad Guys in Comics, Film, and Television seeks to collect all of those stories into one comprehensive volume. The volume opens with essays about villains in popular culture, followed by 100 A–Z entries on the most notorious bad guys in film, comics, and more. Sidebars highlight ancillary points of interest, such as authors, creators, and tropes that illuminate the motives of various villains. A glossary of key terms and a bibliography provide students with resources to continue their study of what makes the "baddest" among us so bad.

As head of the Wellcome Trust, Jeremy Farrar was one of the first people in the world to hear about a mysterious new disease in China - and to learn it could readily spread between people. A member of the SAGE emergency committee, Farrar was a key figure in both the UK and the World Health Organization at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic amid great uncertainty, fast-moving situations and missed opportunities. Spike is his widely acclaimed inside story. His account casts light on the UK government's claims to be 'following the science' and is informed not just by Farrar's views but by interviews with other top scientists and political figures.

Book Fantastic Spiritualities

Download or read book Fantastic Spiritualities written by J'annine Jobling and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work Jobling argues that religious sensibility in the Western world is in a process of transformation, but that we see here change, not decline, and that the production and consumption of the fantastic in popular culture offers an illuminating window onto spiritual trends and conditions. She examines four major examples of the fantastic genre: the Harry Potter series (Rowling), His Dark Materials (Pullman), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Whedon) and the Earthsea cycle (Le Guin), demonstrating that the spiritual universes of these four iconic examples of the fantastic are actually marked by profoundly modernistic assumptions, raising the question of just how contemporary spiritualities (often deemed postmodern) navigate philosophically the waters of truth, morality, authority, selfhood and the divine. Jobling tackles what she sees as a misplaced disregard for the significance of the fantasy genre as a worthy object for academic investigation by offering a full-length, thematic, comparative and cross-disciplinary study of the four case-studies proposed, chosen because of their significance to the field and because these books have all been posited as exemplars of a 'postmodern' religious sensibility. This work shows how attentiveness to spiritual themes in cultural icons can offer the student of theology and religions insight into the framing of the moral and religious imagination in the late twentieth and twenty-first centuries and how this can prompt traditional religions to reflect on whether their own narratives are culturally framed in a way resonating with the 'signs of the times'.

Book Buffy Meets the Academy

Download or read book Buffy Meets the Academy written by Kevin K. Durand and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents serious academic scholarship on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It differs from other works because it uses Buffy as a primary text and not as a secondary instrument to explore other concepts. In doing so, it demonstrates that popular culture studies should be approached with the same serious attention that is paid to classic philosophy and other long-established fields. Essays assemble the Buffy canon and explore how Buffy treats Shakespeare, comics, power, sisterhood, apocalyptic revisionism, folklore, feminism, redemption, patriarchy, identity and education. Book excerpt: Sinner is the fourth book in Sara Douglass's The Wayfarer Redemption series, however it starts a brand new story arc and is the perfect place for new readers to enter this epic fantasy series. The land Tencendor has been united for more than forty years. The Starman Axis defeated the dreaded monster Gorgrael and by fulfilling his destiny he has brought peace finally to the three races of this land: the Icarii bird people, the Avar tree people, and the humans who for generations controlled (and oppressed) the other two races. Attaining god-like powers, Axis chose to retire to the ethereal sphere in the heavens with his beautiful consort Azhure and ceded his authority to his son Caelum SunSoar. As Supreme Ruler of Tencendor, Caelum holds the reins of power carefully and the thousands of years of ill-will between the three races seems to be at an end. All seems golden for this land. Or so it might seem. But the path of the son is not necessarily that of the father. Caelum is untried and has known nothing but peace during his lifetime. And while the three races appear at peace, there are undercurrents of jealousy and bitter memories just buried beneath the surface. So when strange powers threaten to come through the Star Gate (a source of power that gives those with magic their near immortality) bent on the destruction of all he holds dear, Caelum will have to find the strength to fight this threat. Complicating this situation is the almost impossible death of his Icarri sister...and the culprit appears to be none other then his hated brother Drago, who as a baby had been in league with Gorgrael and had sufficient power to try to kill Caelum. As punishment Drago was made mortal (unlike his near invulnerable siblings). As Caelum struggles to hold all he holds dear safe, he is left with this quandary: Is Drago as powerless as he seems? Is his hate for his fate enough to have him murder? And is he in league with the demons that hover ever nearer? Book Music Sound and Silence in Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Download or read book Music Sound and Silence in Buffy the Vampire Slayer written by Janet K. Halfyard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intense and continuing popularity of the long-running television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003) has long been matched by the range and depth of the academic critical response. This volume, the first devoted to the show's imaginative and widely varied use of music, sound, and silence, helps to develop an increasingly important and inadequately covered area of research - the many roles of music in contemporary television. In addressing this significant gap, this book provides an exemplary overview of the functions of music and sound in the interpretation of a television show. This is done through analyses that focus on scoring and source music, the title theme, the music production process, the critically acclaimed musical episode (voted number 13 in Channel Four's One Hundred Greatest Musicals), the symbolic and dramatic use of silence, and the popular reception of the show by its international fan base. In keeping with contemporary trends in the study of popular musics, a variety of critical approaches are taken from musicology, cultural studies, and media and communication studies, specifically employing critique, musical analysis, industry studies, and hermeneutics.
