In 1930, the leaders of the two Groups, Hans Reichenbach and Rudolf Carnap, launched the journal Erkenntnis. However, between the Berlin Group and the Vienna Circle, there was not only close relatedness but also significant difference. Above all, while the Berlin Group explored philosophical problems of the actual practice of science, the Vienna Circle, closely following Wittgenstein, was more interested in problems of the language of science. The book includes first discussion ever (in three chapters) on Walter Dubislav’s logic and philosophy. Two chapters are devoted to another author scarcely explored in English, Kurt Grelling, and another one to Paul Oppenheim who became an important figure in the philosophy of science in the USA in the 1940s–1960s. Finally, the book discusses the precursor of the Nord-German tradition of scientific philosophy, Jacob Friedrich Fries.

Written in 1938, philosophical systems which employ logical methods almost exclusively would undoubtedly be expected to produce non-empirical results. If, however, logic is taken simply as a method of connecting meanings it is not difficult to reconcile logical methods with empirical results. If logical formular, in other words, assert nothing about the meanings of propositions, but simply show how such meanings are connected, then an empiricism based on a logical analysis of meanings is not inconsistent. This is what the Logical Positivists have attempted to do. This book looks at two areas: the foundations of a scientific method free from metaphysics, and the elimination of pseudo-concepts introduced by metaphysics into science and philosophy.

Through Roth's extensive experience as a teacher, he has learned that a teacher must live in the heat of the moment, but also develop room to maneuver in the moment. These skills come only by actually being in the classroom, working at the elbow of experienced teachers and discussing the events of the day with other teachers. Roth develops his theory by introducing the previously ignored element of temporality in teaching. When there is no time out for reflection, a teacher must develop on-the-spot decision-making skills. In part one, he presents the ideas of being-in the classroom with students and being-with other teachers. Other concepts that emerge are habitus (perceptions and expectations that lead to action), Spielraum (room to maneuver in situations), and relationality (knowing how to act without reflection, based on student-teacher rapport). In part two, Roth asserts that when novice teachers coteach and engage in subsequent cogenerative dialoguing with seasoned professionals, they are in the process of becoming in the classroom. Teachers, college students majoring in education, and professors will all benefit immensely from this book.
